Gyeonggi , Korea Abstract: This study was conducted as a part of the study initiated by the Korea National Arboretum in 2010 to collect data on regional biological resources. A total of 5 collection sessions were conducted between April and September of 2010 to examine the insect fauna of Bannonsan (Mt.) (1,068.4 m), located in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do. As a result, a total of 12 orders, 96 families, 468 species and 1,059 individuals were observed during the study. Keywords: Insect fauna, Bannonsan (Mt.), Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea Introduction Bannonsan (Mt.) (1,068.4 m), which stretches over Goyangri, Yeoryang-ri and Bongjeong-ri, is located to the north and east side of Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do. It borders Wangjaesan (Mt.) (997.2 m) to the north, Sangjeongbaui (Mt.) (1,006.2 m) to the west and Goyangsan (Mt.) (1,151 m) to the south and is one of the backwood mountains of Gangwon-do. This region is the habitat of the royal azalea (Rhododendron schlippenbachii Maxim), the 348th natural monument of South Korea and Saussurea seoulensis Nakai. The royal azalea, approximately 180 years old, a height of 4.96 and 1.08 m in circumference, is observed along ridges 1,040 m above sea level. The area also includes a wide range of Saussurea seoulensis Nakai species, such as Saussurea macrolepis (Nakai) Kitam and Saussurea eriophylla Nakai. The valley area is also characterized by special species, such as Leontopodium setsugakuense Kitam., Scabiosa mansenensis for. alpina Nak., Vicia chosenensis Ohwi and Lathyrus vaniotii H. Lev., and rare species, such as Dracocephalum rupestre Hance and Abelia mosanensis T.H.Chung, as well as northern plants of Aconitum sibiricum POIR, creating a blend of broad-leaved forest and coniferous forest. Past studies on the biota of Bannonsan (Mt.) have been conducted primarily on the mountain s flora. In the light of the fact that comprehensive studies on its insect fauna have not ben conducted, this study will be important in obtaining information regarding the region s mountain insect distribution. Tel: eucosma@korea.kr analyze the insect fauna of Bannonsan (Mt.) and to obtain basic data for other relevant studies. Material and Method A total of 5 collection sessions were conducted between April and September of 2010 to examine the insect fauna of Bannonsan (Mt.) (1,068.4 m), located in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do. Daytime and nighttime sessions were conducted between April, when insects begin to make appearance, and September, when characters begin to reduce in numbers, and the study focus on the types and time of appearance of insects. Brandishing or sweeping methods with nets were used while moving along roads and hiking trails during the day, and light traps were used during the night to attract insects to be captured into small vial tubes (1.0 mm 5.0 mm) to be collected or placed into ammonia-containing killing jars before being taken to the lab for dry specimen preparation and identification. Primarily order Lepidoptera, order Diptera and Coleoptera were collected during daytime sessions, and butterflies and moths were collected during nighttime sessions. During the day, collection took place between 10:00 and 17:00, and during the night, collection took place during 3 to 4 hours after sunset. Insect species which have been prepared into specimen were identified and classified into orders and families (Byun et al., 1998; Han et al., 2001; Hong et al., 2000; Inoue et al., 1973; Kononenko, V.S., 1998; Nagane et al., 1973; Park & Ponomrenko, 2007; Park & Kim, 1997) based on Check List of Insects from Korea (1994) and Checklist of Korean Insects (2010). Furthermore, Google Earth V was used to secure satellite image of the Bannonsan (Mt.) region. All insect specimen prepare during this study are stored in the Mountain Forest Biospecimen Center of the

Result and Discussion A total of 12 orders, 96 families, 468 species and 1,059 individuals of insects were collected and examined during this study conducted over 5 sessions between April and September of 2010 on Bannonsan (Mt.) (1,068.4 m), located in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do. The numbers are higher than the 8 orders, 75 families, 383 species and 1,042 individuals (Lim et al, 2010) reported by a study conducted over 3 session on the nearby mountain of Daemisan (Mt.) (1,232.4m). This may be the result of plant distribution, geographical location and climate factors. In terms of taxa, members of order Lepidoptera were observed the most, at 26 families, 198 species and 496 individuals, followed by order Coleoptera at 21 families, 81 Table 1. Furthermore, 11 species requiring authorization for export and 6 Korean Indigenous Species were collected (Table 3). Taxa unidentified as a result of the absence of a specialist were recorded using sp. annotation, and they will require detailed studies in the future. In terms of the time of the study, the lowest number of taxa were collected in April, at 3 orders, 9 families, 12 species and 26 individuals, and the highest numbers were collected in June, at 9 orders, 53 families, 166 species and 355 individuals. 9 orders, 25 families, 58 species and 117 individuals were observed in September, and this showed that the highest insect diversity is observed between May and August (Table 2, Fig. 2). In April, Bombylius major Linné was observed the most frequently, and in May, Agelasa nigriceps Motschulsky and Dasysyrphus albostriatus Fallén were observed the most frequently. Furthermore, Ninodes watanabei Inoue was observed the most frequently in June, Pachyodes superans Butler in July, and Limois emelianovi Oshanin in September.
