About QNS The Center for Quantum Nanoscience (QNS) is a research center established by the Institute of Basic Science (IBS) in 2017, located at Ewha Womans

QNS will endeavor to fully understand and harness the properties of atoms and man-made atomic structures.

This will enable the use of such systems as high-sensitivity quantum sensors or qubits from quantum computing.

3 About QNS The Center for Quantum Nanoscience (QNS) is a research center established by the Institute of Basic Science (IBS) in 2017, located at Ewha Womans University in Korea. The vision of QNS is to lead the development of quantum nanoscience field and show its future. QNS will endeavor to fully understand and harness the properties of atoms and man-made atomic structures. QNS aims to assemble and control the quantum systems on at atomic scale to lay the foundation for future quantum technologies. This will enable the use of such systems as high-sensitivity quantum sensors or qubits from quantum computing. It may also offer a new route to solving computational problems that accrued as devices shrink to atomic scale. Pioneering researchers from around the world are gathering and QNS will become a global hub leading the field. Construction plan for QNS lab. 4 About QNS Director Andreas Heinrich Heinrich is a world-leading researcher in the field of atomic-scale science in solids. He pioneered spin excitation spectroscopy with scanning tunneling microscopes a method that has provided high-resolution access to the quantum states of atoms and nanostructures on surfaces. He spent 18 years in IBM Research uniquely positioning to bridge the needs of industrial research and the academic world. IBS was established with the vision of "Making Discoveries for Humanity & Society." IBS s most important task is to provide a stable environment that allows researchers to immerse themselves in creative research in order to expand the frontiers of scientific knowledge, which will greatly impact the development of our society.

With these tools we study the quantum properties of atoms on surfaces, with a particular focus on magnetic atoms supported on thin insulating films.

5 About QNS Research Projects Scanning Probe Microscopy of Magnetic Atoms on Surfaces This team is currently the largest research area of QNS. We strive to develop highresolution STM and AFM tools that rival the best in the world. With these tools we study the quantum properties of atoms on surfaces, with a particular focus on magnetic atoms supported on thin insulating films. Starting from the pioneering work by Heinrich and coworkers in 2004 [REF], some of us have found that the spin states can be measured with high precision [REF]. In addition, the STM can be used to move atoms and build tailored spin chains one atom at a time [REF]. The STM offers the unique opportunity to image materials with atomic resolution, position atoms with atomic-scale precision, and measure the resulting electronic and magnetic properties with high energy resolution. Ensemble-Averaging Measurements of Magnetic Atoms on Surfaces This team is pursuing a two-prong research agenda. Firstly, to follow the expertise of the PI to perform magnetic x-ray absorption studies at national synchrotron facilities around the world. Secondly, to develop a unique research tool, which will be able to measure electron spin resonance on atoms and molecules on clean surfaces. Theory of Quantum Systems at Surfaces The theory team at QNS will be set up to work closely with the experimental groups to understand, model, and predict the quantum properties of the studied systems. One part of the team will focus on first-principle modelling. As part of this effort, QNS will install a medium-sized high-performance computer cluster to host these compute intensive calculations. A second part will focus on understanding the interaction of the quantum systems with the local environment. These interactions often give rise to so-called decoherence: the irrecoverable loss of quantum information to the environment.

The QNS NV team operates in close collaboration with Prof LEE, Donghun from Korea University. Together, we are setting up a NV spectroscopy experiments combined with atomic force microscopy. Such a scanning NV approach will allow us to utilize the excellent quantum properties of the NV on the tip to investigate spin systems at or near surfaces. On the other hand, we are developing device characterization techniques to probe the quantum states of molecules and point defects in electronic devices. Optical Spectroscopy of Molecules Near Surfaces This team is interested in studying photophysical properties of fluorophores by combining expertise in optics and photophysics. Especially, study of excited state dynamics at different time scale is pursued in order to select proper dyes for single molecules measurements.

7 About QNS Main Research Assets : Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) The Scanning Tunneling Microscope is a conceptually rather simple tool that has amazing capabilities. It images the surface of a material (sample) by bringing a really sharp metal needle (tip) very close. The actual distance between the last atom on the tip and the atoms on the surface of the sample is about one nanometer. At this close approach, electrons can jump from tip to sample and from sample to tip by using the quantum mechanical effect called tunneling. When a small voltage is applied between tip and sample, a current flows, which we measure. This current is extremely sensitive to the distance: for example it become 10 times smaller when the distance is increased from 1 to 1.1nm. At QNS, we are using STM not only to image surfaces with atomic resolution but also to move the atoms into desired configurations. This enable us to engineer these nanostructures and then build them with ultimate precision. Finally, we use very high resolution spectroscopic measurements to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of such systems. STM tip and sample An image made with atoms using STM

8 Research Highlights Single Atom Memory: The World's Smallest Storage Medium Storing one bit in one atom is possible. It is the extraordinary end of Moore's law. One bit of digital information can now be successfully stored in an individual atom, according to a study published in Nature in March, Current commercially-available magnetic memory devices require approximately one million atoms to do the same. Current QNS s director Andreas Heinrich, led the research effort that made this discovery at IBM Almaden Research Center (USA). This result is a breakthrough in the miniaturization of storage media and has the potential to serve as a basis for quantum computing. Disks coated with a magnetized layer of metal allow our computers to store files in the form of bits, each with the value of either 1 or 0. A certain direction of magnetization corresponds to the 0 bit, the other direction to the 1 bit. While at the moment small areas of the disk, of around a million atom, correspond to each digital bit of information, this research went way beyond this and utilized the smallest amount of matter usable for this purpose: one atom. In this study, scientists worked with a tool, called Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM), which has a special tip that enables the user to view and move individual atoms, as well as to apply a pulse of electrical current to them. They used this electric pulse to change the direction of magnetization of individual holmium atoms. 9 Research Highlights A Quantum Sensor Made from Individual Iron Atoms QNS researchers, in collaboration with a team of IBM researchers in the USA have succeeded in using individual iron atoms as quantum sensors. Using this sensor, they were able to measure the small magnetic field created by neighboring magnetic atoms, an effect that was previously not measurable in scanning tunneling microscopy. This work is the first application of a recent breakthrough invention of the same team, which demonstrated electron spin resonance a quantum mechanical measurement of single spins in the STM. We believe that this quantum sensor can be used to measure the spins in complex molecules with atomic-scale spatial resolution, sort of like a nano- GPS, suggests Taeyoung Choi, first author of the recent study. 4 iron atoms on a thin film of magnesium oxide grown on silver. 10 News Articles 이 세상 모든 영화를 USB 하나에 담는 저장 기술 개발 - 원자 한 개에 1bit 입력 가능. 기존 하드보다 1000배 늘어나 조선일보 원자(原子) 하나에 디지털 정보를 입력하는 기술이 개발됐다. 이 기술이 상용화되면 지금까지 나온 전 세계 모든 영 화를 USB 메모리카드 하나에 담을 수 있을 만큼 메모리 장치 용량이 획기적으로 늘어날 수 있다. 기초과학연구원(IBS) 양자나노과학 연구단 안드레아스 하인리히 단장(이화여대 물리학과 교수)은 "홀뮴(Ho)이라는 원자 한 개에서 1비트(bit 0 또는 1로 나타내는 정보의 최소 단위)의 디지털 신호를 읽는 데 성공했다"고 8일 밝혔다. 컴퓨터는 모든 정보를 0이나 1 의 이진법으로 바꿔 저장한다. 현재 상용화된 하드디스크에서 1비트의 정보를 담으려 면 10만개 정도 원자가 필요한데 이를 원자 한 개 수준까지 줄였다는 것이다. 연구 논문은 네이처 온라인판에 실렸 다. 디지털 정보를 원자에 저장하는 방식은 '스핀'이라는 물리학 이론으로 설명한다. 원자 주변에 자기장을 흘려줬을 때 나타나는 성질을 확인해 이를 정보로 인식하는 것이다. 원자 안에는 음의 전기를 띠는 전자가 돌기 때문에 원자 자체 가 자석처럼 자성(磁性)을 갖는다. 자성을 띠는 원자가 자기장에 반응해 배열이 바뀌는데 이런 현상을 스핀이라고 한 다. 원자의 배열이 외부 자기장이 흐르는 방향과 같은 방향이면 '위(up)', 반대 방향으로 놓이면 '아래(down)'라고 표 현한다. '위'를 0, '아래'를 1로 정해놓으면 원자 하나가 자기장에서 놓이는 방향에 따라 1비트의 정보를 읽어낼 수 있 다는 게 연구진의 설명이다. 연구진은 홀뮴 원자에 나노미터(1나노는 10억분의 1m) 단위의 미세한 전기 탐침으로 전기를 가해 홀뮴의 자성을 조절했다. 전기를 강하게 줄 때 전자가 방출되는데, 이때 원자의 자성이 바뀌어 스핀이 '위'나 '아래'에 놓이게 된다. 원자에 정보를 입력하는 것이다. 연구진은 이후 정보를 읽는 데 철(Fe) 원자 를 사용했다. 쇳가루가 자석 가까이에 가면 배열 형태가 달라지는 것처럼 철 원자도 자성을 띤 홀뮴 근처에 가면 배열 방향이 바뀐다. 연구진은 이 특징을 이용해 홀뮴의 스핀 방향을 파악할 수 있었다. 연구진은 원자 하나에 정보를 담는 기술이 상용화되면 저장 용량을 기존 하 드디스크보다 약 1000배 높일 수 있을 것으로 전망했다. 하인리히 단장은 " 이론적으로 원자 하나보다 작은 저장 단위를 만드는 건 불가능하다"며 "이번 연구는 영하 272도의 극저 환경에서 이뤄졌기 때문에 실온에서도 정보를 원 자에 저장할 수 있는 기술 개발에 착수할 것"이라고 말했다. 최인준 기자

12 News Articles 칸 국제광고제에서 황금사자상 받은 물리학자가 한국에 왜? 서울신문 만년 전 기후를 분석해 인류의 이동 경로를 분석한 지구과학자와 세계에서 가장 작은 영화를 만들어 칸 국제광고제 에서 황사자상을 받은 양자물리학자가 국내에서 기후변화와 양자컴퓨터 연구를 시작한다. 기초과학연구원(IBS)가 액슬 티머먼(47) 미국 하와이대 교수와 안드레아스 하인리히(48) 이화여대 석좌교수를 각각 기후물리연구단과 양자나노과학연구단 단장으로 임명했다고 4일 밝혔다. 기후물리연구단 단장인 티머먼 교수는 독일계 과학자로 막스플랑크 기상학연구소를 거쳐 하와이대 해양학 교수로 재직 중이며 해양기후학 분야에서 대표적인 석학이다. 지난해에는 12만5000여년 전 기후변화를 추적해 초기 인류 의 이동경로를 밝힌 연구를 세계적인 과학저널 네이처 에 발표해 학계는 물론 대중들의 주목을 받은바 있다. 티머먼 단장은 엘니뇨 상호작용과 기후변동, 고(古)기후역학 등을 중점 연구하면서 기후에 영향을 미치는 다양한 요소들을 고려해 모델을 만들고 슈퍼컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 통해 과거, 현재 그리고 미래의 기후변화에 대한 종합적 연구를 할 계획이다. 양자나노과학연구단 단장으로 임명된 하인리히 교수도 독일계 과학자로 지난해 이화여대에 임용되기 전까지 IBM 알마덴 연구소에서 20여년간 고체물리학과 광학연구를 해왔다. 특히 주사터널링현미경(Scanning Tunneling Microscope STM) 분야 최고 권위자로 알려져 있다. STM은 전자의 양자역학적 성질을 이용해 물질 표면의 이미지 를 원자 수준까지 확보할 수 있는 장비다. 수평 방향으로는 0.1 (나노미터), 수직으로는 0.01 가량의 고해상도를 보이기 때문에 원자를 하나씩 보거나 움직이게 할 수도 있다. 하인리히 단장은 2013년 구리 기판 위 일산화탄소 분자들을 하나씩 옮겨 만든 스톱모션 애니메이션 소년과 그의 원 자 라는 작품으로 칸 국제광고제 황금사자상을 받고 기네스북에 세계에서 가장 작은 영화로 이름을 올리기도 했다. 하인리히 단장은 원자 단위의 양자적 특성을 연구해 양자컴퓨팅의 정보 기본단위인 큐비트의 원자 수준 제어를 목표 로 연구할 예정이다. 양자컴퓨터는 현재 있는 슈퍼컴퓨터로도 1000년이 걸리는 계산을 양자 알고리즘을 이용해 4분 만에 답을 낼 수 있는 미래형 컴퓨터로 구글은 물론 MS 등에서도 양자컴퓨터 개발을 위해 인력과 자금을 대거 투입 하고 있는 상황이다. 김두철 IBS 원장은 이번에 새로 만든 신규 연구단은 사회적, 경제적 파급효과가 큰 기초과학을 연구하게 될 것이며 연구단을 이끄는 과학자들도 독창적 연구로 세계적인 명성을 얻고 있는 최고 수준의 학자들 이라며 한국의 기초과 학이 새로운 지식의 영역을 개척하고 전 지구적 이슈에 대응하는데도 큰 역할을 하게 될 것 이라고 말했다. 한편 이번 2개의 연구단이 신설되면서 IBS는 총 28개의 연구단을 갖추게 됐고 이 중 외국인 연구단장은 10명 (한국계 4명 포함)으로 늘었다. 유용하 기자
