2 꿈과 열정이 숨쉬는 대학, 지스트 작은 꿈을 소중히 여기는 소수정예 철학으로 창의적 과학기술 인재를 키웁니다 GIST, an institute full of dreams and passion With a philosophy of nurturing a select few students and their dreams, GIST aims to foster the next generation of scientists 지스트는 처음부터 특별했다. 설립 당시 소수정예 과학기술 인재를 양성하는 대학원 중심의 국내 교육 연구기관은 지스트가 유일했다. 적은 수의 교수 학생이 밀도 높은 교육 연구 활동을 통해 세계 최고 수준의 연구 성과를 창출하겠다는 소수정예 의 철학은 지스트의 가장 중요한 특징이다. 교원 20명, 석사과정 학생 113명에 정보통신공학과 신소재공학과 기전공학과 환경 공학과 생명과학과 등 5개 학과로 출범한 지스트는 개원 초기부터 모든 강의를 영어로 진행 했고, 신임 교원에게는 영어강의 능력을 반드시 요구했다. 2001년에는 국내 최초로 박사과정 졸업논문에 대해 해외 대학 교수들의 심사를 받는 박 사학위논문 해외 인증제 를 도입했다. 해외 유명 대학의 박사학위 논문과 비교해 뒤지지 않는 수준의 학위논문을 작성하게 하려는 취지이다. 석 박사과정은 2010년 3월 기존 학과 체제를 학부 로 전환했으며, 지금은 물리 화학부 (물리 광과학과, 화학과)와 정보기전공학부, 나노바이오재료전자공학과, 의료시스템학과를 더한 총 7개 학부 4개 학과로 구성돼 있다. 학사과정의 경우 기존 대학원 과정과 차별화된 교육 커리큘럼과 인재상을 강조하기 위해 미국식 칼리지(College) 개념을 도입, 지스트대학(GIST College) 으로 이름 짓고 2010 학년도에 첫 신입생 100명을 선발했다. 지스트대학은 1~2학년의 기초교육학부와 3~4학년의 전공 과정(물리, 화학, 생물, 공학 응용과학 등, 3학년 진학 시 선택)으로 이루어져 있다. 공학 응용과학전공 학생의 경우 전기전산 기계공학 재료공학 지구환경공학 등 4개 트랙 중 하나를 선택한다. 지스트대학은 전공과목 100% 영어 강의, 토론식 소규모 수업, 인문 사회 예체능 교육 강화, 영어 학위논문 제출, 미국 Caltech과의 SURF(학부생 하계 연구 참여 프로그램) 교환학생 프로그램 및 G-SURF 등의 대학원 연구실 참여 기회 제공 등 이공계 대학 교육의 혁신 모델로 주목받고 있다. 화보집 두 번째 장인 Dynamic GIST, 꿈을 펼치다 에서는 지스트의 교육 및 학생 활동과 관련한 사진을 수록했다. 입학설명회부터 학위수여식까지 학생들이 지스트와 인연을 맺고 함께 성장해 가는 과정을 순서대로 담았다. GIST was special from the start. When it was established, GIST was the only educational research institute in the nation led by a graduate school with the goal of nurturing a select few scientifically talented students. The philosophy of a select few is still GIST s guiding principle as it promotes intensive education and research activities with a small number of competent faculty and students in order to train world-class scientists. GIST began with 20 faculty members and 113 graduate students in 5 different departments: Information and Communications, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechatronics, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Life Sciences. GIST offered all of its classes in English and verified the ability of all new faculty members to teach classes in English. In 2001, in a program unique for Korea, GIST introduced its system of overseas certification of doctoral thesis to ensure that all doctoral theses submitted by students were reviewed by professors at overseas universities. The system was to ensure that all GIST graduates doctoral theses would be on par with those from prestigious colleges around the world. The MS and PhD programs were reorganized in March Currently there are seven schools and four departments including the School of Physics and Chemistry (Department of Physics and Photon Science, Department of Chemistry), School of Information and Mechatronics, Department of Nanobio Materials and Electronics, and Department of Medical System Engineering. GIST introduced the concept of an American style college to differentiate its curriculum and enhance its talent pool. GIST College initially accepted 100 students in The curriculum consists of a Liberal Arts and Sciences for first and second year students and four concentrations (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Engineering and Applied Science), which are chosen during the third year of their studies. For Engineering and Applied Science Concentration, students choose one of four tracks (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Earth and Environmental Engineering). GIST College is gaining attention for its innovative model of education, with all major-related courses and small group recitations taught in English, and also for its SURF (undergraduate student summer research program) exchange program with Caltech and intramural G-SURF program. GIST College strives to provide ever-increasing opportunities for students to participate in research while training well-rounded students versed in the humanities, social studies, the arts, and sports. 21 지스트에는 미국 독일 벨기에 중국 인도 말레이시아 태국 파키스탄 등 세계 각국에서 온 외국인 학생 100여 명이 공부하고 있다. 해마다 열리는 지스트 문화의 밤(GIST Culture Night) 은 지스트 유학생들의 본국 전통문화와 한국 문화를 동시에 즐길 수 있는 축제이다.
