19 169 Abstra c t The possibi l i t ies and l imi ts of consent theor ies as a j ust i ficat ion for pol i t ical obl igat ion Par k, Hyo-Chong * 3) This research is an at tempt to examine the possibi l i t ies and l imi ts of consent as a potent ground of political obligation in a critical way. The consent theories have a moral superiority compar ison wi th social contract theor ies and ut i l i tar ianism. Their maj or strength is to demonstrate t a ci t izen has a duty to bind to onesel f to obey to pol i t ical author ity, as we bind our selves to obey promising. Nevertheless, this research calls into question the validity of consent theories by arg that consent is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition for a just ificat ion polit ical obligat ion we do not regard consent merely as a potential ground of authority, it is important to note the fac that consent has other functions as well. The educative and communicative functions of consent are important values that have implications for citizenship education in democratic society.
