Welcome to DGIST 인사말 입학생 여러분, 세계 초일류 융복합 연구중심대학을 지향하는 DGIST에 입학하신 것을 진심 으로 환영합니다. DGIST는 지식창조형 글로벌 인재양성과 미래 융복합기술 창출이라는 목표를 추구하는 연구중심 대학으로서, KAIST 및 GIST와 더불어 국가에서 출연하여 설립한 과학기술계 특수대학 이라는 면에서는 동일하나, 학교와 더불어 연구원을 함께 가지고 있다는 것이 DGIST만의 특징입니다. 따라서 여러분은 학교에서 배운 기초 원천기술을 연구원에서 응용 상용기술화 하는 모든 과정을 경험하 는 매우 독창적인 교육과정을 거쳐 국가가 필요로 하는 글로벌 실용화 리더로 성장하게 될 것입니다. Despite this similarity with KAIST and GIST, DGIST is very unique in its structure: the nation s sole organization composed of university and research institute with a vision to be a worldleading convergence-research university. Therefore you will have chances to grow into a global leader through our distinguished system, which enables for you to work on applied research and commercialization of technologies you learned and developed during your degree programs focused on basic and fundamental research. DGIST will make a history. It is the Miracle of Han River for Korea to become one of developed countries from war-torn poorest country over the last half century, and the miracle originated from the science technology industrial complex in Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. In the 21st knowledge-based society, we need another miracle to develop Korea into a world-leading nation, and you will play an important role in here. I hope that you spread your wings of creativity at DGIST with responsibility and pride as heros and heroins of the miracle. You might face with various obstacles in the way to realize your dream. Fail : If a student receives a grade of F or U, the student s work in the course has been failing. Students terminated from military service must submit the notice of termination and return to school. This applies only within 1/4 of semester days. The leave of absence cannot be withdrawn if 1/4 of the semester has been completed. Student Support IT on Campus 웹메일 사용방법 본교의 메일시스템은 웹 기반 시스템으로 기본적인 웹메일 서비스를 제공 메일박스 저장용량은 기본 2GB, 개인자료실은 1G를 제공 시스템 접속 URL : http://mail.dgist.ac.kr/ 외부메일(아웃룩) 설정 방법 웹메일시스템은 아웃룩 및 스마트폰으로도 사용 가능. 지원하는 계정유형은 POP3, IMAP를 지원하며, 수신 메일서버와 발신 메일서버(SMTP)는 mail.dgist.ac.kr 로 동일함. 아웃룩에서는 기타설정 > 보내는 메일서버에서 보내는 메일서버(SMTP)인증 필요에 체크해야 메일 발송이 가능. 기타설정 > 고급에서 서버에 메시지 복사본 저장을 체크하면, pop3로 메일을 수신할 때 서버에 메일을 삭제하지 않고 저장해 둘 수 있음. 50

Students can use e-mail service on Student Portal System. Students can set up a link with Outlook Express (external mail address) Based on the POP3 protocol, web mail is accessible via Outlook Express and via a smart phone. Types of account available: POP3, IMAP The receiving account server and the outgoing account server (SMTP) are the same: mail.dgist. ac.kr Check Need Certification for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) when setting up Outlook Express. Off - Campus Life 주변 관광 명소(Getting Around) Daegu Metroplitan City The City of Daegu, located inland, in the southeast of the Korean Peninsula, is the third biggest city in Korea. The city is conveniently located four driving hours by car or two hours away by express train from Seoul, the capital city. It also takes one and a half hours from Busan which is adjacent to the ocean. Daegu is also surrounded by small cities and towns which have numerous historical and cultural sites. People can also reach many beautiful beaches on the East Sea which are only two driving hours away. As of the end of December 2011, Daegu has a population of around 2.5 million. The weather in Daegu is especially hot and humid in summer and cold in winter, but you can enjoy yourself in the warm, clear weather of both spring and fall. Biseul (6.2km DGIST) Biseulsan (Mt. The greatest feature of Biseulsan (Mt.) is the balance between a natural resting space and convenient facilities. Rock fields which has a stock of house-sized rocks in an area of 500~3,000 pyeong as well as unusual rocks hidden inside various places in the valleys are admirable sights. This mountain offers good trekking courses. Since it is located on the outskirts of the Daegu area, it is loved for family gatherings. There are also many visitors from other areas. Chamkkot (flower) in spring, Angaegyegok (Valley) in summer, maples and eulalias in autumn and icy hills in winter... all await visitors to this area. 86

Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science & Technology Yugasa Temple (4.6km DGIST) Yugasa Temple, located deep in the valley of Mt. Biseul, was founded by a Buddhist teacher Doseongguksa in 827 AD. There are a lot of folk tales related to Doseongguksa in Mt. Biseul. This temple is a good place for meditation due to its quietness. Various shapes of peaks and rock cliffs surround the temple like a screen and give a serene beauty. A bit farther upward, Sudoam Hermitage and Doseongam Hermitage are stationed. Behind the Doseongam Hermitage is Dotongbawi Rock on which Doseongguksa is said to have won heavenly wisdom. Dodong Seowon (Treasure No. 350, 7.7km DGIST) Historically, Seowon, or Confucian Academy had been an institute to teach students Confucian ideology, that was the ruling ideology in the Joseon dynasty. Dodong Seowon was the place where people pay a respectful service to Gweng-pil Kim, built in Mt. Biseul, Hyeonpung in 1568. Back then, it was called Sange Seowon, but it was burned down during Imjinweran, the war between Japan and Korea. In 1605, it moved to the present place and was named Borodong Seowon, which was changed to Dodong Seowon in 1607. During the reign of Daewongun, the father of King Gojong, at the late 19th century, almost all the Seowons were forced to be closed and only 47 remained intact including this Seowon with the help of scholars and his posterity s protection, and Dodong Seowon was one of them intacted. There are a shrine, auditorium and Suwolru in the front yard. The Shrine is placed on furniture-like stairs with several doors in the front. The wall, made of Giwa (traditional Korean tile) is remarkable in that it is the one single treasure of its kind in the nation whose door is also specially structured. The 87

Dodong Seowon is well known for its beautiful scenery in the Dalseong-gun District, with a 400-yearold gingko tree standing in the yard. Address: 35 Dodongri, Guji-myeon, Dalseong-gun, Daegu Mt. Palgong Provincial Park (41km DGIST) Palgonsan is a famous mountain in Daegu reaching heights of 1,192 meters. Several streams and valleys have been developed in the mountain such as Munamcheon (Stream) in the south and Hancheon (Stream), Namcheon (Stream) and Sinnyeongchoen (Stream) in the north and the east. Among them, especially Sutaegol (Valley) and Chisangyegok (Valley) of Sudosa (Temple) with deep valleys and thick forests are famous. At the foot of the mountain, temples are found here and there, such as Eunhaesa (Temple), the headquarter of 10th parish of Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, Donghwasa (Temple), Pagyesa (Temple), and Buinsa (Temple). There are also cultural properties such as Gunwisamjonseokgul (Cave, 軍威三尊石窟: National Treasure No.109) and Gwanbong sedentary statue of stone Buddha (冠峰石造如來坐像: Treasure No.431). There are many fantastic rocks and valleys. Azaleas and rhododendron indicums in full blossom in spring, thick forests and clean waters in summer and the most beautiful fall tints along the belt highway creates fantastic scenery in fall and snow-covered sceneries harmonize with snowflakes in winter. Palgongsan, abundant with its attractions, is the top of the noted mountains attracting tourists all year round. 88

Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science & Technology Donghwa-sa (Temple) and Zen Buddhism Experience Center (39km DGIST) Donghwa-sa is a temple located at the southern edge of Mt. Palgong in Daegu. The name Donghwasa means that the empress trees, which surround the temple, remain in bloom all year-round. Donghwa-sa underwent extensive reconstruction, and most of the present buildings were constructed during the reign of King Yeongjo (1725~1776). A Zen Buddhism experience center has been established at Donghwa-sa, famed for containing the world s largest stone statue of Buddha (tongil-yaksa-yeorae-daebul), to provide the nation s only cultural tourism resource based on Zen Buddhism. It aims to reestablish the history and spirit of Korean Zen Buddhism and widely disseminate the Ganhwaseon Zen practice, which is the essence of Eastern spiritual culture. Hahoi Village (93km DGIST) This is one of the most famous tourist destinations around the Andong area for its well-preserved traditional culture. In this place, however, the cultural heritage is not all that remains intact. The residents of the village maintain the old-fashioned ways of life, including the traditional schools they attend. Many do not even have their hair cut, just like the people of old. Bulguk-sa (Temple) (80km DGIST) Located in Mt. Toham, Gyungju. This temple is at the peak of the Buddhism culture of Shinra kingdom, and it was built with a hope to protect the country by the power of Buddha. It also reflect the architectural heritage of Shinra. Founded in 535 AD by King Bupheung, but later expanded further by the prime minister Kim Dae Sung during the days of King Kyungduk to make it what it is now. There are debates over the exact founding date of this temple. In Samgukyusa, one of the main stream history record book of those days, it is said that Kim Dae Sung himself was responsible for the foundation of the temple in 751 AD. But in Bulgosageumchanggi, it is recorded that the temple was built in 528 AD and one of the students 89

It was also said that the size of the premise was the biggest among the temple even in Shinra age, with more than 2000 pillars and 60 buildings in total. The temple was burnt to the ground during Imjinwaeran (Japanese invasion of Chosun) in 1592 leaving only the stone Buddha and some facilities in stones. Later, the temple was rebuilt to its complete shape, with further restoration of Musuljeon, Gwanumjeon, Birojeon, Kyungru, Hoerang after the excavation in 1969 and the by the restoration works in 1973. The temple is divided in three sectors, each of which means the ideal world in Buddhism, Pian. Daeungjeon, the main pavilion with the Buddha statue, Geukrakjeon which symbolizes the paradise in Buddhism, and Birojeon that stands for the world of Birojana are in perfect harmony. Seokgulam, the famous stone Buddha which shows the zest of Shinra culture is 3 km away (9km by the paved access road). The stone Buddha has been designated as a World s Cultural Heritage along with other national treasures in 1995, contributing to spread the beauty of Korea all over the world. Woopo Wetland (18km DGIST) http://www.upo.or.kr Upo Wetland (includes Upo, Mokpo, Sajipo and Jokjibul) is the biggest natural continent wetland in Korea. In July of 1997, it was designated as Ecological Conservation Area by the Ministry of Environment. In March of 1998, it was registered to Ramsar Convention and is being protected. The area that is designated for ecosystem and view preservation is about 8.54km 2 and the area covered by water in Upo Wetland is about 2.314km 2. Many animals and plants live in the vast wetland of 231ha that is spread over Jumaeri Daehabmyun, Ahri Ebangmyung and Daedaeri and Sejinri Youeomyung of Changyounggun. Through the destruction of ecosystem is in progress due to the recent development, Upo Wetland still embraces lives. Opening its heart not only to animals and plants but also to people, Upo Wetland makes people that they are a part of the nature. Rice accompanies almost every meal consists of a variety of vegetable and meat dishes. Korean food is generally considered to be healthy and light; the following is a list of quintessential Korean dishes: Kimchi Cabbages and other vegetables are soaked in salt water, then seasoned with different spices before being fermented. There are many different type of kimchi, such as cabbage kimchi [the most common], cucumber kimchi, radish kimchi, cubed radish kimchi, green onion kimchi, and more. It is a health food filled with vitamins, minerals, and more. Bibimbap [Boiled rice mixed with vegetables] A dish made by mixing rice with various other cooked vegetables. Great for experiencing different vegetables, pleasing to the eye, and full of nutrients. Jeonju s variation of bibimbap is most famous. Bulgogi [Marinated, barbecued beef] Beef or pork is sliced thinly then marinated in seasoning before being grilled. Samgyetang [Chicken soup] A young chicken is cleaned out then stuffed with various ingredients before being boiled to draw out a delicious broth. Kimchi jjigae [Kimchi stew] First the pork is browned in the bottom of the pot before water and kimchi are added. If sour kimchi is used, it makes a better tasting stew. Tteokbokki Rice powder is steamed and mad into a long cylinder-shaped rice cake called garaetteok. It is cut into finger size pieces and cooked in a spicy and sweet sauce. Meat, vegetables or ramyeon can be added depending on different tastes. Tteokbokki, along with gimbap and odaeng [skewered fish cake], is one of the most common foods sold by street vendors. 91

Off - Campus Life Korean Culture National Holidays 1. 2013 Official Korean Holidays New Year s Day (January 1) As in other countries, the first day of the New Year is celebrated. Seollal (February 9-11, 2013) Lunar New Year s Day (Seollal) is one of the most important traditional holidays of the year; the holiday is much more significant than January 1st. Most businesses are closed, and people take several days off from work to visit their hometowns to be with their family. On the day of Seollal, everyone gets up early, puts on their best clothes, and bows to their elders as a reaffirmation of family ties. Feasts are held with specially prepared food such as Ttokguk and Manduguk. Independence Movement Day (March 1) This day commemorates the Declaration of Independence proclaimed on March 1, 1919, while under Japanese colonization. A reading of the declaration takes place in a special ceremony at Tapgol Park in Seoul, where the document was first read to the public. Children s Day (May 5) On this day, parents dress up their little ones and take them to children s parks, amusement parks, zoos, or to the cinema for a full day of fun and games. Buddha s Birthday (May 17, 2013) The 8th day of the 4th lunar month. Elaborate, solemn rituals are held at many Buddhist temples across the country and lanterns are hung in the temple courtyards. The Sunday before Buddha s birthday these lanterns are lit and carried in parades in the evening. Memorial Day (June 6) Memorial Day is set aside to honor the soldiers and civilians who have given their lives for their country. The largest ceremony is held at the National Cemetery in Seoul. Liberation Day (August 15) This day commemorates the liberation of Korea in 1945 from Japanese colonial rule. Chuseok (September 18-20, 2013) Chuseok is one of the year s most important traditional holidays. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. National Foundation Day (October 3) This day commemorates the founding of the Korean nation in 2333 B.C. by the legendary god-king Dangun. A simple ceremony is held at an altar on top of Mt. Manisan in Ganghwado Province. The altar is said to have been erected by Dangun to offer thanks to his father and grandfather in heaven. Hangeul Day (October 9) Hangeul Day, otherwise referred to as Hangeul Proclamation Day or Korean Alphabet Day, is a commemoration held on October 9th in South Korea to remember the creation of Hangeul, the country s native alphabet as proclaimed by the publication of Hunmin Jeongeum on this day in 1446. Christmas (December 25) Christmas is observed as a national holiday in Korea as in many other countries. 2. Special Days Labor Day (May 1) Although Labor Day is not a national holiday, banks and business establishments are closed, and many people enjoy a day off. Summer The hot months of summer last from June to early September. Half of the annual rainfall occurs during the monsoon season from late June to early July. Mid-July through mid-august is the hottest period and the most popular time for Koreans to go on vacation. Autumn Lasting from September through November, the mild days of fall make it the most pleasant time of the year. The temperature varies greatly from day to night. The mountains, when blanketed with vivid golden and red autumnal leaves under the clear blue sky, are breathtaking. Winter Winter lasts from December to mid-march.
