All responses must be based on the text. 저는 얼마 전에 다른 사람들을 위해서 평생 헌신하고 봉사하며 살아온 장기려 박사의 삶 을 다룬 책을 읽었습니다. 이 책을 통해 알게 된 장기려 박사의 삶을 여러분에게 소개하 여 제가 받은 감동을 함께 나누고 싶습니다. 장기려 박사는 우리나라 최초로 간 절제술을 시도해 간암 초기의 환자를 완전히 낫게 한 최고의 외과 의사였습니다. 하지만 뛰어난 의술보다 더 훌륭한 점은 그가 치료비를 문제 삼지 않고 가난한 환자들을 돌보았다는 사실입니다. 장기려 박사는 다음과 같은 말을 남 겼습니다. 의학도가 되려고 지원했을 때, 나는 치료비가 없어서 진찰을 받지 못하고 고통받는 환자 들을 위해 의사 일을 하기로 결심했다. 그래서 의사가 된 날 부터 지금까지 그들에 대한 책임감을 잊어버린 날이 없다. 이 결심을 잊지 않고 살면 나의 생애는 성공이요, 그렇지 못하면 실패라고 생각한다. 장기려 박사의 이런 생각은 병원비가 없어서 퇴원하지 못하는 환자를 위해 몰래 병원 뒷 문을 열어 주었다는 일화에서도 잘 드러납니다. 이런 일을 두고 사람들은 그에게 바보 의사 라는 별명을 붙여주었습니다. 하지만 저는 자신보다 주위를 돌보며 따뜻한 세상 을 만들어 가기 위해 노력한 장기려 박사에게 국보 의사 라는 별명을 붙여 주고 싶습 니다. 저는 장기려 박사의 삶의 자세를 본받아 나중에 커서 어떤 일을 하더라도 다른사람들을 위해 봉사하는 삶을 살아야겠다고 결심했습니다. 8

All responses must be based on the text. 자기결정력도 연습이 필요해 월간 샘터 하버드대의 한 교수는 1,100명의 부모와 700명의 학생을 대상으로 자기결정력과 행복한 성장과의 상관관계를 살펴보기 위한 조사를 진행했다. 그 결과 자신의 선택이나 행동을 스스로 결정하는 아이일수록 행복한 삶을 살고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그 까닭은 무엇일 까? 어려서부터 자기 책임 하에 어려운 결정을 많이 해본 아이들일수록 결정에 대한 책 임감을 학습했기 때문에, 행동의 선택과 결정에 그만큼 더 신중했기 때문이라고 해석해 볼 수 있다. 자기가 결정하고 선택한 일에 대해서 책임을 지는 연습이 그래서 중요한 것 이다. 유치원에 다니는 아이가 있는 한국의 한 가정의 아침 풍경을 떠올려보자. 아침에 못 일 어나는 아이를 억지로 깨우고 아침밥 안 먹는다고 떼쓰지 않을까 노심초사하면서 수저 와 밥그릇을 들고 따라다닌다. 아이가 입고 갈 옷을 골라주고 양말을 신긴다. 유치원에서 돌아오면 간식 챙겨먹이고, 어르고 달래 학원에 보낸다. 학원에서 돌아오면 오늘 과제가 무엇인지 파악해 숙제를 시킨다. 잠자리에 들 때도 양치는 했는지 잠옷으로 갈아입었는 지 일일이 챙긴다. 엄마들에게 아이의 생활을 모두 챙겨주는 이유를 물으면 아이가 하지 못하니까, 아이 한테 시간이 없으니까 라고 대답한다. 하지만 시간에 쫓겨 엄마가 모든 것을 해주는 습 관이 들면 아이는 무엇 하나 제대로 하는 것이 없게 되고, 자기결정력도 점점 줄어들 수 밖에 없다. 그런 것은 어느 한 순간 얻어지는 것이 아니라 생활 속에서 천천히 쌓여가는 것이기 때문이다. 아이에게 자기 결정력을 심어주려면 무엇보다도 부모의 태도가 바뀌 어야 한다. 할 수 있는 일과 해야 할 일을 아이 스스로 결정하게 만드는 것이 필요하다. 일상의 아주 사소한 일도 마찬가지다. 아이스크림을 사러 간 경우를 생각해보자. 다양한 아이스크림 종류 중 아이에게 선택을 맡기는 부모는 현명하다. 자기가 선택한 아이스크 림을 먹는 아이는 맛이 없더라도 불평하지 못하고, 다음번엔 잘 고르겠다는 생각을 하게 될 것이다. 반면에, 부모가 골라 준 아이스크림을 먹는 아이는 맛이 없을 경우 부모 탓을 하며, 화를 내고 짜증을 낼 가능성이 크다. 장차 누가 아이스크림 고를 때 더 신중해지겠는가? 자기가 결정하고 선택한 일에 대해서 는 책임을 져야 한다는 교훈을 누가 더 얻겠는가? 12
