2 UCLI72-4 Quad Charger Important Charger and Battery Safety Information Keep this guide available. It contains important safety and operating information. Battery Safety Caution Short Circuits Avoid accidental short circuiting of any battery. Allowing battery terminals to contact conductive material will create a short circuit which could cause burns and other injuries or could start a fire. Caution Don t Use Damaged Batteries Never attempt to charge a battery that is visibly damaged or is emitting odors. Caution Always Use Zebra Battery Packs Use of any batteries not approved specifically for use with this charger could cause damage to the battery or the charger and will void the warranty. Important Observe Battery Safety Precautions Always observe the safety precautions in the Lithium-ion Technical Bulletin included with each Battery Pack. Important Battery Disposal Always dispose of used batteries in accordance with local regulations. Placing used batteries into the trash or the municipal waste stream may be illegal in your area. Insulate battery contacts with a piece of tape prior to disposal. Charger Safety Caution Use the Correct Zebra Charger Only charge the supported battery pack types designated for use with this charger. Use of any battery charger not approved specifically by Zebra for use with its batteries could cause damage to the battery pack or the printer and will void any equipment warranty. Caution Correct Voltage Ensure that the Battery Charger is configured for the A.C. voltage used in your area and you are using the correct A.C. power cord and/or power supply for the intended country of use. Use the charger with the supplied power supply only, which must be plugged into an earth grounded outlet. Important Charger Location Use care in locating the Charger. Do not place it in locations where liquids or metallic objects may be dropped into the charger. Never locate the charger near any source of combustion. Do not block the ventilating slots on the top and bottom covers. Ensure that the Charger is plugged into a power source that won t accidentally be turned off if you will be charging batteries overnight. Important Indoor Use Only This charger is intended for indoor use only. Important Charger Maintenance Clean only with a dry or slightly damp, lint free cloth. Never operate a charger that has been damaged in any way. Do not disassemble the battery packs or the charger. There are no user serviceable components inside. To reduce the risk of battery explosion, follow these instructions and those included with the battery The Zebra UCLI72-4 Lithium-Ion Quad Charger is designed to charge up to four Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) QL or RW series Mobile Printer battery packs simultaneously. The unit is supplied with an external power supply compatible with all common A.C. supply voltages. A.C. voltage setting is automatic. Refer to the Setup and Specifications Sections on the following pages for more details. 4 Setting up the Charger Place the Quad Charger on a surface near an A.C. outlet. There are four mounting holes in the bottom of the charger which allow it to be secured to a table or shelf to help ensure the charging process will not be interrupted by someone inadvertently moving or unplugging either the charger or the battery packs under charge. Plug the circular four pin plug from the power supply into the back of the charger. Plug one end of the power cord into the Power Supply and the other into an earth grounded A.C. power source. The power indicator on the front panel should come on, indicating the Quad Charger is ready for use. Charging Batteries Ensure that the Charger is plugged into a power source which won t accidently be turned off if you will be charging batteries overnight. Ensure that the power indicator on the front panel is on before charging batteries. Plug a battery pack into any one of the four charging bays as shown. Note the orientation of the battery pack. Slide the battery pack into the charging bay until it stops. Then rock the battery pack back until it snaps into place. The amber indicator directly under the battery being charged will turn on if the battery is properly inserted. First it will perform a Fast Charge to bring the batteries up to a usable voltage as quickly as possible. Once 80% of the charge voltage has been reached, the charger switches over to a slower rate to finish charging the battery. The Amber indicator reports the status of the battery under charge. If on steadily, it indicates the battery is undergoing a Fast Charge ; if off, it indicates that the battery is fully charged. If the Amber indicator is flashing, it indicates a problem with the battery. The battery may be too hot or cold Full C R to be charged reliably. Try to charge the battery again when it returns to the room s ambient temperature. If the Amber indicator starts flashing on the second attempt, the battery should be discarded. The Green indicator reports the charging status. If it is flashing, and the Amber indicator is lit steadily, it reports UCLI-4 Charger Manual pg. 4

5 that the charger has completed the fast charge part of the charging cycle and is now topping off the battery at a slower charge rate. The battery pack is usable at this point although it would be more desirable to wait until the battery is full charged. If the green indicator is lit steadily, and the Amber indicator is off, the battery pack is fully charged. Refer to the chart below for a quick reference: Amber Green Battery Status On Off Charging On Flashing O.K. (80% charged) Off On Completely Charged Flashing Off Fault-Replace Battery Supported Batteries and Charging Times The Zebra UCLI72-4 Quad Charger supports the battery packs listed in the following table. The times in the following table are for completely discharged batteries. Partially discharged battery packs will take less time to reach a charged state. QL 220;QL 320 (AT ) & RW 220 (CT ) QL 420 (AT ) & RW 420 (CT ) 80% charge 1.25 hrs 2.5 hrs. Full Charge 2.5 hrs 5 hrs. The Quad Charger has a safety feature which stops charging a battery after six hours regardless of its charge state. Battery Recycling The EPA certified RBRC Battery Recycling Seal on the Lithium-Ion (Li- Ion) battery supplied with your printer indicates Zebra Technologies Corporation is voluntarily participating in an industry program to collect and recycle these batteries at the end of their useful life, when taken out of service in the United States or Canada. The RBRC program provides a convenient alternative to placing used Li-Ion batteries into the trash or the municipal waste stream, which may be illegal in your area. Please call BATTERY for information on Li-Ion battery recycling and disposal bans/restrictions in your area.
