Personally I am interested in hair coloring and fragrance. I enjoy home gardening with friends of mine to smell flowers whenever I am tired or stressed out. I enjoy meditating and speaking, so joining a book discussion group is one of my hobbies. I usually don t spend much time and money in makeup, but always try to seek for my own style. The class is usually held at a cafe or a teacher s place. I think makeup is important given it helps you feel proud of yourself. 14 22 HERA 2016 AUTUMN SEOULISTA 23 서울리스타를만나다 Meets SEOULISTA 한가지인생에만족하지않고여러커리어를쌓아가는열정적인서울리스타두명을만났습니다. 가수에서로펌변호사그리고국제기구디렉터로활동하며새로운커리어를쌓아가고있는이소은, 미메시스출판사와뮤지엄을운영하며키즈패션브랜드의론칭을준비하고있는홍유진. 한분야에매진하는것도쉽지않은일인데서로교집합이없는다양한분야에뛰어들었다는점자체만으로도도전에두려워하지않는그녀들의용기가느껴집니다. 항상역동적으로변화하고새로운것을빨리흡수하는그녀들은트렌디한서울의모습과많이닮았습니다. We met two passionate Seoulistas who refuse to settle for a single path in life, but instead actively engage in various careers. The two are Lee So-eun, a singer-turned-lawyer acting as the director at an international organization, and Hong Yu-jin, who runs Mimesis Publishing and Museum while preparing to launch a kid s fashion brand. It s not easy to focus on a single field, but to jump into various areas that do not overlap reflect their bold and courageous attitude which does not shy away from challenge. They resemble trendy Seoul in the sense that they face dynamic changes and are quick to absorb new things. 15 24 HERA 2016 AUTUMN SEOULISTA 25 인기가수, 변호사가되다이소은열정적이고다채로운서울의매력을닮은그녀 A popular singer becomes a lawyer, Lee So-eun She resembles traits of passionate and colorful Seoul 가수와변호사. 좀처럼겹쳐지지않는두개의영역을넘나들며삶을즐기고있는이소은은쉽게만날수없는이력을가졌다. 우연히작곡가에게발탁이되어 1998년 소녀 음반으로가요계에데뷔해어린나이에연예인의삶을경험해본그녀는어린시절에경험하지못한새로운영역의일을해볼기회를자신에게주고싶어서다시공부를시작했다. 가수로서의생활을잠시접고미국의로스쿨과정준비에나선그녀는서울에서 2년의준비기간을거친후, 노스웨스턴프리츠커로스쿨 입학부터뉴욕의로펌입성까지일사천리로이뤄내며자신의내면에숨어있던강인함을증명해보였다. 2015년에는뉴욕에서주목받는변호사에게주어지는 메트로슈퍼로이어라이징스타 로선정되었다. 그인연이이어져현재는국제상공회의소, 국제중재법원뉴욕지부의부회장 (deputy director) 의자리까지오르게되었는데국제관련업무에평소관심이많았던그녀에게완벽하게잘맞는역할이다. 최근국제기구의연례행사중하나인 트레이드로포럼 (trade law forum) 의아시아대표연사로뽑히게되어한국에오랜만에귀국한그녀를만났다. Singer and lawyer. Lee So-eun enjoys her life crossing over the two areas that seldom overlap. She was coincidentally discovered by a composer who helped her debut as a singer in 1998 with an album titled Girl. She set aside her singing career and began preparing for a law school in the US. She spent two years preparing in Seoul, and was accepted to Northwestern Pritzker Law School and gradually went on to work at a law firm in New York. In 2015, she was selected as a Metro Super Lawyer Rising Star which is a title honored to rising lawyers in New York. This led her to become the deputy director of the New York office for the International Court of Arbitration of International Chamber of Commerce. Recently, she was chosen as an Asia representative speaker at the international organization s annual event Trade Law Forum in Incheon. Aside from your work, what do you do to live a fun and fulfilling life? Most recently, I ve begun placing myself as a priority. I work for myself, I make efforts for myself, and I take on challenges for myself. This is the mindset I try to maintain. If I don t have a mindset like that, it is easy to get stressed and get sick because of the work intensity. 현재무슨일을하는가고려대영어영문학과를다니던대학시절부터국제사회와관련해서관심이많았다. 그래서기회가되면국제업무에관련된일을하고싶었다. 미국에서변호사가된이후로펌에서그와관련된일을자원해서배운것도같은맥락에서였다. 그이후에우연히국제상공회의소와연이닿았다. 그래서현재국제중재법원에서부회장직을맡아서국제중재와 ICC 분쟁해결에대해서조언과자문을제공하는일을하고있다. 그일이외에자신의인생을즐겁게영위하기위해어떤노력을하나최근에시작한노력은나를중심으로생각하는것. 나를위해일을하고, 나를위해노력하고, 나를위해도전하자는마인드를

16 26 HERA 2016 AUTUMN SEOULISTA 27 유지하려고노력한다. 그렇게마인드컨트롤을하지않으면일의강도가심해서스트레스를많이받고건강도나빠지게되니까. 당신에게직업은어떠한의미인가직업은나의인생에대한 지도 역할을해준다고생각한다. 가본적없는도시에처음도착했을때지도가없으면어떤곳이어디에있는지모르고헤매게되는데, 인생도그런것같다. 앞으로무슨일이일어날지모르는상황에서그래도나아갈방향을알려주고인도해주는정해진길이있으면미래를구상하는일이조금은더쉬워지는것같다. 일과일상에영감을주는것이있다면항상예술적인공감대가형성되는피아니스트인친언니가나의영감의원천이다. 그리고부모님과인생에대한이야기를많이나누는편인데, 일을결정하고추진해나가는데끊임없이동기부여를해준다. 서울리스타가본서울은어떤도시인가서울은찾을마음이있고노력하는자에게는다양한경험을제공해주는곳이다. 현재뉴욕의맨해튼, 그중가장화려하다는어퍼이스트사이드에거주중인데서울에오면늘서울의화려함에놀란다. 날로새로워지는맛집루트와놀이문화, 그리고이에어울리게계속업그레이드되는서울여자의화려한옷차림과다양한볼거리와먹거리. 트렌디한문화를만나기에는서울만한도시가없는것같다. 서울에오면즐겨가는곳이있는가광화문과경복궁, 그리고통의동근처. 이곳은개인적으로추억이많은곳이다. 로스쿨준비를위한에세이작업을광화문의 나무사이로 라는커피숍에서했다. 컴퓨터를들고참많은시간을보낸조용한카페인데, 추억이있어서인지한국에올때마다꼭방문한다. 그곳에가면로스쿨을준비하면서에세이작업을하던때의열정의시간들이떠올라마음을다시정돈할수있다. 서울리스타를꿈꾸는여자들을위한조언이있다면지금있는곳, 지금의상황을최대한즐기라고말하고싶다. 서울을떠나오니, 서울이얼마나멋진도시였는지를알게되는것같다. 뉴욕은노력하는자에게많은것을제공해주는기회의땅으로불리지만그만큼더욱치열하다. 더욱이서울처럼일상생활을하기에편리한시스템도갖추고있지않다. 서울에서하고싶은일을많이해보고자신의가치를높이며자유로운여자의일상을만끽하라고권하고싶다. What does your job mean to you? My job functions like a map in my life. When you arrive at a foreign city, then you can get lost and wander around if you don t have a map. I think that s what life is like. In a situation where you don t know what lies ahead of you, if there is a path that guides you and shows you which direction to take then it becomes easier to design your future. What inspires you in work and life? The source of my inspiration is my older sister who is a pianist. We connect on an artistic level. Also, I converse a lot with my parents about life and that always serves as a motivational factor in determining what do to and how to go about it. What city is Seoul from a Seoulista s perspective? Seoul is a place that offers abundant experience to people who seek and try. I currently reside in New York Manhattan, in the upper east area which is known for its glam. But I m still always surprised by Seoul s glamour whenever I visit the city. Tasty restaurant venues are constantly updated as well as entertainment. Along with this, Seoul women s sophisticated attire continues to upgrade. There s much to see and eat in Seoul and I think there is no other city like this place where you can come to face with a trendy culture. Any advice for women dreaming to become a Seoulista? I d like to say enjoy where you are now, as well as the circumstances you are currently in. Once I left Seoul, I realized what an amazing city it was. New York is a city of opportunity that provides a lot to those who try and work hard, but it is as competitive and more intense. It also doesn t have a convenient system like Seoul in your daily life. Do as much as you want in Seoul and maximize your own value and just enjoy the life of being a free-spirited woman. 세계에서가장자유로움을만끽할수있는도시가서울이라는걸떠나고나서알았어요. Hong Yu-jin initially considered working in something related to the family business, a publishing company operated by her father. But instead, she launched a stationery company named Mimesis Design in She is famous for her dynamic open personality and communication skills among her employees. She is bold and fearless as she did not hesitate expanding her stationery company into a company that handled both publishing and art museum business. Recently, she launched M314, a cultural space for mothers and children. She also plans to import overseas kid s brand apparel so it is quite evident that she is ambitious in expanding to a number of diverse business areas. She aims to be a stellar example of a working mom in her 30 s who is able to enjoy and live a fulfilling life in Seoul. She usually finds her work inspiration in Seoul s space and in its image. She searches and discovers hidden artistic spaces and objects all over Seoul such as bookstores, cultural towers, and museums. What do you currently do? I am in charge of planning and operating at Mimesis, which is a publishing and stationery company as well as an art museum. We began publishing mostly art books from the publishing division in My father who operated a publishing company named Open Books for 30 years helped me with this. Planning is harder than you expect and it is quite repetitive so it can be boring as well, but it is fun when you are able to reap good results and performances. Also, being able to design, make, and sell stationery items which I ve always been interested in is very exciting and fun. Having a stationery division in our company makes work more exciting. What is your greatest value in life? Selfsatisfaction is most important. It is important to listen to other people s opinions and maintain social balance, but you also need to form a habit of being satisfied with your own work. Your mind and body should be healthy, and you should be satisfied with your life in order to be generous and empathize with other people s lives and society. I want to live a joyful life, and also share this joy with others. What s your daily activity like? I live in Mimesis Art House located in Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul. The headquarters of Mimesis is within Paju Book City so I usually stay within Gwanghwamun and Paju area. I pass by Gwanghwamun everyday on my way to work and after work. The people I encounter on the streets and the electronic advertising display boards inform me of the latest trends in Seoul. What serves as inspiration in your work and daily life? I m very diligent when it comes to exploring around to see new things. Basically everything in this world is helpful to my work and becomes a source of my inspiration. I watch a lot of TV and read newspapers. I also always visit newly opened exhibitions. Seoul is nowadays referred to as a city of design, and you are sure to find design and art exhibitions here quite frequently. Exhibitions that were only offered in famous museums overseas a few years ago are now offered in Seoul so it is easy to be artistically charged. If you took a 1 night and 2-day trip in Seoul, where would you visit? I want to experience both the day and night of Itaewon. It is a place that has completely different ambience from day and night so I want to get a chance to experience both vibes. What s a unique Seoul women trait? They are very diligent in grooming their inner and outer appearance. I would say Seoul women are the trendiest women throughout the world because they are superb at absorbing new things and customizing it to themselves. What s your near future goal? I recently opened up a space M314 within the museum. It s a space for children and as a part of that, I signed a contract to import and exclusively distribute The animal s observatory which is a kid s fashion brand overseas. My short term goal is to make sure this brand is well positioned in the Korean market. It s a new business so I m a bit excited, nervous, and at the same time it is fun. Going further from that, I want to make our company become a comprehensive cultural company which encompasses publishing, exhibition, and fashion.
