Planned Performances The Daegu Opera House staged 5 operas, 13 concerts, 2 ballets, and 3 lectureconcerts and operas under the banner of Opera for Everyone in 2016. Starting with staging <Cavalleria Rusticana> and <Pagliacci>, representative verismo operas, in the opera house, it showed 23 special performances 54 times over one work a month from operas including not only operas such as <Madam Butterfly>, a sophisticating full stage opera, <The Magic Flute>, a pleasant family opera, and <The Bat>, an operetta for year-end and new year s, but also gala concerts by inviting Korean singers actively involved in the world-class stages, performances by amateurs and new singers, elegant ballet, lecture- operas and concerts with a commentary, concerts for Lunar New Year s Day and Korean Thanksgiving Day, the biggest holidays in Korea. Consequently, the ticket-sales reached 76.7%, which greatly helped make the Daegu Opera House approach the citizens more closely in 2016.

Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci Venue Daegu Opera House Opera Daegu Opera House staged <Cavalleria Rusticana> and <Pagliacci>, Verismo based operas, plainly describing love and jealousy between men and women, as the first special performance of 2016. Two works, representatives of realism, have usually been staged together because of their similarities including short show times of 80 minutes and moods. However, it was rare to display two full performances together in areas out of Seoul, the capital of Korea, which made them more special. Excellent harmony between and great acting skills of leading and rising singers stood out, and in particular, what was more special about the performances was making ordinary citizens have special experience by appearing as part of the works. Concert New-year's day Concert Venue Daegu Opera House Daegu Opera House prepared for special performances for Lunar New Year's Day, one of the Korea s biggest holidays. Diverse programs including operatic arias performed by the best local singers, fond Korean art songs, and cheerful fusion Korean classical music accompanied with folk songs and Daegeum (a large transverse bamboo flute) were orchestrated together and received fervent response from the audience regardless of age or sex. Local residents visiting their relatives for New Year s Day and families came to see the performances, and also made great memories by joining folk games played at the outdoor square before the show. Venue Daegu Opera House Lecture <La Boheme>, a love story about young and poor artists with Puccini s unique romantic and lyrical melody, which has received popular affection of all ages. <La Boheme>, as the first lecture opera staged with interpretation, prepared by Daegu Opera House in 2016 is also the opening performance of the Daegu International Opera Festival this coming October, which gave an opportunity to enjoy the show in advance before the full-performance opera. Park Myungki, the artistic director of Daegu Opera House commented the performance, which greatly contributed to helping understand the entire work, and Baek Yoonhak active mainly in Korea and the U.S. conducted it. César Iván Lara from Venezuela conducted the performance, Yu Cheolwoo participating in several operas in local areas directed it, and Lee Hwayoung and Oh Heejin, the best local sopranos, appeared in the work and successfully played changing women Cio-Cio-San from a little girl to a mighty mother in a wide-ranging spectrum. In particular, great singers including Baek Yoonki, a tenor attached to Theater Kiel, Germany and Park Sinhae, a tenor active in local areas also joined the performance, which made a great contribution to showing the essence of <Madam Butterfly>. 16 17

This performance included 6 shows from classical ballet to Korea-created ballet, which made the audience never get bored. Not only gorgeous dancing of principal dancers in the Korean National Ballet but also playing of Dio Orchestra permanently stationed at Daegu Opera House under the Kim Jongwook s conduction, a music director of the Korean National Ballet made the performance more sophisticated by gratifying sight and hearing. 18 19

Ha Seokbae Artistic Director Park Myungki G.Becaud Nathalie S.Cardlillo Core'ngrato Sing Korean-Art-Songs Day, specially prepared, to spread Korea s history and emotion, and Korean art songs full of beauty of Korean words, is a new-concept concert the performers and audiences participate together and communicate each other. Prominent singers having made great efforts in popularizing Korean art songs not only in concerts but also in press media appeared and played well-known Korean art songs including 'Magnolia Flower' and 'In the Front of House' with the audience. They also had an interesting talk show with stories about music and how to sing the songs well, which received huge response from the audience. In addition, on that day, audiences who watched the performance were offered with a music book containing the songs to be sung with the singers for free. 20 21

Concert Europe Opera Stars Venue Daegu Opera House 'Europe Opera Stars,' a high-class opera gala concert, was staged by inviting stars in singing taking an active part not only in Korea but also in Europe, the origin of an opera. Kim Dukki, the conductor, well-known both in an opera and symphony, and Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, the best symphony orchestra in Korea performed together by adding force and dignity. In particular, four singers, over half, including Kwon Jaehee, a tenor, Lee Donghwan, a baritone, Lee Eungkwang, a baritone, and Jun Taehyun, a bass started their singing from Daegu, which ensured the status of Daegu as the Hub City of Performing Arts. The Daegu Opera House newly staged <The Magic Flute>, the last masterpiece of Mozart, as family opera. From major songs, the core of the performance, to lines set up in Korean to the level of children, it was organized meaningfully such in a short time of 70 minutes. Moreover, new young singers discovered by Daegu Opera House appeared as major and supporting roles, who made the performance witty and lively. On that day, special events including magic show, face-painting and ice-tunnel were also provided at the lobby one hour before the performance, enough to wash away the summer heat, so it received great response especially from family-unit audience. 24 25

Concert Opera Open Concert Venue Daegu Opera House On the first day of September, the day romance of autumn just started, Opera Open Concert, a special performance, was prepared to stimulate sensitivity with beautiful music and narrow the distance with classical music and opera for citizens. The performance with great expectations for the appearance of Kim Donggyu, known as the Korea s baritone and locally popular singers from its beginning demonstrated the essence of open classical music to the citizens with Lee Kyunggoo, a conductor in classical music in 'KBS Open Concert' and Korean Pops Orchestra approaching the audience more friendly by arranging music with high popularity by themselves. Concert Opera In Cinema Venue Daegu Opera House Daegu Opera House prepared for Opera in Cinema, a lecture concert to celebrate Korean Thanksgiving Day, one of the Korea's biggest holidays. The concert prepared by selecting works borrowing opera arias and instrumental music out of numerous excellent pieces of music setting atmospheres and themes of the movies and sometimes giving deeper impression than the movies provided a chance to appreciate major songs put in the movies through professional orchestra and even helped people feel the music more lively with professional commentation on the movies and music. Ballet Dramatic Ballet Cinderella Venue Daegu Opera House <Cinderella>, beautiful dramatic ballet based on a fairy tale, was staged. The performance was approachable to people more easily and pleasantly who even barely knew ballet by organizing the show with choreography full of various and fresh attractions created with both technique of classical ballet and interesting motions loved by children, and a rich spectacle such as mime, costume, light, and stage art. Training project for the young musicians In 2016, Daegu Opera House actively promoted projects to discover the next generation of musicians who will lead the Korean music industry. Since 2007, the 237 students and prospective vocalists showed their talent in five projects from the following 5 projects which Daegu Opera House has hosted, from 'Concours for rookie vocalists' which has established themselves as a gateway to new vocalists for 10 years, the 'Opera Universiade', a specialized college student opera festival unique to Daegu Opera House and excellent students from seven music colleges and universities in Korea and abroad met worldwide producers while providing stage experience, 'Creative Song Festival for a college student' which excavated the talents of young composers and rediscovered the beauty of the Korean song, and 'Deutsche Oper Berlin Audition', a program for sending vocalists to one of the best theaters in Germany to 'Meet the Opera Stars - Master Class' which invited vocalists with the best name value in Korea.

Kim received the honor with the song of Way to the Ocean by Park, Dujin, writing the music for the poem. The total of 16 soon-to-be composers passing a preliminary round competed each other on the contest held at the stage of Daegu Opera House, with songs composed by themselves. Judging committee mentioned that the most important criteria on the screening was how well lyrics and music got along and whether accompaniment supported it and also added that he highly appreciated growth potential of the participants in the future. 52 53

Deutsche Oper Berlin audition in Korea Christoph Seuferle Bass Bar. The Daegu Opera House held an audition for singers who would like to enter into the best theaters in Europe in collaboration with WCN, an arts agency working mostly in Europe. Kim Byeonggil selected, a bass-baritone, not only obtained scholarship but also had an opportunity to have a special performance in Deutsche Oper Berlin proud of their best reputation in Germany. Christoph Seuferle, the director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin visited Korea on that day and evaluated songs of the 29 finalists from all over Korea. With the beginning of this audition, the Daegu Opera House has planned to continue cultural exchange with Deutsche Oper Berlin and make it as a stepping stone to having more diverse international exchange programs. 54 55

Masterclass with Opera Stars Sop. Sop. Bar. Bar. Bass Sop. Sop. Master classes were opened which provided an opportunity to have one-to-one coaching by representative singers in Korea having performances in the word-class opera houses including Seo, Seon-Yeong, a soprano, winning the Chaikovskii Competition, Hong, Hye-Ran, a soprano, winning the Queen Elizabeth Competition, Go, Seong-Hyeon, truly the best baritone in Korea, and Yang, Tae-Jung and Sim, In-Seong, baritones, who were principal singers in Vienna State Opera. The classes by the singers were simultaneously provided at 10 in the morning, and 1 and 4 in the afternoon in each separate place. Students or graduates in arts high schools or majoring in music in college, and even ordinary citizens interested in singing were able to take the class. People who did not enroll for the one-to-one coaching were also able to audit the class, and in particular, 50%-discount for the participating fee was offered for high school students, which helped attract many future singers. 14 th Daegu International Opera Festival Rejoice after Suffering The 14th Daegu Opera Festival was held under the theme of Rejoice after Suffering which tried to provide true happiness to the citizens through high class performing arts works in the economically and socially hard times. In particular, this event was considered to well-balance popularity and quality by arranging works which were not usually staged in Korea but meaningful as it was, enough to fulfill growing desires of audience to appreciate arts including <Fidelio> and <Orfeo ed Euridice>, and performances all the time popular, such as <La Boheme>, <Tosca>, and <Carmen>. In addition, <La Boheme>, the opening work, was produced in collaboration with Gwangju City Opera, and <Carmen>, the closing one, cooperated with Seongnam Cultural Foundation which showed a great achievement of expanding exchange between cities and theaters. Furthermore, profits from the ticket sales increased by 30% compared with last year, meaning the base of the audience was expanded, which helped the event more financially stabilized.

By putting solo pieces, duets and chorus arranging opera arias such as Una Furtiva Lagrima in Korean and making all the performers sing and enjoy together without separating leading from supporting roles, it received a big compliment of true children's opera. Around 50 children taking children's opera class, a program specialized for children provided only by Daegu Opera House had practiced long and hard to come on stage, and they filled the stage with cheerful and genuine attraction. The Healing Amateur Opera staging multiple and pleasant performances including <Spring Spring>, Korea-created opera and <L'elisir d'amore>, an Italian comic opera, with ambition and passion of amateurs as good as professional opera singers performed <La Pizza con Funghi>, a contemporary opera. <La Pizza con Funghi>, a dark comedy-style opera composed by Seymour Barab, the maestro in a comic opera in the 20th century is a contemporary opera with a story about meeting, love, betrayal, jealous, and death between four main characters. In addition, vivid acting with artistic music in the background and Italian bel canto melody flowing with rich comic aspects were distinctive. The amateur singers practiced with all their heart for two months, and a sizable crowd gathered at the performance and celebrated their new challenge.

The performance staged at the opera salon, a multi-purposed cultural hall, located at the 1st floor of Daegu Opera House for free minimized stage, costume and playing, and helped understand the audience by keeping the lines in Latin but translating them in Korean. In addition, many new young singers were cast, so they made a great contribution to expanding repertoire and experience on stage. Opera Academy The Daegu Opera House, the only opera-specializing foundation in Korea, has provided realistic and differentiated opera experience-based education as it has offered sophisticating opera specializing education, so it has received favorable reviews on its curriculum and quality considered highly systematic and professional. Entering 2016, Opera class-i can be an opera star previously targeting for ordinary citizens was changed into customized class by level, Opera-based humanities class was newly opened for opera lovers, and Dream-attic Saturday cultural school was offered by order completing the class, which helped to provide a chance of opera education for more children than last year. The Architecture The Lobby The Auditorium With the tight yet gentle curves in the roof, the beautifully curving walls and the seats arranged in a horseshoe shape, the Daegu Opera House is an iconic building that represents the sophistication of the 21st century architectural style. The Daegu Opera House is a perforance hall that meets the acoustic and visual requirements of comprehensive art forms such as the opera, and makes it possible to present musicals, ballet, dance and theatrical productions through efficient operation and management of the building spaces and stage devices. Although the lobby isn't large, the spacial constraints are not apparent because of the high veiling and walls that reach up to the fourth floor and the striking view of the outside and the space rather seems cozy. Daegu Opera House can accommodate a total of 1,508 people on the first through fourth floor and in the orchesta pit. The seats were arrange in a horseshoe shape, witch is the classical theaters in Europe, with a modern twist. Every seat in Daegu Opera House, designed to have the essential conditions that world maximize the audience's enjoyment, is located no farther than 35m away from the stage to ensure that ever person in the audience can clearly here the sound of the actor's voices and see their faces. Stage Sound System Daegu Opera House is equipped with a 1,485m 2 stage facility, which is suitable for operas and other performing arts. There are side (left and right) stages and the backstage in addition to the main stage to facilitate stage transitions, while 10backdrop curtains allow a display of various settings. In addition, there is a background curtain, lighting equipment and lift devices on the stage floor. Daegu Opera House, which is a proscenium theater, separates the audience and the stage with a proscenium arch. The size of the proscenium is 10.5m 15m, while each of the side stages and the backstage re equipped with 9 auxiliary stage sets and 4 mobile stages. The orchestra pit can hold p to 110 people in up to a maximum of 4 orchestra sections depending on the scale of the performance and the type of music being palyed. Moreover, the size of the pit can also be altered to expand the stage or to add more seats whenever necessary. Daegu Opera House Paid an extra careful attention to the acoustics. Living up to the reputation as a venue for large-scale performances of various genres, it uses topnotch acoustic equipment with careful considerations to satisfy those with sensitive ears. The size of the hall and the seating(w:25m L:34m H:15.48m) at Daegu Opera House are appropriate to provide optimum, acoustics. With the application of architectural acoustic design suitable for a performance hall accommodating 1,508 people, the people in the back and the balconies on both sides are able to enjoy rich sounds as well. It has been designed to have 1.2 to 1.6 seconds of reverberation and only 0.02-sec difference between direct and indirect sounds without any resonance effect. Also, 48 roll screens were installed in the ceiling dome to adjust sound absorption and reflection rate depending on the type of performance and intention of the producers, and sound absorption curtains have been placed on the system to create the necessary sound effects for operas, musicals and plays, exert precise control of the acoustics and record and/or play sounds. In addition, and apron screen and front speakers have been installed in the front of the stage for the audience. 104 105

Lighting Rehearsal Room Dressing Room Lighting is essential when it comes to performing arts. Lights placed atop, below, and in front of a stage can be used in combination to create the desired visual effect and can be expanded or reduced in accordance with nature of the play being staged. In addition to the stage lights, the lights inside and outside the building were designed to have a refined and classy appearance to suit the venue, and accentuate the architectural characteristics and nature of the venue, taking into account the fact that it is mostly used in the evening and nighttime. Also, high definition video can be projected on to the 600" big screen using a beam projector from behind, and a projector and a screen for subtitles have also been installed to help the audience understand the particular opera or performance they are watching. The Daegu Opera House houses a total of 5 rehearsal rooms : 1 large rehearsal room(68.1 pyeong), 1 medium-sized rehearsal room(52.3 pyeong), and 3 small rehearsal room (22.5 pyeong) to assure enough rehearsal spaces for various genres including opera, ballet and chorus. In particular, the large rehearsal room is situated on the 3rd floor of the building with a great natural light and ventilationl. There are 5 individual dressing rooms (23.5 pyeong) and 2 regular dressing rooms (67 pyeong) for the lead actors, and 2 dreesing rooms for ihe support cast (46 pyeong). The individual dressing rooms are equipped with a shower stall, closet and piano to ensure that the cast members can prepare for their performances in their best conditions. 106 107

To support & encourage citizens' 'daily artistic activities,' the newly decorated Opera Salon takes pride in its simple & modernistic ambience. Besides its monthly concerts performed for free, it has settled as a useful place not just for artists but the general public as well because it can be lent anytime.
