The system is intended to transmit a security alert to the shore, when the ship is attacked by pirates, terrorists and so on, to indicate to a competent authority the security of the ship is under treat without making aware of the people on board.

Other cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and upward and mobile offshore drilling units - Not later than the first survey of the radio installation after 1 July 2006 FURUNO SSAS New building FELCOM16 SSAS Version Dedicated SSAS employing Inmarsat Mini-C system. FELCOM15 Two optional SSAS buttons are needed to upgrade to SSAS the FELCOM 15 already installed as the part of GMDSS. Retrofitting FELCOM12 / FELCOM15 SSAS Modification kit including two SSAS buttons and version up software (I/F unit also necessary for FELCOM12)

Main Features of FELCOM16 SSAS Version Employs Inmarsat Mini-C system Multi-packet transmission enables simultaneous report to the owner as well as to an authority. Optional battery backs up power for 5 days max. GPS is incorporated. Compact antenna and main black box unit will provide ease of installation out of sight. Polling function enables tracking of the ship even though the ship was lost to communication. Data reporting function enables to inform ship s position at a regular interval. Inmarsat Mini-C system is proven for VMS(Vessel Monitoring System) as well. Main Features of FELCOM15 Employs Inmarsat C system Easiest solution of SSAS at minimum cost. Dual-packet transmission enables simultaneous report to the owner as well as to an authority Polling function enables tracking of the ship even though the ship was lost to communication. Data reporting function enables to inform ship s position at a regular interval. Modification allows to add SSAS function to the already installed FELCOM12 and FELCOM15.

Transmission of security alerts Conventional alert protocol is used. No audible/visible alarm on board Flip up the protection cover and press the alert button. The ship s position data along with date and time are transmitted when the alert button is pressed. The transmission of alert can be cancelled by pressing the alert button again within 30 seconds after activation. A system may employ proprietary tracking equipment provided by traffic service providers. A system may utilize modifications of GMDSS equipment A system may utilize the exchange of messages containing key words between a ship and typically, the Company. Requires two activation points, one of which should be on the bridge.
