2 - Senior Activity Center News January 2018 Software Update Scam Seniors and other computer owners have reported receiving voicemails from so-called technicians claiming to represent Microsoft. The callers warn consumers that their Windows license key has expired and all services will be suspended unless they call a toll-free number. In the Software Update Scam, unsuspecting computer owners call the toll-free number and are told they must provide access to their computers so technicians can update their software. Once the scammers gain access to a computer, they can install malware, obtain banking passwords, usernames, and even lock out computer owners. The fraudsters demand money in exchange for allowing consumers to regain access to their own computers. This scam has become so prevalent that Microsoft placed in this warning on its website: Remember, Microsoft will never proactively reach out to you to provide unsolicited PS or technical support. Any communication we have with you must be initiated by you. Helpful Tips 1. Take a moment to check your computer before you respond. 2. Find and call the software manufacturer s main customer support number. Do not call the phone number left on the voicemail. 3. Never give control of your computer to anyone unless you can confirm their identity, the legitimacy of their request and that access is truly required. Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. Estafa de actualización de software Las personas mayores y otros propietarios de computadoras han informado haber recibido correos de voz de los llamados técnicos que dicen representar a Microsoft. Las personas que llaman advierten a los consumidores que su clave de licencia de Windows ha expirado y que todos los servicios se suspenderán a menos que llamen a un número gratuito. All trips are subject to cancellation or re-scheduling. **On the day of the trip, please come to the Senior Activity Center Office to check-in** The driver will not wait for you, if you are not there at the designated time of departure. Public transportation encouraged. Several major bus lines stop in front of Angelus Plaza or one to two blocks away.
