A bus leads us to Dharamsala, the capital of the Tibetan government in exile, located in the northern part of India, a good two days drive from New Delhi. Three years ago, as a fifteen-year-old girl, I had set foot to China for the first time. I had gone there accompanied by my father, a visiting professor of the Peking University. To me travel was a new challenge, and Tibet was a new shock. For Example, I would like to explore the answers to several questions, including: Why should we only apply western concepts of democracy to East Asia? Does East Asia really share a common Confucian cultural heritage and a similar norm of Confucianism? What is the influence of political cultures and systems among East Asian countries? What are the limitations or potential abilities of Asian democracies compared to a democracy in the U.S? For Example, It is the East Asian Studies program at Yale University that I need most, not to analyze and observe my country with a lopsided or fixed way of thinking, but to take a look at and to understand the country and the whole world with a great breadth of vision. For Example, After completion of your course, my goal is to be a professor and a writer, such as Alexis de Tocqueville, who can analyze American political culture as well as his own country. I would like to be a scholar who ruminates on the issues of political cultures resulting from the system and the system resulting from the culture by analyzing the political systems constituting one country.
