Summary Title of Project Key Words Quality Control and a Preliminary Study on Computer Assisted Personal Interview System for Nutrition Survey of KNHANES (2013) KNHANES, Quality control, CAPI, Pilot test Institute Korea Health Industry Development Institute Project Leader Cho-il Kim Project Period 2013. 3. 12-2013. 12. 11 This study was conducted for quality control on nutrition survey at the field, and to review and cross check the data produced form each step of the survey for data editing & cleaning to minimize systematic errors in the 1st year (2013) of Korea National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey โ ฅ (KNHANES โ ฅ). Also, another objective of this study was to examine the applicability of the Computer-Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) method to nutrition survey of KNHANES as compared with the traditional paper-and-pencil based personal interview (PAPI) method. Quality control at the field level was performed with the checklist of the quality control manual. The result of quality control at the field monitoring resulted in an average score of 97.1 for all interviewers, implying the high quality of the survey by experienced interviewers. This was possible through a continuous re-training of interviewers to prevent loosened discipline and slackened enthusiasm with repeated interviews. Also a data set for statistical analysis to estimate food and nutrient intake of the population was constructed after a series of thorough reviews and cross-checking for missing information, erroneous values, mistaken codes, logical errors, missing digits, statistical outliers, etc. on raw data from nutrition survey of KNHANES โ ค. In the pilot survey, the number of respondents participated in both surveys using either CAPI or PAPI (Paper-and-Pencil based personal Interview) method was 202. We compared the results from each interview component of nutrition survey between 2 methods using identical procedures of statistics for KNHANES, and found no difference in any of them. And we estimated the time required in conducting survey with each method. The time required for components other than dietary intake survey component were shorter for CAPI than PAPI. Although the time required for dietary intake survey using 24hr recall method was longer for CAPI, the net time required for nutrition survey would be shorter for CAPI because PAPI needs additional work & time for data coding and input after completion of interview. Looking for errors and troubles in the CAPI system during the pilot survey also enabled us to produce valuable information to improve and upgrade the system with higher efficiency and stability. Providing the basis to determine the applicability and/or adaptability of the CAPI to nutrition survey of KNHANES, this study is expected to contribute to a more efficient conduct of survey and heightening of the dependability and applicability of data from nutrition survey.
