Danger Do not immerse the kettle or the base in water or any other liquid. Warning Check if the voltage indicated on the appliance corresponds to the local mains voltage before you connect the appliance. Do not use the appliance if the plug, the mains cord, the base or the appliance itself is damaged. If the mains cord is damaged, you must have it replaced by Philips, a service centre authorised by Philips or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard. This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. Keep the mains cord out of the reach of children. Do not let the mains cord hang over the edge of the table or worktop on which the appliance stands. Excess cord can be stored in or around the base of the appliance. Do not place the appliance on an enclosed surface (e.g. a serving tray), as this could cause water to accumulate under the appliance, resulting in a hazardous situation. Hot water can cause serious burns. Be careful when the kettle contains hot water. Do not touch the body of the kettle during and some time after use, as it gets very hot. Always lift the kettle by its handle. Never fill the kettle beyond the maximum level indication. If the kettle has been overfilled, boiling water may be ejected from the spout and cause scalding. Do not remove the lid while the water is heating up. Be careful when you remove the lid immediately after the water has boiled: the steam that comes out of the kettle is very hot. Only use the kettle in combination with its original base. Caution Only connect the appliance to an earthed wall socket. Always place the base and the kettle on a dry, flat and stable surface. The kettle is only intended for heating up and boiling water. Do not use it to heat up soup or other liquids or jarred, bottled or tinned food. When you select a temperature below 100ºC, the water is not boiled (sterilised) first, but is heated up directly to the temperature of the selected preset button. Always make sure you fill the kettle at least up to the 1-cup indication (0.25l) to prevent the kettle from boiling dry. Depending on the hardness of the water in your area, small spots or stains may appear on the heating element of your kettle when you use it. This phenomenon is the result of scale build-up on the heating element and on the inside of the kettle over time. The harder the water, the faster scale builds up. Scale can occur in different colours. Although scale is harmless, too much scale can influence the performance and durability of your kettle. Descale your kettle regularly by following the instructions given in chapter Cleaning and descaling. Some condensation may appear on the base of the kettle. This is perfectly normal and does not mean that the kettle has any defects. This appliance is intended to be used in household and similar applications such as: 1 staff kitchen areas in shops, offices and other working environments; 2 farm houses; 3 by clients in hotels, motels and other residential type environments; 4 bed and breakfast type environments. Boil-dry protection This kettle is equipped with boil-dry protection. The boil-dry protection automatically switches off the kettle if it is accidentally switched on when there is no water or not enough water in it. Fill the kettle with approx. 1 litre of water. Leave the kettle off the base for 1 minute and then place it on the base. The kettle is now ready for use again. Electromagnetic fields (EMF) This Philips appliance complies with all standards regarding electromagnetic fields (EMF). If handled properly and according to the instructions in this user manual, the appliance is safe to use based on scientific evidence available today. Before first use 1 Remove stickers, if any, from the base or the kettle. 2 Place the base on a dry, stable and flat surface. 3 To adjust the length of the cord, wind part of it around the cord storage facility in the bottom of the base (Fig. 2). 4 Rinse the kettle with water. 5 Fill the kettle with water up to the MAX indication and let the water boil once (see chapter Using the appliance ). 6 Pour out the hot water and rinse the kettle once more. Changing the frequency of the descaling reminder The calc light lights up after a fixed amount of usages, based on average water hardness. You can change this frequency by setting a lower or higher water hardness or you can completely switch off the descaling reminder. 1 Press the herbal tea/fruit tea button and the personal setting button at the same time. (Fig. 3) Both buttons and the display light up. The display shows A, for average (Fig. 4). 2 Use the arrow buttons to adjust the water hardness (Fig. 5). You can adjust the hardness to H, for high, or L for low. 3 Press the herbal tea/fruit tea button and the personal setting button at the same time again to confirm the new setting. Note: If you do not confirm the new setting, the change is not stored. Switching off the descaling reminder Follow the steps in section Changing the frequency of the descaling reminder and select - to switch off the descaling reminder. Using the appliance 1 Press the lid release button (1). The lid opens automatically (2) (Fig. 6). 2 Fill the kettle with the desired amount of water (Fig. 7). Note: You can also fill the kettle through the spout. 3 Close the lid (Fig. 8). 4 Place the kettle on its base and put the plug in the wall socket (Fig. 9). The appliance is now ready for use. Heating up water with preset buttons Different hot drinks require different temperatures to taste their best. With the preset buttons on the base, you can choose the right temperature for your favourite hot drink. To make sure the appliance accurately* heats up the water to the set temperature, fill the kettle with at least 0.25l water. * This kettle has been designed to achieve maximum temperature accuracy. However, the actual temperature of the water may deviate slightly from the indicated temperature.

3 HD9380/HD9384: There are 4 buttons that represent different hot drinks: black tea (100ºC), green tea (80ºC), herbal/fruit tea (100ºC) and instant coffee (90ºC). There is also a 40ºC button and a KEEP WARM button. (Fig. 10) HD9386: There are 5 buttons that represent different hot drinks: black tea (100ºC), green tea (80ºC), herbal/fruit tea (100ºC), instant coffee (90ºC) and instant soup/hot chocolate (95ºC). There is also a personal setting button (40ºC-100ºC). HD9388: There are 4 buttons that represent different tea types: black tea (100ºC), green tea (80ºC), herbal/fruit tea (100ºC) and rooibos tea (100ºC). There is also a personal setting button (60ºC-100ºC) and a KEEP WARM button. Note: The control panel of type HD9388 is shown in the following pictures. The control panels of types HD9386, HD9384 and HD9380 look different, but the preset buttons work in the same way. Types HD9388 and HD9386 have a display, types HD9384 and HD9380 do not have a display. 1 Press one of the preset buttons. HD9386/HD9388 only: When you press a preset button, the temperature of the selected button is shown on the display for 3 seconds (Fig. 11). The water starts heating to the temperature of the selected preset button. While the water is heated, the light ring around the selected button slowly pulsates and the temperature rise is shown on the display (HD9386/HD9388 only) until the water has reached the desired temperature (Fig. 12). If the current temperature of the water in the kettle is higher than the temperature of the selected preset button, the light ring does not pulsate, but flashes 3 times to indicate that this button cannot be operated (Fig. 13). Note: You can deactivate the appliance by pressing the button again or by removing the kettle from the base. 2 The kettle heats the water to the temperature of the selected preset button. When the water has reached the set temperature, you hear an audible signal. The light ring around the selected button stops pulsating and lights up continuously (Fig. 14). Note: The audible signal is repeated as a reminder after 2 minutes. Note: You can select a different type of hot drink by pressing a different preset button while the kettle is operating. This is only possible if the temperature of the water is still below the temperature of the newly pressed button. Personal setting button (HD9386/HD9388 only) You can use the personal setting button to set a temperature that you prefer between 40ºC and 100ºC (HD9386) or between 60ºC and 100ºC (HD9388) in steps of 5ºC. Note: You cannot set a lower temperature than the temperature of the water in the kettle. 1 Press the personal setting button (Fig. 15). The display and the two arrow buttons light up. The last used temperature is shown on the display. Note: When you use the personal setting button for the first time, the lowest temperature is shown. 2 Adjust the temperature with the arrow buttons (Fig. 16). 3 Press the personal setting button again to confirm the temperature. The display flashes twice to confirm the temperature. The display shows the temperature rise of the water and the light ring around the personal setting button slowly pulsates until the water has reached the set temperature (Fig. 17). Note: If you do not change the temperature and do not press the personal setting button to confirm, the C icon flashes to remind you that the temperature can be adjusted. Note: If the water is already hot, you cannot set a temperature lower than the temperature of the water in the kettle. In that case, the left arrow button goes out to indicate that you cannot select a lower temperature. Note: When you have used the personal setting button, the temperature of this button is stored as the default temperature for the next use. Keeping water warm You can use the keep-warm function to keep water warm for 30 minutes at the temperatures of the different preset buttons (40 C, 80 C, 90 C, 95 C or 100 C) or the personal setting button. Note: Only use the keep-warm function in combination with a preset button or the personal setting button. Only use the keep-warm function when there is at least 0.25l water in the kettle. If there is too little water in the kettle, the kettle may switch off before the 30 minutes have elapsed to protect the heating element. Keeping water warm at a desired temperature 1 Press a preset button or the personal setting button (HD9386/ HD9388 only) to set the desired temperature (see sections Heating up water with preset buttons and Personal setting button in this chapter). 2 Press the KEEP WARM button (Fig. 18). When the kettle heats up the water to keep it at the selected temperature, the light ring around the KEEP WARM button lights up continuously. The selected temperature is shown on the display (HD9386/HD9388 only). When the water has reached the selected temperature, the light ring around the KEEP WARM button slowly pulsates until the keep-warm function is cancelled or switches off automatically after 30 minutes. Note: If you press the KEEP WARM button before you press a preset button or the personal setting button (HD9386/HD9388 only), nothing happens. If you have just prepared hot water, you can press the same preset button or the personal setting button (HD9386/HD9388 only) again and then press the KEEP WARM button. 3 The kettle keeps the water warm for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, you hear an audible signal and the appliance switches off automatically. Note: You can stop the keep-warm process at any time. To do so, press the KEEP WARM button again, press the selected preset button or the personal setting button (HD9386/HD9388 only) or remove the kettle from the base. Note: If you remove the kettle from the base, the set keep-warm temperature is lost. Note: If you press another preset button or the personal setting button (HD9386/HD9388 only) while the keep-warm function is activated, the keepwarm function switches off and the kettle starts heating up the water to the temperature of the preset button or the personal setting button. Note: If the keep-warm function has not been activated, the appliance switches off automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity. Cleaning and descaling Always unplug the base before you clean it Always remove the kettle from the base before you clean the kettle. Never immerse the kettle or its base in water. Never use scouring pads, abrasive cleaning agents or aggressive liquids such as petrol or acetone to clean the appliance. Cleaning the kettle and the base 1 Clean the outside of the kettle and the base with a soft cloth moistened with warm water and some mild cleaning agent. Caution: Do not let the moist cloth come into contact with the cord, the plug and the connector of the base. Cleaning the filter Scale is not harmful to your health but it may give your drink a powdery taste. The anti-scale filter prevents scale particles from ending up in your drink. Clean the single-action filter regularly in the following way: 1 Take the filter out of the kettle (Fig. 19). 2 Gently clean the filter with a soft nylon brush. 3 Slide the filter back into the kettle. Note: HD9386/HD9388 only: The filter at the bottom of the kettle cannot be removed. You can clean this filter by descaling the kettle, see sections Descaling the kettle below. Descaling the kettle (HD9380/HD9384) Regular descaling prolongs the lifetime of the kettle. In case of normal use (up to 5 times a day), the following descaling frequency is recommended: Once every 6 months for areas with low water hardness. Once every 3 months for areas with average water hardness.

4 Once every month for areas with high water hardness. 1 Fill the kettle with white vinegar (8% acetic acid) up to one quarter of the MAX indication. 2 Add water to the MAX indication. 3 Press the green tea button to heat up the water to 80ºC and then press the KEEP WARM button. 4 Empty the kettle after 30 minutes and rinse the inside thoroughly. 5 Repeat the descaling procedure if there is still some scale in the kettle. Note: You can also use an appropriate descaler. In that case, follow the instructions on the package of the descaler. Descaling the kettle (HD9386/HD9388) If the kettle needs to be descaled, the calc light lights up on the display of the base. 1 Fill the kettle with white vinegar (8% acetic acid) up to one quarter of the MAX indication. 2 Add water to the MAX indication. 3 To start the descaling process, press the black tea button and the personal setting button at the same time (Fig. 20). The kettle heats up the water to 80ºC. During the descaling process, the calc light slowly pulsates until the descaling process has finished. The display counts down the time of the descaling process (30 minutes) in steps of 5 minutes. The time on the display slowly pulsates. When the descaling process is finished, you hear an audible signal and the appliance switches off automatically. 4 Follow steps 4 and 5 in section Descaling the kettle (HD9380/ HD9384) above. Note: If you take the kettle off the base before the descaling process is finished, the appliance switches off automatically. You can also deactivate the descaling process by pressing any of the preset buttons. Note: If you do not descale the kettle, the calc light lights up the next 5 times you use the kettle. Storage To store the cord, wind it around the cord storage facility in the bottom of the base (Fig. 2). Troubleshooting This chapter summarises the most common problems you could encounter with the appliance. If you are unable to solve the problem with the information below, visit for a list of frequently asked questions or contact the Consumer Care Centre in your country. Signal The light ring around one preset button lights up while the other light rings are off. The light ring of the preset button I pressed flashes 3 times. Meaning/solution After the water has reached the set temperature, the light of the selected preset button stays on for 5 minutes. The temperature of the water is higher than the temperature of the selected preset button. Signal E5 appears on the display. The kettle beeps. Problem I cannot set the desired temperature. I try to switch on the kettle but it switches off automatically. The kettle switches off automatically when the keepwarm function is active. 한국어 Meaning/solution The kettle is out of order. Contact an authorised Philips service centre or the Consumer Care Centre in your country. The water has reached the set temperature. Possible solution The current temperature of the water in the kettle is probably higher than the temperature you want to set. You can add cold water to the kettle. If you wish to reheat the water immediately, you can only select 100ºC. When there is no water in the kettle, the boildry protection trips and the kettle switches off automatically. You may need to put more water in the kettle (at least 0.25 litres). The kettle is not placed on its base correctly. Remove the kettle from the base and correctly place it on the base again. The kettle keeps the water warm for 30 minutes and then switches off automatically.
