3 INTRODUCTION TO A CALL TO PRAYER AND SELF-DENIAL 2017 A SPECIAL PROGRAM A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial is an annual observance during which members and friends reflect on the gospel of Christ, pray together, and make an offering to mission with women, children and youth in response to God s love and grace. A PROGRAM WITH A GOAL: MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH Each year, nearly a quarter of a million women die worldwide from preventable causes relating to pregnancy and childbirth. Approximately 19,000 children die every day from treatable diseases such as diarrhea and tuberculosis. The women and children s health Millennium Development Goals (MDGs 4 and 5) saw the least progress in the last 15 years. United Methodist Women, as a faith-based women s organization, recognizes this issue as a critical area of concern and priority. Historically, also, healthcare for women and children has been at the heart of United Methodist Women since the organization was founded in the 1800s. Our foremothers chose to act to save women s lives. They chose to build hospitals and clinics, to train women and girls to serve as doctors and nurses, and to send missionaries to initiate the work. Today, United Methodist Women continues to support the health and family needs of women and children around the globe. Despite these efforts, maternal and child mortality remains a significant global challenge. In 2017, the offering received from the Call to Prayer and Self-Denial observance will support programming and advocacy for the health of mothers and their children. Programs may include but are not limited to: Prenatal and post-partum care. Reproductive health family planning, cancer screening and healthy childbirth. Access to healthcare. Educational opportunities in medical fields. Child protection. Crisis ministries for women who are victims of violence at home or during periods of war and conflict. Advocacy for equity in law and services for women and children. Informal educational workshops on healthy living for teens at risk, lactating mothers who are HIV-positive, mothers who need new ideas on nutrition and basic health, hygiene and disease prevention. Trauma and mental health counseling. Advocacy and education around the impact of the environment on maternal and child health. One hundred percent of the offering will go directly to maternal and child health programs and advocacy.

4 TO PLAN THE PROGRAM A program for A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial can be found in the United Methodist Women Program Book : A Call to Community. Use the program and the packet to create a Call to Prayer and Self-Denial observance. The packet includes: A poster to announce the program in your church and community. A prayer card featuring prayers in English, Spanish and Korean that may be used during the program. This prayer may be woven into the program or prayed at home. An offering envelope for individual and group offerings. An order form detailing special shipping and handling costs of resources. TO PROMOTE THE PROGRAM Display the poster for the program in the narthex or fellowship hall. Announce via the bulletin, newsletter, website, Facebook and Twitter. Share a mission moment about A Call to Prayer during a service or coffee hour. Give out prayer cards in the church and community. Highlight people and organizations lifted in the sidebars in displays or bulletin. Invite a National Mission Institution partner to raise awareness and lobby for laws and regulations that will benefit mothers and their families. 5 Giving impact on people Old Mutare Hospital is one of the Zimbabwe United Methodist Church s health institutions located outside Mutare in Manicaland Province. It provides medical services for 30,000 people from surrounding areas. The hospital received a $22,000 grant for solarification of its maternity wards. This grant enabled the hospital to install solar energy that is used as backup during power cuts in the night. These mothers are very grateful for the Call to Prayer grant, though we still have much to do in the health delivery system, says Monica Nzarayebani, hospital administrator. The mothers are from poor backgrounds and most of them solely depend on what is provided by the hospital. During power cuts, they used to stay in darkness, since they cannot afford to buy their own candles. Now there is enough lighting in their waiting mothers shelter, as well as in the labor ward, whenever there is a power cut. It has also boosted the hospital staff morale especially among the midwives, who used to conduct deliveries using candlelight. Another benefit of using solar power is that there are no side effects, unlike the diesel generators that used to emit a lot of gasses and were noisy, which was dangerous for our pregnant mothers. Mothers have been motivated to come and wait for delivery at the hospital, reducing the number of home deliveries and maternal complications. This installation has provided a great relief to the community. Several United Methodist Women National Mission Institutions are recipients of A Call to Prayer and Self- Denial grants. Community Development for All People based in Columbus, Ohio, received a $20,000 grant for building upgrades. The institution addresses the high prevalence of infant mortality on the south side of Columbus and has partnered with Nationwide Children s Hospital to bring focus to maternal and child health needs. They sponsor a First Birthday Celebration four times a year, which reaches out to pregnant mothers and mothers who have babies up to 15 months old. They bring together social service agencies to help meet the needs of families as part of the children s birthday celebrations. The organization also rehabilitates housing to ensure that families are safe and have affordable homes. 6 INTRODUCCIÓN AL LLAMADO A LA ORACIÓN Y EL SACRIFICIO 2017 UN PROGRAMA ESPECIAL El Llamado a la Oración y el Sacrificio es una celebración anual donde la membresía y sus amistades reflexionan en el evangelio de Cristo, oran en conjunto y dedican una ofrenda para la misión con las mujeres, la niñez y la juventud en respuesta al amor y la gracia de Dios. UN PROGRAMA CON UN OBJETIVO: LA SALUD MATERNO INFANTIL Cada año, cerca de un cuarto de millón de mujeres mueren en todo el mundo por causas relacionadas con el embarazo y el parto que se pueden prevenir. Aproximadamente 19,000 niños mueren cada día por enfermedades tratables, tales como la diarrea y la tuberculosis. 8 Ofrendas que impactan a las personas El Antiguo Hospital Mutare es una de las instituciones médicas de la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Zimbabwe, situado a las afueras de Mutare, en la Provincia de Manicaland. Provee servicios médicos a 30,000 personas de los alrededores. El hospital recibió una subvención de $22,000 para utilizar energía solar en sus salas de maternidad. Esta donación permitió que el hospital instalara energía solar que se utiliza como energía suplementaria durante los cortes de luz por la noche. Estas madres están muy agradecidas por la subvención del Llamado a la Oración y el Sacrificio, aunque todavía queda mucho por hacer en el sistema de salud, dice Mónica Nzarayebani, administradora del hospital.
