Abstract The Tsubouchi Memorial THEATRE MUSEUM of Waseda University, which was built in memory of Tsubouchi Shoyo(1859 1935), has a collection of Korean drama masks that were donated in the 1930s 1940s. The masks were surveyed for six days from July 11 16, 2005, by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage as part of its bid to research Korean cultural properties located overseas. These drama masks are commonly divided into three categories: Sandaenori masks, Byeolsandaenori masks, and Haeseo masked-dance masks. The Sandaenori masks were donated by the folklorist Jeong In-seop in 1935. They have holes at both ears, and show traces of sweat, suggesting that they were worn. These paper masks have a very simple form, and are shaped like a gourd with a protruding nose. They were made to be very thick by attaching several sheets of traditional Korean window paper or pages of books. Notably, they offer a good representation of the facial characteristics of the characters of the drama. Byeolsandaenori masks are presumed, given their characteristics, to be Haeju byeolsandae masks. The museum record shows that these masks were donated on January 10, 1939. They are very simple, but maintain the basic characteristics of a drama mask. According to the record, the Haeseo masked-dance masks were donated by Fujii Motoko on September 28, 1943. In particular, their facial patterns represent a unique type not found in those handed down in Korea, and as such draw considerable attention. Also, the playbook of a Haeju masked-dance mask has been handed down in Korea, though the features of the mask have not survived. As such, they constitute an invaluable material for research into Haeseo masked-dance masks. 164 165
