29th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." Jesus had a brilliant way of navigating tricky situations. In today's Gospel, the Pharisees "plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech." But he outwitted them, as usual. They wanted to catch him being a political rebel; they expected him to suggest that paying taxes to Caesar was unnecessary or even unjust. But instead, he shifted the focus. He emphasized the importance of fulilling our civic responsibilities but also the necessity of giving to God what we owe him. So, how do we know what we should "repay" to God? Well, Jesus' response to the Pharisees gives us our answer. He looked at the Roman coin that bore the image of Caesar on it. Then he concluded that the coin belonged to Caesar because it was made in his likeness. Now, what bears the image of God? What is made in his likeness? We are! "God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them" (Gn 1:27). If the coin belonged to Caesar, we belong to God. We repay God by giving him ourselves! This selfgiving is what the Second Vatican Council called "the obedience of faith." Through this spiritual obedience, we freely commit ourselves to God, "offering the full submission of intellect and will to God" (Dei Verbum #5). Jesus is calling us today to use our will to choose to follow God. Indeed, the one thing we can give God in return for the gift of life is our will. He gave us the freedom to love him or not. And while the choice is always ours, today Jesus encourages us to make the right decision by giving God what is really his: ourselves! From Jan DOORS What door would you have God open for you; a door to wealth, happiness, a different job, more talent? In the first reading today, thelordtakes Cyrus by his hand and opens doors before him, leaving the gates unbarred, a promise of military power which leads eventually to the return of the Jews from the Babylonian Capvity. Opening doors can be a religious metaphor as well as a polical onea metaphor for discipleship and spiritual growth. In today s scripture from Isaiah, theLordis the gate keeper and door opener, but nowthe People of Godare the ones who pass through the opened doors. As disciples of Christ, we too are gate keepers and door openers and ask: What doors do I need to open forothers? When we open a door this week in conversaon or in meeng, we never know when we ll be face to face with the sacred; the place where grace lives, where reconciliaon is possible. This is the place where the seeds of understanding, compassion, kindheartedness, hope, courage and faith take root. What door would you have God open for you and what doors do you need to open for others? Mary received a voice mail from a lady that found the Rosary In Danbury, SK. It touched the lady who found it enough, that she rushed to the general store in Danbury and used their phone to call us! She found it at 7:30 am on Thursday. She left a phone number, so Mary Called back and a very nice gentleman answered the phone and told her that the Rosary had landed in their town. It went exactly the opposite way the wind was supposed to blow. According to one of our Catechist's calculations, our Rosary traveled at an average speed of 53 mph.
