GOSPEL MEDITATION 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time "So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him." What did Zebedee think about all of this?

We can't help but wonder whether Zebedee was in favor of this promise that his heirs would become "ishers of men." Most likely, this event was the cause of some familial tension.

But the Lord also makes it clear that our devotion to him is meant to trump our devotion to anythingor anyoneelse.

Parents for example, like Zebedee, are called to encourage their children to follow the Lord's call.

3 GOSPEL MEDITATION 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time "So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him." What did Zebedee think about all of this? His sons and his partners, James and John, suddenly left their post and followed Jesus. So there he stood in the boat with a crew of employees, but not one of his sons. We can't help but wonder whether Zebedee was in favor of this promise that his heirs would become "ishers of men." Most likely, this event was the cause of some familial tension. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus instructs us to love and serve others for the love of God. But the Lord also makes it clear that our devotion to him is meant to trump our devotion to anythingor anyoneelse. For our part, we are called to allow this divine allegiance to exist in those we love, even when it means a sacriice for us as well. Parents for example, like Zebedee, are called to encourage their children to follow the Lord's call. A son or daughter's vocation to religious life certainly exempliies this kind of sacriice for a parent who might have had a different plan in mind. But in truth every son and daughter has a vocation from God and parents have the opportunity to support and assist their children as they seek to hear and follow God's special plan for their lives. We don't know for sure how Zebedee responded to the vocation of his sons, but we know that James and John were counted among the Twelve Apostles and that their devotion and dedication helped to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Regardless of what he might have thought as he stood in that boat, we can be quite sure that looking back now, Zebedee can rejoice heartily in the choice of his sons to leave their nets and follow Christ. Glaucoma While there are no known ways of preventing glaucoma, blindness or signiicant vision loss from glaucoma can be prevented if the disease is recognized in the early stages. Glaucoma medications slow the progression of glaucoma by reducing elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) to prevent damage to the optic nerve. Surgical treatments are also available. Anyone with high risk factors should be tested every year or two after age 35. Those at higher risk include people of African descent, people with diabetes, and people with a family history of glaucoma. We invite you to join us! There are 26 Billings area congregations, together with St. Patrick, that support up to 4 families with children who are without permanent shelter, and have been accepted into the Family Promise Program. Before losing their housing, these families lived in our community, their children attended our schools, and they were employed in our businesses. THEY ARE YOUR NEIGHBORS. The Program provides meals, shelter, counseling, training, classes, budgeting, nutrition, and guidance as these parents work to regain selfsuficiency. While becoming fully employed and actively saving for their future, your volunteering gives them a chance to reclaim independence and new hope for a better life. Here s how it works: Once every 13 weeks (4 times /year), St. Patrick s, together with Good Shepherd Lutheran and Congregation Beth Aaron, provide that week s evening meals, visit with the families/children in the evening, or be an overnight presence for the families support. Good Shepherd Lutheran is always the host church site for the families during our week. For a couple hours that week, St. Patrick volunteers work to provide the evening meal, the visiting or the overnight hosting on Sunday, Friday or Saturday of our week only. WE NEED YOUR HELP! This is an approximately 20 minute commitment one Sunday each month (when you are here, anyway!). Volunteers will receive training and the reward of relationships with our youngest parish members!
