22 AOA(Angle of Arrival) A wireless subscriber can use any handset The wireless phone's signal is received at various antenna sites. Each antenna site is also equipped with additional gear to detect the compass direction from which the caller's signal is arriving. The receivers send the caller's voice call and compass data on to the mobile switch, where the angles are compared and computed to generate a latitude and longitude for the caller. 22

25 TDOA(Time Difference of Arrival) 25 A wireless subscriber can use any handset The wireless phone's signal is received at various antenna sites. Since each antenna is a (usually) different distance from the caller, the signal arrives at a (very) slightly different time. The technique requires signal timing information from at least three different antenna sites. The receivers, synchronized by an atomic clock, send the caller's voice call and timing data on to the mobile switch, where the times are compared and computed to generate a latitude and longitude for the caller.

28 LPM(Location Pattern Matching) A wireless subscriber can use any handset The wireless phone's signal is received at various antenna sites. The receivers send the caller's voice call to the mobile switch, where sophisticated equipment analyzes the acoustic radio signal, and then compares it to a database of standard signal characteristics. These characteristics include signal reflections (multipath), echoes and other signal "anomalies." The technique is effective in urban environments that include tall buildings and other obstructions. 28

30 GPS(Global Positioning System) 30 A wireless subscriber must use a handset specially equipped with GPS. Either continuously or when a 911 call is placed, the GPS electronics determine the phone's latitude and longitude. Several companies, including SnapTrack and SiRF, offer additional electronics to increase the accuracy and reliability of the GPS fix.. The antennas forward the voice and latitude and longitude data to the carrier's switch.

32 Cursor(E-OTD) The Cursor mobile location technology works by comparing the relative times of arrival of signals transmitted by the underlying mobile network Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), at the handset and at a nearby fixed receiver. The elements of the Cursor technology are illustrated below and consist of the Cursor-enabled handset, a network of Cursor Location Measurement Units (CLMU) and a central Cursor Mobile Location Centre (CMLC). The Cursor technology overlays an existing mobile network and provides the location of a caller to a service provider. The CLMU provides reference data to the CMLC for calculating positions.

33 TDOA/AOA + Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) The TDOA technique works by measuring the exact time of arrival of a handset radio signal at three or more separate cell sites. Because radio waves travel at a fixed and known rate (the speed of light), by calculating the difference in arrival time at pairs of cell sites, it is possible to calculate hyperbolas on which the transmitting device is located. As seen in the figure, measurements at two pairs of cell sites (e.g. sites 1 & 2, and sites 1 & 3) create two intersecting hyperbolas indicating the location of the transmitting device. The TDOA technique typically uses existing receive antennas already present at a cell site. Angle of Arrival (AOA) The AOA technique determines the direction of arrival of a handset's signal at the cell site. The phase difference of the signal on elements of a calibrated antenna array mounted at the cell site provides the angle of arrival. The intersection of the angles from two or more sites provides the location. The AOA technique determines the direction of arrival of a handset's signal at the cell site. The intersection of the angles from two or more sites provides the location. TDOA + AOA In most applications, Geometrix meets performance requirements using only TDOA sensors. In certain circumstances TDOA sensors are augmented with AOA capability to improve coverage and accuracy. One example of this is the coverage of a rural highway where the cell site arrangement often is in a line along the highway. TDOAonly systems must overcome increased propagation loss for three-site reception. The geometry of the cell site placement challenges both TDOA-only and AOA-only systems. However, a combination of these techniques in Geometrix produces an accurate position calculation from only two sites.

36 Positioning with MS-based GPS Technology Positioning Technology MS-based first fix is cold start, but MS computes location. After first fix, MS runs without server help for approximately 30 minutes before needing assistance refresh. Approximately 1-2 seconds per fix after initial fix. Same accuracy, but does not support hybrid operation, hence potential loss of yield. Ideal for tracking is done outdoors.
