Its varied landscapes of mighty rivers, spectacular waterfalls, deep gorges and sweeping plains host some of the world s most unique species of fauna and flora. Kingdom of the Heavens Snaking its way through the savannahs and rainforests of the highlands, the Kukenán River gives birth to the country s second most important waterway, the Caroní. Its source is the Kukenán Falls on the homonymous tepui, which reaches a height of over 2,680m above sea level. To the east sits its better-known sister tepui, the majestic Mount Roraima. The indigenous Pemon people have long revered these mountaintops, believing the tepuis to be dwellings of their gods. c Last Refuge / Getty Images / Multibits Image
Veil of Mystery Often enveloped in a cloud of mist, signaling the cloud forest ahead, the summit of Mount Roraima soars into the sky springing off steep rock ledges. At 2,810m high and 8km across, it is the highest of the tepui range. It has been a place shrouded in legends, and its landscape served as inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle s novel The Lost World. It acts as a natural border between Venezuela, Guyana and neighbouring Brazil. c Martin Harvey / Corbis / Topic Images

Life on the Plateau Heavy year-round rainfalls make Mount Roraima one of the wettest places on earth. Numerous plants, such as the endemic carnivorous marsh pitchers and sundews, have adapted to the boggy terrain lacking in nutrients by supplementing their mineral uptake with the flesh of insects. Tiny Pebble Toads measuring just an inch escape predators by turning themselves into rubbery balls and bouncing off the jagged rocks.

Natural Skyscrapers Abundant precipitation causes torrents to form and spill over the edge of the plateaus, giving rise to some of the world s most dramatic waterfalls. The Auyán Tepui in the Canaima National Park is the source of Angel Falls, the world s highest waterfall. Cascading from a formidable height of 979m, the water has mostly evaporated or been carried away as mist by the time it reaches the foot of the mountain. Among the national park s tepuis is the tear-shaped Akopán Tepui, which forms part of the Chimantá Massif, the largest formation of plateaus in the country.
그란사바나에는 100개가넘는테푸이산이있지만, 사람이탐험한곳은그중절반도되지않는다. c Martin Harvey / Corbis / Topic Images Awesome Evolution The Gran Sabana s harshly beautiful sandstone formations are the result of a geological process of erosion that has lasted millions of years. The tepuis date back to the Precambrian period over 1.5 billion years ago, when a sedimentary layer of sandstone formed, ultimately eroding and fracturing over millions of years. The area is home to over one hundred tepuis, yet to this day less than half have been explored.

Canaima National Park There are direct flights from Atlanta to Caracas, Venezuela s capital, and then on to Ciudad Bolívar. From here small propeller planes make the one-hour flight to Canaima village. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Canaima National Park occupies an area of over 30,000 sqkm, and is about 65% covered by table mountain formations. The flight over Canaima National Park is worth the trip alone: Meandering rivers flow through lush verdant jungle, with sporadic stray wooden huts precariously lodged along the banks. The park is home to roughly 20,000 Pemon Indians, who, to this day, maintain traditional lifestyles as huntergatherers and ancient methods of agriculture. Many produce beautiful traditional artifacts, which can be purchased at shops in the town of Canaima. Kukenán Tepui The colossal Kukenán Tepui has long been both revered and feared by the Pemon people, who claim otherworldly phenomena have taken place in this arcane enclave. To this day it remains mostly 쿠케난테푸이 Kukenán Tepui unexplored, mainly due to its largely inaccessible summit, with cracks and rocky mazes flanked by sheer cliffs. The southernmost tip of the tepui is the origin of the country s second-tallest waterfall, the Kukenán Falls, which plummets from a height of 674m. Auyan tepui The 700sqm heart-shaped Auyan Tepui is the largest formation of the Guiana Highlands and is among its most renowned, giving rise to the acclaimed Angel Falls. The tepui gained worldwide fame when American gold-hunting adventurer and pilot Jimmie Angel accidentally discovered the falls, which were subsequently named after him. The precise story as to how or why Jimmie Angel landed on the Auyan Tepui remains unclear, although most accounts point towards a hunt for gold, which ultimately led to a heavy landing that left him and his passengers stranded on the peak. 자세한문의는으로문의바랍니다.
