ORCID Abstract Bacteria from the genus Lactobacillus are important for the production of fermented food and dairy products, and as symbionts in human and animals. Lactobacillus acidophilus has widely been used in the production of yogurt, health foods, and even medicines. The efficacy of L. acidophilus has been proven with regards to the reduction of cholesterol, prevention and treatment of diarrhea, modulation of the immune system, suppression of cancer, etc. Using molecular biology tools, Lactobacillus acidophilus has now been reclassified into six species: L. acidophilus, L. amylovorus, L. crispatus, L gallinarium, L. gasseri, and L. johnsonii. Thus, since L. acidophilus has now been marked as a newly defined species, caution is advised when reading future publications regarding this bacterium. In this article, the results of the reclassification of L. acidophilus are mentioned after an analysis of its field inheritance was performed by my research team. Especially, L. amylovorus KU4 (formerly named as L. acidophilus KU4; KCCM 10975P) is a novel probiotic strain that is isolated from humans; it has the ability to reduce cholesterol. It has also been reported as a microorganism that effectively inhibits the growth of pathogenic E. coli. However, this Korean patent (No ) refers to a strain obtained from calves; the origin of this strain was incorrectly labeled. Furthermore, after the discovery of L. acidophilus in 1900, its role in intestinal microbiological research was described and its utilization as a probiotic was presented. Keywords Lactobacillus acidophilus, probiotics, reclassification, lactic acid bacteria 서론 젖산 (lactic acid) 을생산하는미생물인젖산균 (lactic acid bacteria) 은유산균으로도불려지는데, 유산균은일본에서처음사용한용어로순수우리말인젖을한자발음인유 ( 乳 ) 로바꾸어부른것이다. 사실, 젖당 (lactose) 이나젖산과같이젖산균으로불려져야하지만, 식품의약품안전처의식품공전을포함하여많은정부간행물과많은연구논문에서젖산균보다유산균의표현을사용하기때문에본논문에서도유산균으로통일하여표기를하였다. 유산균은발효식품에아주오래전부터이용되어왔는데, 유산균이탄수화물을분해하여젖산을빠르게생산함으로써식품의보존성을증진시키고독특한풍미를지니도록만들어주기때문이다. 현재에는발효식품뿐아니라, 의약품, 농업용및공업용발효에도유산균이널리사용되며생물산업에아주유용한미생물이다 [1]. 유산균은분류학상 Lactobacillales 목 (Order) 에속하며, Lactobacillales 는다시 Acetoanaerobium, Aerococcaceae, Carnobacteriaceae, Enterococcaceae, Lactobacillaceae, Leuconostocaceae, Streptococcaceae 의 7개의과 (family) 로구분된다. 이들중에서 Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Pediococcus, Lactococcus 그리고 Streptococcus 속 (genus) J Milk Sci Biotechnol Vol. 37, No

2 이대표적인유산균으로분류되고, 그외로 Aerococcus, Carnobacterium, Enterococcus, Oenococcus, Sporolactobacillus, Tetragenococcus, Vagococcus 및 Weissella 속미생물이유산균의범주에속한다 [1]. Lactobacillus 속유산균은프로바이오틱스 (probiotics) 에포함되는미생물중에서가장많은종류를차지하고있는데, 인간및동물의장, 우유및유제품, 식육제품, 식물등에서분리되며, 젖산발효를통한젖산뿐아니라, 식품의조직특성과풍미를주기때문에발효식품의생산에중요한유산균속 (genus) 이다. Lactobacillus 속유산균은 Gram 양성으로포자를형성하지않으며, catalase 를생산하지않는미생물로대부분위산에강한성질을지니고있다 [2]. Lactobacillus 속은 2019년 4월현재까지약 230종 (species) 이알려져있는데, 계속새로운종이밝혀지고있어종 (species) 의숫자는큰의미가없다. Lactobaciilus 속유산균은현재가장많이연구된미생물속의하나이며, 많은수가전장유전체 (whole genome sequence) 분석이완료되었고, 지금까지도계속진행중이다. Lactobacillus 속은탄수화물대사 (metabolism) 특성에따라다음과같이 3가지 group 즉, obligate homofermentative(group 1), facultative heterofermentative(group 2), 그리고 obligate heterofermentative(group 3) 로나누어지는데, 발효유제품에는 group 1에속하는 lactobacilli 가주로이용된다. Lactobacillus 속유산균의 genome 은 1.2 Mb(L. sanfranciscensis ) 4.9 Mb (megabases; L. parakefiri ) 크기의분포를보이는데, 이들유전자가코딩하는단백질유전자의숫자역시 1,267 4,758로 species 에따라다양하다. 또한, 같은종 (species) 일지라도 genome 차이가있는데, L. crispatus 의경우 Mb의 genome 크기를나타낸다. Lactobacillus 속중에서가장많이연구되어있는 L. acidophilus 와 L. plantarum 의평균적인 genome 크기는각각 1.8 Mb와 3.4 Mb 정도로 L. plantarum 이약 1.7배많은 genome 을가지고있다 L. plantarum 은다른 Lactobacillus 들과다르게토양부터식물, 식품, 분변다양한곳에서발견되며, 환경에대한적응력이우수한특징을지닌다. 아마도이러한특성은다른종보다상대적으로많은유전자를가지고있기때문일것이다. 본논문은 Probiotics 로써의 L. acidophilus 에대한역사적연구에대하여고찰하고자하였으며, 내용중일부는저자의논문인유산균 Probiotics 와생명의연장에대한고찰 [1] 과 Lactobacillus acidophilus 의산업적이용역사 [2] 에서부분인용했음을밝혀두는바이다. 또한, Bull 등이지적한바와같이 L. acidophilus 의전장유전체분석후재분류된것에대한종들을밝히고자하였으며 [3], 본연구팀에서발표한여러문헌과특허에서보고한이후재분류된 strain 과 source 에대한표기상의오류를바로잡고자하였다. 본론 1. Lactobacillus acidophilus 의역사 L. acidophilus 의발견은장내에존재하는미생물의연구에서시작되었는데, 장내세균에대하여최초로과학적이고체계적인연구를수행한과학자는대장균을처음발견한 Theodor Escherich ( ) 이다 [4]. 그는건강한유아와질병이있는유아로부터얻어진분변을대상으로미생물을조사하였는데, 건강한유아의분변에는 2종류의그람양성간균이우점되어있는것을발견하였다. 그러나당시는미생물학이막태동하여발전되는시기로미생물의분리및배양기술이지금과같은수준이아니어서이들미생물을순수분리하는데어려움이많았다. 그이후에 Tisser 와 Moro가두미생물이각각 Bifidobacteria(Bacillus bifidus) 와 Lactobacillus acidophilus(bacillus acidophilus) 임으로보고하였다. 우연의일치인지는몰라도두과학자는같은해에각각논문을발표하였 156 J Milk Sci Biotechnol Vol. 37, No. 3

3 프로바이오틱스로서의 Lactobacillus acidophilus 다 [5, 6]. 19세기말부터 20세기초까지인체장내미생물의연구는현재우리가짐작하는것이상으로많은연구가진행되었다 [7, 8]. Mac Neal 등은성인분변에존재하는미생물수는 정도로보고하였는데 [9, 10], 2014년미국미생물학회에서발표한장내미생물수인 와비교하면당시장내세균의연구가얼마나활발하게이루어졌는지짐작할수있다 [11]. Ernest Moro ( ) 는 Lactobacillus acidophilus 를최초로분리한과학자로잘알려져있다 (Fig. 1). Moro는오스트리아의소아과의사로오스트리아 Graz에서 1899년의학을공부한후비엔나에서대장균을발견한 Escherich 와같이연구를수행하였고, 1911년하이델베르크대학소아과교수가되었다 [12]. Moro 는분유를먹는것보다모유를먹는것이유아의혈액에서더강한항균작용이있다는것을처음으로발견하기도하였다. 1900년 Moro는유아의분변에서 Bacillus acidophilus 가존재함을처음보고하였는데, 이미생물은그람양성막대형태의미생물로집락의모양이미세한빛을내거나 (fine radiant), 분지되고돌출된 (ramified projections) 작고비정형형태라고하였다. 또한, 이미생물은우유에서약한산생성을보였다고하였다 [6, 10, 13]. 또한, 1901 년 Cahn 은모유수유유아뿐아니라조제분유를먹는유아의분변에서도 B. acidophilus 가존재한다고보고하였으며, Weiss 는우유섭취를많이한경우 Moro 가발견한 B. acidophilus 와유사한형태의유산균이증가한다고보고하였다 [14]. 주는후에 L. acidophilus Holland strain 으로알려져있다가 L. acidophilus ATCC4356 으로 L. acidophilus 의표준 strain 으로자리잡게되었다. Moro 가분리했던균주가 L. acidophilus 로자리잡기까지여러우여곡절이있었는데, 당시미생물학의기술로 L. casei 와구분이어려워 1947년 L.

4 주는후에 L. acidophilus Holland strain 으로알려져있다가 L. acidophilus ATCC4356 으로 L. acidophilus 의표준 strain 으로자리잡게되었다. Moro 가분리했던균주가 L. acidophilus 로자리잡기까지여러우여곡절이있었는데, 당시미생물학의기술로 L. casei 와구분이어려워 1947년 L. acidophilus Holland strain 과 L. casei Holland strain 은다른것으로최종결론이나기전까지는혼용되어서사용되었던같다 [15]. 사실두균주모두 Gram 양성으로 short rod 형태로육안으로만보면유사하지만, 당발효성, 유전체분석, 대사체분석등으로현재에는쉽게구분된다. Moro 연구이후부터 1970 년대까지장점막표면에서많은 Lactobacillus 들이분리되었는데, 대부분 L. acidophilus 로명명되었다. 당시에는유산균의동정을집락의형택, 그람염색, 당발효성, 산생성등전통적인방법으로동정하였기때문에 L. acidophilus 가아닌다른 Lactobacillus 들도 L. acidophilus 로동정되었을것이다. 사실이들중상당수가훗날다른 species 로재분류가되었다. 전통적인방법이라고전부틀린것은아니었는데, 유산균의분류및동정에있어서가장많이참고하는것은 Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology 에제시된방법이었다 [16]. 아마도중견급이상유산균연구자와그실험실은전부이책으로유산균을동정했을것이다. 2000년대중반에는 16s rdna 분석의비용이많이저렴해져서상업적으로판매되는 API 50CHL 을이용한당테스트로동정하는것보다 16s rdna 분석을주로이용하게되는데, 16s rdna 분석방법도어떠한 primer 를사용하는가에따라다른결과를보이기때문에주의를기울여야한다. 최근에는선발된유산균을동정하고, 그특성을규명하기위해서는전장유전체분석 (whole genome sequence) 이필수적이며, 많은 strain들이전장유전체분석을통하여최종적으로동정되었다. Fig. 2는 L. acidophilus 의 100년역사를연대기순으로나열한것으로프로바이오틱스로자리매김을할때까지 L. acidophilus 의동정과분류연구에많은시간과노력이있었음을알수있다. 2. Lactobacillus acidophilus 의특성프로바이오틱스 (probiotics) 에대한개념이생기기이전에인체유용한미생물로써의 L. acidophilus 를연구한과학자는미국 Yale 대학교미생물학과의 Rettger 교수이다. 그는 1921년발표한 Lactobacillus acidophilus 이식술에특별히참고할만한장내미생물의전환에관한논문 (A treatise on the transformation of the intestinal flora with special reference to the implantation of Bacillus acidophilus) 논문 (Fig. 3) 에서 L. acidophilus 는분변에서발견되는것으로보아장내정착이가능한균주며, 쥐에게 L. acidophilus를급여한결과, 장에서 L. 5 프로바이오틱스로서의 Lactobacillus acidophilus acidophilus 가우점되어있었다고주장하였다 [10]. 또한, Rettger 는 L. acidophilus 에대한동물과인체실험에서이유산균은인체분변에서발견되고, 변비증상을완화시키는효능이있는데, 설사환자들에게직장으로 L. acidophilus 를투여시개선되었다는연구결과를발표하였다 [10]. Lactobacillus acidophilus 의프로바이오틱스로써의특성은 Fig. 4에요약한바와같으며, 최근까지, 대한많은임상적연구결과가이루어졌다. 그결과혈중콜레스테롤의감소 [17, 18], 설사예방및치료 [19], 과민성대장증후군의완화, 감기예방및증상완화 [20], 엘러지증상의완화 [21], 체중조절 [22] 등에효과가과학적으로확인되었다. 3. Lactobacillus acidophilus 의재분류 Lactobacillus acidophilus 는 1990 년이전까지여러 group 으로나누어져있었는데, 1992 년 Fujisawa 등이특정 L. acidophilus group 은 L gallinarum, L. johnsonii, L. amylovorus 로구분 (A) (B) (C) (D) Fig. 3. Adapted from Bull et al. with permission of Oxford University Press [3]. 된다고보고하였다 [23]. 그후에, Lactobacillus acidophilus 는 L. acidophilus, L. amylovorus, L. crispatus, L. gallinarum, L. gasseri, L. johnsonii 의 6개의 DNA homology group 으로구성되어있다는논문이발표된이후에 6종으로재분류되었다 [24]. 사실 1990년대까지만하더라도, Lactobacillus 속 (genus) 에는약 60종 (species) 정도만알려져있었고, 2019년현재에는약 230종으로약 4배이상그수가증가하였다. 이는새로운종을찾았기때문에증가한면도있었지만, 기존의분류된종을전장유전체와같은정보를바탕으로새로운종으로구분하여재분류하는경우도많이있었기때문이다. 사실이중에서상당수가아종 (subspecies) 으로세분화되었는데, 향후에도기존에보고되었던 strain 들이새로운종이나아종으로재분류되는것이지속적으로발생할것이다. 본논문에언급되는 L. acidophilus group 또는 L. acidophilus family 는 L. acidophilus, L. amylovorus, L. crispatus, L gallinarum, L. gasseri, L. johnsonii 를전부포함하는의미로사용하였다. Table 1은본연구팀에서기존에보고한 L. acidophilus 중재분류된것과다른연구자들의균주중일부재분류된것을발췌하여제시한것이다. Table 1. 7 프로바이오틱스로서의 Lactobacillus acidophilus 1992년 Kim은인체유래 20종, 돼지유래 28종, 송아지유래 22종을포함하여닭에서 6종, 설치류에서 10종, 칠면조에서 7종의유산균을분리하여총 93종으로연구를진행한학위논문을발표하였다 [25]. 당시미생물의동정은탄수화물발효특성, 세포모양등으로수행하였으며, 추후에 DNA-DNA homology, GC 함량, 16s rdna 분석으로재확인하였다. L. acidophilus 30SC 균주의경우, 1992년처음언급된논문에서는이균주의 origin 이송아지로되어있었으나, 2000년 Oh 등의논문에서는 human 에서분리한것으로잘못기술되어있으며 [26], 무엇보다도전장유전체분석후 L. acidophilus 가아닌 L. amylovorus 로판명되어 L. amylovorus 30SC로재명명하였다. L. acidophilus KU4는 1992년논문에서언급한 606 strain 을재명명한것으로 2009년특허출원시특허명세서에서는 Lactobacillus sp. KU4로기재를하였는데특허명에종 (species) 명을기재하지않았다. 그이유는당시에도계속속명이바뀌고있는상황이었기때문인데, 연구팀의탄수화물발효성평가와 16S rdna 분석결과, L. acidophilus 로나타나특허본문에는 L. acidophilus KU4 로표기하였다 [27]. 그러나최근 KU4 균주에대하여전장유전체분석결과, L. amylovorus 로밝혀져 L. amylovorus KU4로다시명명하였다. 그리고특허본문에는 Lactobacillu sp. KU4가 pig origin 되어있는데, 1992 년논문에서 human origin 으로표시되어있는점으로보아특허작성과정에서실수로오기재된것으로최종확인되었다 [25, 27] L. amylovorus KU4는 L. acidophilus NS1 균주 [22] 와더불어혈중콜레스테롤억제작용과비만관련인자들을효과적으로억제시키는것으로확인되어향후기능성프로바이오틱스로기대가되는균주이다. 다국적기업인네슬레에서개발한 L. acidophilus La1은 L. johnsonii NCC533 으로재명명되었으며 [28], 유제품, 이유식, 의약품, 애완동물사료및화장품에이르기까지다양하게사용되는프로바이오틱스이다. L. acidophilus IFO3532 는채소에서분리되었는데, L. casei subsp. rhamnosus Hansen IFO3532 로재분류되었다. 이균주는높은삼투압에서도견디는성질이있어서 stress 반응기전연구에많이사용되었다 [29]. 세계적인종균회사 Chr. Hansen(Horsholm, Denmark) 에서생산하는 L. reuteri RC-14 는 L. acidophilus RC-14 로최초명명되었다가재분류되었으며, 현재여성용건강식품으로 L. rhamnosus GR-1 균주와복합으로사용된제품으로판매되고있다 [30]. 자돈에서분리한 L. acidophilus PF01 은전장유전체분석결과 L. johnsonii 로나타나 L. johnsonii PF01로재명명되었으며 [31], 이균주는돼지의장에정착성이우수하여사료첨가제로사용이가능한프로바이오틱스로밝혀졌다. Table 2는상업적으로이용되는 L. acidophilus 균주들을열거한것으로종균회사, 유제품생산회사, 건강식품생산회사등에서자체적으로개발하여제품에첨가하고있는대표적인프로바이오틱스이다. 이들균주들은동물시험과임상시험으로생리적효능이밝혀져있어향후에도이용가치가 Table 2. 8 아주높은균주이다. 프로바이오틱스의정의및 Origin 에대한이해 프로바이오틱스라는단어는 1954년 Anti- und Probiotika 의제목으로발표한 Vergio 의논문에서처음사용되었다 [32]. 1965년 Science 에다른개체의성장을촉진시키는물질의개념으로 Lilly와 Stillwell 은프로바이오틱스를정의하였다 [33]. 가축사료에항생제를첨가하여많은부작용이보고된 1970년대에는항생제대체물질의연구가많이진행되었는데, 1974년 Parker 가 가축에있어서장내미생물의균형에도움을주는미생물과물질 을통털어서프로바이오틱스로정의하였다 [34]. 1989년 Fuller 는프로바이오틱스의정의를다음과같이재정립하였는데 [35], 장내미생물균총을증진시킴으로써숙주동물에유익한효과를주는살아있는미생물사료첨가제 로프로바이오틱스의개념을보다명확하게정의하였다. 이때까지주로프로바이오틱스는사료에첨가되는첨가제의한종류로인식되었고, 우리나라에서는생균제로번역되어현재까지도가축사료에응용되고있다. 1999년 Salmine 등은살아있는미생물뿐아니라, 미생물의세포구성성분까지도그범위를확대한정의를제안하였는데 [36], 숙주의건강에유익한효과를지닌미생물세포또는미생물세포성분 으로정의하여사균체에대한프로바이오틱스효능을포함시켰다. 그러나, 2001년 FAO/WHO 에서결정한프로바이오틱스정의를보면 [34], 유효한수준을투여하였을때숙주의건강증진을가져오는살아있는미생물 로하여생균에국한시켰으며, 건강증진효과를나타내는유효한수준을강조하여사료및식품을넘어제약산업까지그범위를확대할수있는이론적근거를마련할수있었다. 그러나 건강증진작용을나타내기위한유효한수준 을밝히기위해서는많은실험이요구되기때문에 20년가까이지난아직까지산업계에서는 FAO/WHO 정의를쉽게받아들이지않고있으나, EU를포함한많은국가에서 health claim 에대한제도적정비가완료되어가고있어조만간 probiotics 에대한정의에대한논란은사라질것이다. Fig. 5는 probiotics 에대한 FAO/WHO 보고서 2개의표지인데, 왼쪽은 2001년에아르헨티나에서회의를개최하여 probiotics 의정의와건강증진작용에대하여기술한보고서이며, 오른쪽은 2002년캐나다에서개최된회의로 probiotics 의안전성및효능평가에대한가이드라인을제시한보고서표지이다 [37, 38]. 자세한내용은이들보고서를참고하길바란다. 국내외적으로프로바이오틱스시장이확대되면서, 유산균을생산판매하는업체에서는인체유래 (human origin) 와식물유래 (plant origin) 에대한 origin 에대한강조를하고있는경우가많다. 더욱이식물유래유산균의경우, 식물성유산균이라는용어까지만들어서사용하는데, 식물성유산균의정의는무엇이며, 어떤점에서인간에게더좋은가에대한내용은젼혀없고, 단순히식물성유산균에대한광고만하고있다. 생물분류학상유산균은식물도아니고동물도아닌미생물에해당된다. 이러한제품광고의결과로 origin 에따라효능의차이가있을것이라는막연한기대를주어서소비자의선택에혼란만을가중시키고있는데, 사실과학적근거는전혀없다. 위에서언급한바와같이, 프로바이오틱스의정의를살펴보면인체또는특정개체에서기원해야한다는말은없다. 인간에게유익한작용을하는프로바이오틱스가인간으로부터유래되어야한다고규정하지않고있다. 단지, 프로바이오틱스는인체 ( 숙주 ) 에서생존해서유익한역할을해야한다고명시하고있다. 그이유는 origin 보다더중요한것이인체에유익한작용이있는가하는건강기능적측면이중요하기때문이다. 따라서프로바이오틱스를선발할때핵심적인요소는건강기능작용인것이다. 물론이전의유산균연구자들도 human origin 에대한내용은없다. 따라서프로바이오틱스를선택하는데핵심적인요소가되는것은숙주 ( 인체 ) 에대한작용이지미생물 162 J Milk Sci Biotechnol Vol. 37, No. 3

Title pages of the reports of FAO/WHO for probiotics [37, 38]. 의기원이아닌것이다. 균주의 origin 이어떻든지간에, target 하는곳에서정착하여살아가고유지해야하기때문에 strain 의능력을검증하고시험해야한다. 프로바이오틱스중의하나로알려져있는 Saccaromyces bouladi 는인체에서유래된미생물이아니지만, 많은임상연구에서인체에유익한작용을하는것으로알려져있다. 이와같이우리가인체에서분리하지않았고, 장관에정착을할수없는미생물도유익한작용을할수있는것이다. 인체에서분리했다고하는미생물은대부분분변에서분리한것이다. 인간의분변에서분리했다는것자체는장내에살아남아분변으로배출되었다는것일뿐그이상도그이하도아니다. 즉, 분변에서발견되었다는점은위장을통과하여전달된다는그자체로프로바이오틱스를선발할때하나의요소가될수는있지만인체에서분리했다는것자체가프로바이오틱스의기능적측면에서우수하다는과학적증거는없다. 분변에서분리했다는것으로만으로인간의장내에더정착할수있다는증거는될수없기때문에, human origin 프로바이오틱스가 non-human origin 보다더유익한작용을한다는과학적근거는없다. 최근시작된장내 microbiome 에대한연구는전세계적으로매우활발하게진행되고있는연구주제이다. 인체의장내세균에대한집중적연구가진행되고있기때문에멀지않은장래에오직인간에게만존재하는미생물이발견될것이다. 그러나이들미생물이인간에게만유익한작용을하는가에대한결론을얻는다는것은쉬운일이아닐것이다. 더욱이외부환경에서부터장속으로운반된미생물이장내에서식하게되면서원래없었던생리적효능이생겨나서유익한작용을하는지, 혹은그미생물이가지고있는특성자체가숙주에유익한작용을하는가에대한의문이계속남기때문이다. 결론 Lactobacillus acidophilus 를포함한많은 lactobacilli 들이장내에존재하지만, 장내에서생균수기준으로 major 미생물은결코아니다. 또한, 요구르트의경우에서도 lactobacilli 들은젖산생산과같은주요한역할을수행하나, 우유발효시 Streptpococus thermophilus 보다적게젖산을생산한다. 김치에서도 lactobacilli 가발효에주요한역할을담당하지만, 전체생균수나젖산생산능력을 J Milk Sci Biotechnol Vol. 37, No

10 비교하면다른속 (genus) 의유산균이더큰역할을한다. 그러나 Lactobacillus acidophilus family 는발효유제품, 조제분유에많이사용이되고, 건강기능성식품으로판매가되고있으며, in vitro 실험뿐아니라, 동물실험, 인체실험이가장많이된유산균중의하나임이틀림이없다. Lactobacillus acidophilus 는지금까지항균물질생산, 대장암감소작용, 유당불래증완화, 독성아민의감소, 설사증상완화등많은작용을하는것이보고되었다. Lactobacillus acidophilus 가다른유산균보다많이알려진이유는다른종보다오래전부터연구되어왔으며많은생리적효능이과학적으로증명되었기때문일것이다. 그렇기때문에다른종보다많은수의 strain 들이분리되었고, 상대적으로많은연구결과가축적되어왔다. 따라서분자생물학의발달로미생물분류가새롭게바뀌는것도다른유산균들보다상대적으로많았을것이다. Bull 등 [3] 의논문에서지적한바와같이, 잘못분류되거나, 저자의실수로잘못기재된것을밝혀야하는것은우리의의무이다. 잘못된정보를수정하는것은큰용기를필요로하지않는다. 자의건타의건간에생명과학기술이발전하면서결과의해석이 180도바뀌는것도발생하기도하는데, 미생물의분류체계변화는현재까지도진행되고있고, 앞으로도계속해서변화하면서발전해나갈것이다. 사실 L. acidophilus 와 L. acidophilus family 에속하는유산균은 1900년 Moro의연구이후전세계적으로놀랄만한연구업적을이룩해왔으며, 20세기초에이미건강기능특성이밝혀져상품화가되었다. 당시분류기준으로많은유사한균주들이 L. acidophilus 로선발및동정되었기때문에오늘날재분류가빈번하게일어나는것은결코우연이아닐것이다. Lactobacillus acidophilus family 를포함한 L. acidophilus 가유가공제품, 사료첨가제, 건강기능식품, 의약품등에광범위하게사용되는유용한 probiotics 임은주지의사실이며, 이들의생리적효능은같은 species 일지라도다르게나타나기때문에개별 strain 의특성에관한연구가필요하다는점을유념해야할것이다.
