This book examines the research conducted on urban ethnography by the National Folk Museum of Korea. Although most people in Korea live in urban or suburban settings, the study of folklore has mainly focused on the traditional culture in rural areas. Under these circumstances, the National Folk Museum of Korea launched this research with the aim to record contemporary life and culture in Korea. The research was conducted on Jeongleung 3- dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. This book is composed of two volumes. The first volume introduces life stories and various customs of residents in Jeongleung 3-dong, and the history of Jeongleung. Additionally, it includes the ideology of students who attend local university. The second volume focuses on material culture. It takes a close look at and introduces all the objects
in a selected household. The report contains detailed information on every object including how each item was purchased, collected and managed, and discusses the social relation and history of an individual object. This type of research not only shows slices of Korean life and culture, but also provides a clear insight into the way of life and mentality of modern-contemporary Koreans. In addition, this book offers valuable references based on which both future and contemporary Koreans can critique and review their life and ideology. The National Folk Museum of Korea will conduct research on urban ethnography in Dal-dong, Ulsan, Kyoungsang Nam-Do after finishing its work in Seoul. The research is expected to present more vivid images of Korean life and culture in local settings compared to that conducted in the capital of Korea.
