ABSTRACT -Emphasized on characteristics of taxi service and activity analysis of passenger - By Lee, Woo-Suk Department of Transportation Design Graduate school of Design, Kook Min University Seoul, Korea Advised by Prof, Kim, Chul-Soo The history of passenger transportation began with the transporting of goods and people using a wheeled cart around 3500 BC in Egypt and mesopotamia The types and structures used for the means of transportation have evolved to reflect the many changes beginning from the start of human civilization up to today's society where cutting-edge digital, high tech, and so-called "High touch" technologies co-exist However, the basic objective of transporting people and goods has not changed at all The history of passenger transportation substantively beginning with horse-driven carriages has, within the short span of the modern era and the present age, expanded into the areas of land, sea and air, and its variety of types and scale can be said to be extraordinary Today, railroads and road traffic which comprise the majority of land transportation, in particular, buses and taxis are most easily used by people in everyday life, and have been maintained their position as the main arteries for supporting the flow of urban goods and manpower
Compared with the past, the flow of goods and sphere of activities have expanded by geometric progression, and accordingly, non-stop research and development have been induced by the need for improved transportation means due to new migration demands and functional needs For buses and railroads, various structures and designs based upon their respective uses have already been applied since a long time ago However, taxi transportation, which began to develop together with bus transportation, has not changed much for over half a century from the way of transportation based on passenger cars It is ironical that even though taxis have a clear distinctiveness over general mass transportation by providing high quality passenger service and can be considered as a type of "high quality mass transportation means," the demands of our rapidly changing modern age and transportation culture have not yet been satisfied Then, is the form of a passenger car truly appropriate for taxi transportation? Or do the cultural trends based on complicated lifestyles and various movement patterns of city people prove to be an exception to taxi transportation? Unfortunately, the former and latter are not properly answered by the previously described matters As we have now already passed the threshold of the twenty first century, reforms and new aspirations are continuously pursued in the political, economical and social areas, and yet new changes according to the development in modern times are not begin asked for in think about taxi transportation and our lives due to excessive clinging to only practical thinking Mediating upon the fact that automobiles and passenger transportation businesses drastically changed our culture and quality of life, for a brighter urban traffic future, continuous efforts for a modified understanding of taxi transportation and improvements to taxi usage environment must be made Also, the result of such efforts would lead to the proper advancement of taxi transportation This thesis provides an overview of the Korean domestic taxi business which has not yet escaped the systematical and cultural backwardness of the past to the present, and provides a solution based on its design aspects The establishment of a preferred taxi image, and as a part of the rebirth of a passenger transportation business to represent Korea, the suitability of taxi cars
viewed from the taxi service and user standpoints are carefully reviewed, and the trend of structural improvements to taxi vehicles as well as new forms of taxi designs are provided as examples as in order to modestly enhance the henceforth modernization of the taxi industry Firstly, the purpose, scope and method of the present research is explained in Chapter 1 Secondly, the notion of taxi transportation and its historical background are reviewed based on existing academic documents and texts in Chapter 2 Also, the state of domestic mass transportation and taxi transportation, as well as the performance, manufacturing materials, and design of taxis operating domestically and abroad are reviewed in detail Through this, the characteristics and differences in taxi cultures and vehicle structures based upon domestic and international examples are considered, so that the basic attributes of domestic taxi transportation are understood Thirdly, in chapter 3, the characteristics of domestic taxi transportation are reviewed based upon existing statistics related to taxi businesses, and the trend changes in taxi transportation are considered so as to extract a logical basis for the need in developing exclusive taxi vehicles for domestic taxi transportation particularities Fourthly, in Chapter 4, research of the characteristics in passenger and driver activities during taxi usage is conducted, and a detailed analysis based upon active sequence diagrams is made in order to extract the necessary design factors and guidelines for exclusive taxi vehicles Fifthly, in Chapter 5, designs for exclusive taxi vehicles that can be to modern and futuristic urban environment are present upon the extracted items from Chapters 3 and
4 A design process using idea sketches, package layouts, and final 'Conceptual Design and Rendering System(CDRS)' are used for rendering the interior and exterior designs of vehicles Finally, in Chapter 6, the direction in which the domestic taxi industry, currently facing much needed changes, should progress is presented in the conclusion, and a discussion regarding the direction of the development of exclusive taxi vehicles and future tasks is made Based on the above research method and sequence, establishing design standards based upon the need for improving current taxi vehicles and for future exclusive vehicle development comprise the gist of this research
