Gracing the stage for the performance are Kim Han, an up-and-coming clarinetist garnering attention all over the world, and the Hwaum Chamber Orchestra, back in Korea after a tour of six European countries this past summer. The assortment of tunes will include Tour 2012, a composition based on the traditional folk songs of six countries. The piece debuted during the European tour. Program D. 3 Exhibition VNA YONHAP-VNA: Joint Photo Exhibition 20 VNA Yonhap News and VNA, two leading news agencies in Korea and Vietnam, are coming together to stage a photo exhibition marking the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Taken by journalists over the two decades since relations began in December 1992, the pictures on display cover every area, from politics, diplomacy, and economic cooperation to cultural exchange, sports, and tourism. 4 Postscript Highlights DETOUR ASIA DETOUR ASIA was on view from Nov. 5 to 24 presenting works of architecture and art placed along the National Tourism Routes in Norway that wind their way through Norway s magnificent natural scenery. Norwegian tradition of adapting buildings to rough environments was refined as viewing platforms, rest areas, and service facilities. The exhibition was well received among architectural and design professionals and students. A curator s talk was given on Nov. 6 by Ellen Margrethe Skilnand of Norsk Form Foundation for Design and Architecture in Norway, who put together the exhibition. An architect s talk was held on Nov. 12 by Reiulf Ramstad, the architect who designed the Trollstigen viewing platform, which is one of the exhibition s centerpieces. On Nov. 22, professor Kim Hyon-Sob from Korea University gave a lecture on modern Scandinavian architecture. The exhibition was about the realization of the harmony between humankind and nature through Norwegian architecture. ARTS Concert: Acoustic Arts, Visual Music KF Gallery Open Stage Gallery Open Stage11 28 The ARTS Concert, the last Gallery Open Stage event of 2012, took place on Nov. 28. It was a special occasion with concertmaster Yoon Woon-jung s explanation on familiar artworks like Sin Yun-bok s Midnight Rendezvous and Edouard Manet s Luncheon on the Grass while the audience enjoyed performances of associated pieces of music.

5 2012 Korea Festival in Brazil Happy Together Korea Festival The Korea Foundation staged a 2012 Korea Festival in Brazil to boost the Korean Wave surging in Latin America s biggest country and celebrate 50 years of Korean immigration to Brazil. The festival, which featured a wide assortment of Korean culture in the form of an exhibition, performances, a film festival, and a special lecture series and roundtable, took place from Aug. 15 to Nov. 25 in four Brazilian cities: Brasília, São Paulo, Porto Alegre, Recife. The special exhibition, titled The Diverse Spectrum: 600 Years of Korean Ceramics, was presented at the São Paulo Museum of Art from August to November. A lavish opening ceremony was held on Nov. 7 at the Sala Martins Pena in the Teatro Nacional of Brasília. The Korean Chamber Orchestra drew a standing ovation with performances of Piazzolla, Sarasate, and Tchaikovsky, with violinist Soyoung Yoon s solo playing drawing particular notice. Other performances offered a blend of traditional and modern, including music by GongMyoung, a fusion percussion group, a performance by NANTA, and the puppet show Dallae s Story. Meanwhile, the University of São Paulo and the University of Brasília organized a special lecture series and roundtable on Korea, helping to promote Korean-Brazilian exchange not just in culture but in the areas of politics, the economy, and society.

Q For most people, December 25 is Christmas Day, but there are countries that celebrate Christmas on January 7. What is the largest country by both area and population in Europe among these countries, and why does it celebrate Christmas differently? The students of Aloysius Elementary School were treated to an encounter with Russia and China this past Oct. 20. Chinese volunteer Yang Yan sang Happy Birthday with the students in Chinese and shared a Chinese currency game. Russian volunteers Denis and Kostya brought some handmade blin (Russian pancakes) and took part in a quiz challenge and pryatki (Russian-style hide-andseek). Hanbeon vs. Han Beon Sometime / One Time Have you ever heard someone say Najung-e hanbeon bwayo ( See you again sometime ) or Eonje hanbeon mannaja ( Let s get together sometime )? Hanbeon literally translates as one time, and some of you may be asking why someone would suggest getting together just one time as opposed to, say, two times. But in this case, hanbeon refers to when we get the opportunity rather than the number of encounters. Similarly, when you go shopping and the salesperson says Hanbeon ibeo boseyo ( Try it on ) or Hanbeon gugyeonghae boseyo ( Have a look around ), the hanbeon here means to give something a try. On the other hand, if you say Jeoneun Hanguk yeonghwareul han beon bon jeogi isseoyo ( I saw a Korean film once ), the han beon does in fact refer to the number of times, and must be written with a space in between. by Kim Yun-jin

Kicking off with a round of free hugs (which have become something of a trademark for the sessions), it lasted two and a half hours and included introductions to the network and the activities of the teams as well as a Q&A session. The atmosphere was especially warm this time, and we look forward to great things from the graduating class. KFVNby Kim Mi-yeon Korean Culture Class A Day at Bukchon Hanok Village The Korean Culture Class visited Bukchon Hanok Village on Oct. 27 for an experience with natural dyes. Students learned about natural dyeing at the Bukchon home of Maeng Saseong, teacher of King Sejong the Great, and made their own one-of-a-kind handkerchiefs. They spent a quiet, rainy day in the village.
