9 1.Slide approximately 75 mm (3") of your ma terial under middle of. 2.Be sure wood is lying flat against base of planer. If is inserted at an angle, reading may be inaccurate. 3.Crank down on ma terial until removal bar engages wood. You will see red arrow begin move up scale indicating amount of be removed with at that height. 4.Adjust height until desired depth of cut appears on gauge. 5.Pull out from under. 6.Turn unit on and feed your in cutter head. Note: Do not exceed recommended depth of cut for various widths of recommended on removal gauge. WARNING: DO NOT SWITCH UNIT ON WITH MATERIAL POSITIONED UNDER CARRIAGE. SERIOUS INJURY COULD RESULT. Speed Selection (Fig. 8) ONLY SWITCH SPEEDS WHEN PLANER IS RUNNING. FIG.8 Your planer has ability feed at two different P speeds. The twospeed feature (P) was designed improve efficiency when planing and provide best possible surface finish a variety of s. To remove thickness more quickly, set unit at speed 2. This setting delivers 96 cuts per inch. For finishing, set unit speed 1. Speed 1 is ideal for ensuring finest finish on last pass before your final thickness is achieved. Note: When planing particularly hard or figured species of wood, speed 1 is recommended. The slower feed rate will reduce knife wear and tear-out by delivering 179 cuts per inch. Fan-Assisted Chip Ejection System Your planer is equipped with a fan-assisted chip system aid in exhausting chips from unit. The fan-assisted chip system will work in conjunction with independent dust collection systems. It is not recommended that a shop vac be connected DW735. The capacity of most vacs does not support volume of chips ejected during planing. The vacuum hose may clog spping flow of chips. See Troubleshooting Guide, for additional information. Aumatic Carriage Lock There is no manual lock on your planer. A device that aumatically minimizes movement that causes snipe during planing is designed in four threaded posts. Turret Sp (Fig. 9) Your planer is equipped with a turret sp (Q) for repetitive planing at pre-set depths. Plane workpiece at desired increments until correct final thickness is achieved. 7

10 PLANING BASICS Proper Planing Technique TO PLANE YOUR MATERIAL 1. Lower desired height for your first pass. 2. Turn unit on and feed in feed rollers. 3. Examine finished cut and adjust appropriate height for your next pass. Flip board back and forth between each pass as recommended in Proper Planing Techniques. See Troubleshooting Guide, for additional information. WARNING: DO NOT TURN UNIT ON WITH MATERIAL ALREADY INSERTED UNDER CARRIAGE. WAIT UNTIL ROLLERS AND cutter head ARE UP TO FULL SPEED BEFORE FEEDING YOUR MATERIAL INTO MACHINE. For best results, plane both sides of workpiece reach a desired thickness. For example, if you need remove 3 mm (1/8") from your workpiece, remove 1.6 mm (1/16") from each side. This not only allows workpiece dry with a even moisture content, it also produces finer cuts. WARNING: Plane only wood that is free from foreign objects, with no loose knots and as few tight knots as possible. Do not plane wood that is severely warped, twisted, knotted or bowed. WARNING: Do not place your body between rear of planer and a stationary object while is feeding. Serious injury could result. MINIMUM/MAXIMUM WIDTH/HEIGHT/DEPTH Always plane in direction of grain. Support workpiece adequately at all times. Planing less than 19 mm (3/4") wide is not recommended. If you must plane narrow, group several pieces ger and plane m as one wide workpiece whenever possible. The maximum depth of cut your planer can take in one pass is 3 mm (1/8") [on less than 152 mm (6") wide]. Never attempt modify your planer take a deeper cut. Follow recommended depth/width of cut guidelines shown in Table A for best results. Snipe Snipe is a depression made when an unsupported TABLE A end of your drops ward floor, causing opposite end lift up in cutter head. TO AVOID SNIPE Feed workpiece in planer so it is level and remains flat against base at all times. Keep workpiece level throughout planing operation by receiving or catching it from rear of planer. If you are planing that is especially long, use of additional support is recommended. Twisted, Cupped and Bowed Wood (Fig. 10) If both sides of your are very rough or if FIG.10 is cupped, bowed or twisted, your planer may not produce desired result. Ideally, you should have at least one level face/surface on your before you plane. Your thickness planer will work best with that has been run through a jointer produce one flat surface. If you do not have at least one flat surface or a jointer, see following recommendations. To Plane twisted wood (fig. 11) WARNING: TWISTED WOOD MAY JAM YOUR FIG.11 HICKNESS PLANER. IF A JAM OCCURS, TURN POWER OFF, DISCONNECT POWER SUPPLY AND RAISE CARRIAGE TO RELEASE MATERIAL FROM cutter head. If your is only slightly twisted: Plane both sides alternating from one or until desired thickness is reached. 8

11 To Plane cupped Wood (fig. 12) To obtain best possible results with cupped wood: Rip down middle and plane FIG.12 TOP FLAT it as two separate pieces. Ripping reduces severity of cup and allows machine deliver better results. Understand that you will BOTTOM FLAT have remove more on cupped wood achieve desired thickness than you would on a normal board. If ripping is not an option: Plane one side of until flat, n plane opposite side until it is also flat. Do not flip board back and forth between each pass as recommended by general planing directions. To Plane Bowed Wood (fig. 13) The feed rollers and cutter head in your planer will push bow out of as it feeds. However, when exits planer, pressure of rollers and cutter head will release allowing wood spring back in a bowed formation. To properly remove bow, use a jointer. FIG.13 BOWED WOOD WILL BE FLATTENED BY FEED ROLLERS AND CUTTER HEAD BUT BOW WILL RETURN AFTER WOOD IS PLANED Changing Planer Knives (Fig ) WARNING: DISCONNECT PLANER FROM POWER SOURCE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE OR ACCESS KNIVES.
