The vast majority of scholarly journals are now online, and there have been a number of studies of what features scholars find most valuable in e- journals. Seamless linking to and from citations, the original articles cited, and bibliographic databases always ranks extremely highly. DOI and CrossRef provide an increasingly flexible way of enriching scholarly literature online with actionable and persistent links. -- Sally Morris, Chief Executive of the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers

Supplementary Material can be made available by the publisher as online-only content, linked to the online article. Definition: Supporting material that cannot be included in the printed version for reasons of space, and that is not essential for inclusion in the full text of the manuscript, but would nevertheless benefit the reader. It should not be essential to understanding the conclusions of the paper, but should contain data that is additional or complementary and directly relevant to the article content. Examples: More detailed methods, extended data sets/data analysis, tables, or additional figures (including colour). Oxford Journals
