5 Planned Performances In 2017, Daegu Opera House played a repertoire of popular operas on a seasonal basis and met audiences with a balanced mix of various programs such as lecture operas, concerts, and ballet. Daegu Opera House presented opera <Die Zauberflöte> and <Hänsel und Gretel>, a funny adaptation using Korean language for children and their families, the opera <Turandot> with various events combining summer and imagery, and the operetta <Die fledermaus> with a local TV star in a cameo. In addition, Daegu Opera House also showed the lecture opera <Il trittico> with commentary on Puccini's three one-act operas, a concert which was composed of diverse genres of music in celebration of Daegu being selected as a creative city of music by UNESCO, as well as small and big performances for the twelve months of In addition, it was a year with active overseas exchanges as Daegu Opera House entered the Japanese market with its own opera <La Bohème>, produced in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the sisterhood relationship between Daegu and Hiroshima, which received praise from audiences.

16 Training project for the young musicians Gianni Tangucci In 2017, Daegu Opera House expanded the project for new singers with the major programs singer upbringing program in spring and Daegu International Opera Festival in autumn. First of all, we gave students and young singers an experience on the opera stage of a large theater by inviting international students from five countries, Austria, China, Italy, the USA, and Germany, to a festival including 'Opera Universiade' <Così fan tutte> and Young artist opera <La Bohème> for young singers who were younger than 35 years old and active in the local area. We also conducted a master class for Gianni Tangucci, director of Young Artist of Firenze Theater Academy in Italy, and various programs such as auditioning for overseas theaters, which gave local singers the opportunity to study at the Firenze Theater in Italy and Opernstudio of Hamburg Theater in Germany, and the 2017 Debut Concert, which included many professional singers active both domestically and internationally. In addition, by lowering the admission fee for performances related to young artists, the local residents were provided with the performances at low prices.

22 15 th Daegu International Opera Festival The 15th Daegu International Opera Festival was held for a month under the theme of 'Opera & Human'. The festival opened with <Rigoletto> with Julian Kovatchev, the conductor of the Daegu City Symphony Orchestra, who is an active opera conductor in Europe. It was his first time conducting in Daegu. The festival consisted of 4 main operas including <Il Trittico>, three one-act operas of Puccini, <Aida>, a large-scale opera with the citizens' choir, and <Immortal Love>, the first creative opera broadcast on Naver. In addition, concert type opera concertantes such as <Der Fliegende Holländer> and <Die Fledermaus>, which cooperated with major theaters in Germany and Austria, were performed with a high level of performance on weekdays where there was no main opera. Various events were held such as four mini-theater operas performed in various parts of Daegu outside the theater, the Pavarotti 10th anniversary concert which gathered attention with the visit of world famous soprano Angela Gheorghiu, and 'Opera Odyssey', an opera class inviting famous critics. As a result, the 15th Festival recorded the highest(a) rating in the regional representative performing arts festival evaluation, leaving a record of receiving love from both reviewers and audiences.

35 Opera Academy & Opera Popularization Program Daegu Opera House, which has been operated as a single building since its opening in 2003, opened an annex building by renovating the dormitory in Samsung Creation Campus in June The PR hall Located at the front of the annex building is an archiving facility that collects and archives key materials related to the local opera as well as the Daegu Opera House. At the PR hall, citizens can collect a variety of information about the performances and purchase tickets as well as the art products that Daegu Opera House created. They can also check the actual state of the performances. As the annex building of Daegu Opera House has opened, it is now possible to operate an opera-related art academy more systematically for citizens, children, and vocal music students. In addition, there were various programs which could not be presented in a large theater that were performed at the 'Camerata', a small theater of 90 seats on the second floor of the building, such as lecture operas and small concerts, that received good reviews. There were also a lot of concerts at the schools, hospitals, and plazas where people gather, expanding the base of opera and attracting audiences.

42 Daegu International Opera Orchestra The DIO Orchestra(Daegu International Opera Orchestra) is composed mainly of musicians who are committed to sociocultural opera, the popularization of classical music, and who are young, experienced, competent, and have studied overseas. The DIO Orchestra was founded as an opera orchestra different from existing music groups and has a wide range of opera repertoire from classical to contemporary works. It is an orchestra with the highest professionalism and plans to further develop its capabilities for the future of Korean opera as well as to promote local performing arts culture. In addition, it will provide quality cultural services to the underprivileged through the combination of various contents (tango, ballet, waltz, etc.) that the public can relate to, and will endeavor to contribute to expansion and popularization of classical and opera. Metropolitan Opera Choir The Metropolitan Opera Choir, a choir of Daegu Opera House, is a professional organization founded on the passion and enthusiasm of young singers active in Daegu, a center of performing arts. After its foundation in 2017, beginning with <Die Zauberflöte>, a family opera at Daegu Opera House, they appeared in various operas such as <Turandot>, the Daegu International Opera Festival s <Rigoletto>, <Aida> and <Immortal Love>. Their powerful and intense performances led to praise from reviewers and audience members alike. 46 The Architecture The Lobby The Auditorium With the tight yet gentle curves in the roof, the beautifully curving walls and the seats arranged in a horseshoe shape, the Daegu Opera House is an iconic building that represents the sophistication of the 21st century architectural style. The Daegu Opera House is a perforance hall that meets the acoustic and visual requirements of comprehensive art forms such as the opera, and makes it possible to present musicals, ballet, dance and theatrical productions through efficient operation and management of the building spaces and stage devices. Although the lobby isn't large, the spacial constraints are not apparent because of the high veiling and walls that reach up to the fourth floor and the striking view of the outside and the space rather seems cozy. Daegu Opera House can accommodate a total of 1,508 people on the first through fourth floor and in the orchesta pit. The seats were arrange in a horseshoe shape, witch is the classical theaters in Europe, with a modern twist. Every seat in Daegu Opera House, designed to have the essential conditions that world maximize the audience's enjoyment, is located no farther than 35m away from the stage to ensure that ever person in the audience can clearly here the sound of the actor's voices and see their faces. 47 Stage Sound System Daegu Opera House is equipped with a 1,485m 2 stage facility, which is suitable for operas and other performing arts. There are side (left and right) stages and the backstage in addition to the main stage to facilitate stage transitions, while 10backdrop curtains allow a display of various settings. In addition, there is a background curtain, lighting equipment and lift devices on the stage floor. Daegu Opera House, which is a proscenium theater, separates the audience and the stage with a proscenium arch. The size of the proscenium is 10.5m 15m, while each of the side stages and the backstage re equipped with 9 auxiliary stage sets and 4 mobile stages. The orchestra pit can hold p to 110 people in up to a maximum of 4 orchestra sections depending on the scale of the performance and the type of music being palyed. Moreover, the size of the pit can also be altered to expand the stage or to add more seats whenever necessary. Daegu Opera House Paid an extra careful attention to the acoustics. Living up to the reputation as a venue for large-scale performances of various genres, it uses topnotch acoustic equipment with careful considerations to satisfy those with sensitive ears. The size of the hall and the seating(w:25m L:34m H:15.48m) at Daegu Opera House are appropriate to provide optimum, acoustics. With the application of architectural acoustic design suitable for a performance hall accommodating 1,508 people, the people in the back and the balconies on both sides are able to enjoy rich sounds as well. It has been designed to have 1.2 to 1.6 seconds of reverberation and only 0.02-sec difference between direct and indirect sounds without any resonance effect. Also, 48 roll screens were installed in the ceiling dome to adjust sound absorption and reflection rate depending on the type of performance and intention of the producers, and sound absorption curtains have been placed on the system to create the necessary sound effects for operas, musicals and plays, exert precise control of the acoustics and record and/or play sounds. In addition, and apron screen and front speakers have been installed in the front of the stage for the audience

48 Lighting Rehearsal Room Dressing Room Lighting is essential when it comes to performing arts. Lights placed atop, below, and in front of a stage can be used in combination to create the desired visual effect and can be expanded or reduced in accordance with nature of the play being staged. In addition to the stage lights, the lights inside and outside the building were designed to have a refined and classy appearance to suit the venue, and accentuate the architectural characteristics and nature of the venue, taking into account the fact that it is mostly used in the evening and nighttime. Also, high definition video can be projected on to the 600" big screen using a beam projector from behind, and a projector and a screen for subtitles have also been installed to help the audience understand the particular opera or performance they are watching. The Daegu Opera House houses a total of 5 rehearsal rooms : 1 large rehearsal room(68.1 pyeong), 1 medium-sized rehearsal room(52.3 pyeong), and 3 small rehearsal room (22.5 pyeong) to assure enough rehearsal spaces for various genres including opera, ballet and chorus. In particular, the large rehearsal room is situated on the 3rd floor of the building with a great natural light and ventilationl. There are 5 individual dressing rooms (23.5 pyeong) and 2 regular dressing rooms (67 pyeong) for the lead actors, and 2 dreesing rooms for ihe support cast (46 pyeong). The individual dressing rooms are equipped with a shower stall, closet and piano to ensure that the cast members can prepare for their performances in their best conditions
