TRAVEL FOR DECEMBER / A chilly winter day in Seoul, a megacity with a long history I have turned the last page of my calendar. It s now December and winter has officially begun, the temperature is dropping and the days are shortening. It s a good time to take a long walk and look back and reflect on how the year has gone. I set off thinking about the seasons that have passed and the people I have met. Walking through Seoul, I was reminded of the wide variety of colorful lives people are living in this vast city. Adagio Travelling into the past 1 2 3 4 5 6 Looking at the busy streets filled with cars, you may wonder whether there are even any good places to walk. However, there are indeed many. In this city with a history of over 600 years, there are many historical sites. These include the original four main gates into Seoul, four small gates and the palaces within. There are four paths, which are called Hanyangdosung-gil, in between each of the four main gates, in which eight national treasures and 178 registered cultural assets can be found. During the Korean war, the paths were heavily damaged. However, over 70% of the paths have now been restored. It is hoped that the paths will be registered as a UNESCO heritage site in the near future. Korea is a very mountainous country and Seoul is no exception with Bukhansan(mountain) located in the north of the city. There are a total of 21 trekking paths called Dule-gil around the Bukhansan each with different names and themes such as water, soil and village. Jungdong-gil by Deoksugung is right in the center of the old Seoul. Strolling around Deoksugung with a warm cup of coffee is wonderfully refreshing. Jungdong-gil is a beautiful street with many historical buildings such as the Appenzeller / Noble Memorial museum(the first modern school in Korea), Jungdong Jaeil church(one of the earliest churches in Korea) and the old Russian legation. Walking along, you will feel like you have been transported back in time. 1/ 2/ 3/ 4/ 5/ 6/ 7/ 7 / 14 / 15
1 2 3 MODERATO 1/ 2/ 3/ Moderato The remains of the old city at the heart of a modern city In the districts of Cheongun-dong, Hyojadong and Sajik-dong, there is a town called Seochon, which has some of the best preserved buildings, with over 600 traditional houses and a traditional market. This is a wonderful place to hang out if you want to experience the old Seoul and avoid the crowds. In the traditional market, Tongin-sijang, the narrow streets are full of small shops. For only 5,000 KRW you can get a full meal at the Dosirak café, which is less than 5 USD. This is a popular lunch spot for local residents and office workers alike. Only a short walk towards Suseong-dong valley is the Park Nosoo museum. The museum has a small library and attic, which are typical features of houses built in the early 20 th century. The house also has a small observation deck from which there is a marvelous view of Seochon. The Suseongdong valley of Inwangsan(mountain) serves as an impressive backdrop, creating a magical atmosphere. With paintings and art work scattered throughout, the Ihwadong Byukhwa Maul, located by Naksan village, is an especially pleasant place for a stroll. The village also has decorated structures such as Flower steps and Fish steps. Community farms and gathering grounds are also important features of the village. / 16 / 17
VIVACE 1 Vivace From bakeries to flea markets 2 3 Seoul is full of franchised bakeries and cafes. Yet, you can also find real bakers, some of which are located near Hongik University. In fact, the area has become known as the place to find some of the most skilled bakers in Seoul, such that many people now visit the Hongik University area to tour the bakeries. Recently, farmers market called Marche@Hyehwa opened in Daehakro. It only opens once a month on the second Monday of each month, between 11 AM and 4 PM. Some of the produce comes from urban community farms and other items are from novice farmers. If you fancy something different, try the flea market in Hwanghak-dong. Operated by seasoned merchants, the flea market sells almost everything from tools, to old books to second handbags and clothes. You will never get bored with so much to look at and buy. Once I had finished exploring Seoul, I felt like heading to Namsan(mountain). A short ride on the cable car took me to the top. The night view from the top of Namsan is a wonderful thing, especially in winter when if the air is clear, you will be able to see the stars. An ideal location for a Christmas stroll! 1/ 4/ 2/ 5/ 3/ 4 5 / 18 / 19

EYES-ON / Seoul, the capital of Republic of Korea, has matured into one of the largest, busiest and best known cities in the world with a population of more than 10 million people. It is no question that many Koreans find Seoul a great place to work and live. Yet, would the Hyundai Motor Group employees from overseas enjoy living in Seoul as much as locals do? Here are some of their favorite things about Seoul. A Korean Barbecue by the Beautiful Han River Vusal Mammadov I became strongly attracted to Seoul, watching Korean movies and reading books about Korea and always dreamed about living Korea. The dream did come true for me and I fell instantly in love with Seoul on the first day of my arrival. Seoul is a city full of unique culture and the food is my favorite part of it. They are superbly delicious and very healthy in general. I often go for a barbeque with my friends and I have a blast every time I do. I look forward to my next barbecue by the beautiful Han River with my friends from Azerbaijan. Mountain Hiking in Seoul: A Rejuvenating Experience A City with Virtually Everything You Can Imagine and More Roberto Q. De Lara Mir Jarimbetov When my friends ask me where to go for the weekend, I recommend going hiking on one of the many mountains within Seoul. The trails are very well-maintained and suitable for even the least experienced hikers. Unlike the mountains in my home country, The Philippines, the mountains in Seoul dramatically change during the seasons providing a new experience each time. I feel greatly refreshed when I breathe in fresh air as I hike up and down the Achasan and Yongmasan(mountains). Trying out new Korean food is a great part of hiking in Korea. Although I suffer from eating strong spices when I choose too spicy of food, they are always worth a try. If you are adventurous about food, go for the Bulgogi and Doenjang-Stew, which are always great. My life in Seoul began in April 2013 when I began working for Hyundai Engineering. The rush hour commute can be quite stressful but there are many great things about Seoul which make up for it. In short, Seoul is a city with everything. Shopping malls, amusement parks, theaters, zoos, you name it. There are always things to do. There is so much energy in the city and it charges me up to get out there and do new things while having so much fun. I am currently stationed at an Uzbekistani site but I plan to take a vacation to spend some time in Seoul. One of the best things about Seoul is the people who are so kind to foreign travelers. I look forward to mingling with Koreans doing many things I haven t tried yet. / 22 / 23
