Applying to Universities! The following is helpful information and a timeline regarding university applications outside of South Korea Most Universities outside of South Korea have a September - April (or May ) School year so admission deadlines are different than what you may be used to All applications will be submitted before January 31, 2015 but the University does not usually make decisions until April or May Each university sets its own admission requirements and they may change each year final official acceptance does not occur until a final graduation transcript is sent to the university but all universities will give students acceptance so that visas and plans can be made Our students may apply to any English Speaking University as an undergraduate, first year student. This includes North America, England, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Middle East We will encourage our graduates to apply to a minimum of 4 universities. They are very likely to be accepted at their first choice but as the year progresses, the graduates may change his/her mind and we want them to be prepared General Information About University Admissions There is usually a minimum percentage admission requirement for entrance to University as well minimum course requirements. Then each program or faculty has different requirements. Different faculties will put more emphasis on different subjects. Some will be required and some will be suggested Science Programs will look at the number of science courses taken in grades 11 and 12 as well as probably require a Math 12 course Arts courses will look at and accept fewer math and science courses at the grade 11 and 12 level To give you an idea of what this means you can check out UBC requirements at this link http://you.ubc.ca/admissions/canadian-highschools/bc-yukon/
Universities tend to look at more than just a student s GPA (see GPA below). They want to know what kind of student they accept so they will look at your personal profile and score it Volunteer work Extra-curricular activities clubs - both in and out of school activities and interests beyond school work experience leadership activities accomplishments talents ( multiple languages, musical instruments, gymnastics, athletics, etc.) A student with an 88% average may be admitted over a student with a 90% average if their personal profile score is higher or they have a higher score in a subject closely related to the field of study GPA A GPA is a grade point average. The United States and Canada have different bereakdown methods when they calculate GPA. Refer to the chart below to see how they are different. In the United States they look at marks from grades 9 to 12. In Canada, they look at marks in grades 10 to 12. Both countries put more emphasis on the grade 11 and grade 12 marks. The GPA is most States and Provinces are calculated on a 4 point basis.

Graduation Transition 12-4 Credits This course is a course that all students must take to be eligible to graduate. It is a course that requires the students to do all of the above activities, keep a record of what they are doing and then make a presentation to members of the school staff and sometimes parents about their learning and their plans and how they are going to achieve their goals. The students need to keep a record of their volunteer hours, their work experience hours, the schools and programs they have researched for post secondary education and how they plan to stay healthy in the future. Many of the things that must be completed for this course are done independently by the students as each student has different goals, and experiences. As their supervisor for this course Miss E.T. will meet with the students throughout the year to ensure that they are on track. We will meet between Mid October and January more often as this is the time that the students have many more questions about University Applications. Students are encouraged to meet with Miss E.T. or Mr. Daneault to ask questions and get any help they may need. Throughout this process it is important to know that we will spend time with the students individually to ensure that they are making realistic decisions related to their likes, dislikes, abilities, English skills and grades. First Year of University - the Realities The first year of university tends to be a year of adjustments for the students as they move from a small caring environment to a larger, facility where the professors and employees do not know them and they are only one of hundreds. Grades tend to fall and students may experience difficulties in adapting. It is important to make connections with other students and faculty advisors during the first year. Although every student entering University plans to graduate, approximately 35% of first year students drop out their first year. About 80% are not sure what they really want to major in and 50% change their major at least once before they graduate. With these numbers so high, most universities offer general courses during the first year and then allow students to take more specialized courses in the second year. General courses tend to be related in the areas of study and include an English course. Acceptance into some specialty majors will depend on both their high school subjects and the marks earned in the general courses taken the first year.
