Abstract Case Study for Applying Co-construction of Scientific Modeling Process to Geological Field: Focusing on Model Developing Course Choi, Yo Han Earth Science Major in Science Education Division The Graduate School Seoul National University In the science education academia in Korea, this is increasing interest of teaching program using scientific model for student-centered scientific exploration study. And because exploration contents of earth-science are usually difficult in limited space, geological field is receiving the spotlight for the alternative of effective earth-science study. In this study, co-construction of scientific modeling strategy was applied by geological field for middle-school gifted-talent student. We observed developments of their scientific model, and investigated about factors that influence on that model developing course. Participants of our project are 20 persons that 2th grade of middle-school students - 91 -
and member of S University's institute of science-gifted education. The place for this geological field is Mai mountain located in Jinan, Jeollanam-do. And the target of this field work was 'Formation of Mai mountain'. Students were engaged in field trip which is based on the co-construction of scientific modeling strategy. They had second times of group discussing time, and next morning they announced their model to the other group and teachers. They were 5 groups(4 students in a group). And we choose 3 groups that have unique features and analyzed. The consclusive summary of this study is in the following. First, whole groups arrived their group models similar to the target model that teachers agreed before field work. We confirmed that based on data from their observed facts in the mountain, group models were constructed by interaction betweer teacher and students. Second, group models were usually developed from students' observed facts over their inferences. But teacher's intervention in the course showed up so greatly. So we analyzed that mainly teachers offered observed fact, and over students' inferences, they developed some models. Finally, how to participate in this discussion, group member's personal contexts was influence on this overall model construction. Co-construction of scientific modeling class in the school don't lay answer of the problem, and based on limited data which teacher offered, this class is conducted in the manner discuss formed to the target. On the other hand, geological field can induce students' model development based on various observed fact. And we think that this activity which devate with colleagues with their personal model, agree in the group model, and announce to the whole class is a good chance to develop students' nature of science. - 92 -
