YOU ARE NUMBERED AMONG THE SAINTS AND OF THE FAMILY OF GOD EHPES 2:19 LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Too many of us who are Christians believe that holiness is for someone else. We believe that the stories of the saints are about super humans who had something in greater supply than us. When our faith is weak, we assume that we can never have the faith of these holy men and women. On the contrary, faith and holiness are not things only possible for a few. But we must practice our faith to grow in our faith. We must strive for holiness if we are to become holy. Like a child fears the water before learning to swim, we often fear the path that leads to greater faith or holiness. We are not convinced that God can work in our lives to create a saint. Yet except for Mary, the Immaculate Conception, every saint was a sinner. God called every saint to exit the boat and walk toward Jesus on the water. In time, with practice and trust in God, they found they did not sink either. GOSPEL MEDITATION The Transiguration of the Lord "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Oh, to be on that mountain! What a priceless experience for Peter, James, and John. If they had ever doubted, if they wondered whether Jesus was really who he said he was, their conidence surely got a boost on the day of the Transiguration. Before their very eyes, Jesus' divine beauty radiated gloriously while the two ancient prophets also appeared in miraculous manner. And to top it off, the voice of God the Father spoke from the heavens and conirmed that it was all true: Jesus really is the Son of God! Why did Jesus reveal himself in such a remarkable way to these men? Perhaps we have an answer in today's epistle. Peter writes, "We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain." Peter mentions this fact in order to conirm his credibility as a preacher as he goes on to say, "We possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it." Because of the mission that Peter had to help shape and nurture the Church in its earliest days, his position as an "eyewitness" to the Transiguration helped to gain the attention, and the faith, of his hearers. So although we were not there during this holy apparition, we have the beneit of it. We, and the faithful through the ages, have heard the testimony that Jesus is truly our God from those who saw in person that it was for real. In this way, the Transiguration is able to bolster the faith of many, not just the three men who were there that day. May we have the grace to allow the feast we celebrate today to truly deepen our faith. QUESTION OF THE WEEK Matthew 17:19 Today we hear the voice of God say, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." What helps you listen to Jesus? Daniel 7:910, 1314 In his visions, the prophet Daniel sees the heavenly throne of God (the "Ancient One"). What do you think this divine title reveals about God? 2 Peter 1:1619 The apostle Peter believed Jesus' transiguration revealed his divine "majesty." What else do you think the Transiguration tells us about Jesus? This week we hear about St. Peter telling his congregation about his experience of the Transiguration and asking them to believe him. In the Gospel, we see Jesus closest friends, Peter, James and John, faced with the same problemof believing. On the mountaintop, they witnessed undeniable (and unbelievable) proof that Jesus is God and they were asked to believe in him and obey him. And while the rest of us didn t get to be on that mountaintop, God gives us the greatest gift of allfaithif only we ask for it. Here are some ideas for activities you can do at home this week to help your child Believe : *Read to your child! Share a child s version of the Transiguration reading. Talk about what it must have been like to be one of the Apostles who witnessed it. Talk about how it is to believe even when we don t have that experience directly. I remember when we read this same reading during Lent, and one of the kiddos who attended Children s Liturgy had the best observation: I wouldn t have been afraid, but I sure would have Believed! *Dream together. Together with your child, brainstorm a list of what heaven must be like. If heaven is better than the best thing we can imagine, what must it be like? *Spend the next nice afternoon together watching clouds. Look together for the sunshine that shines out from behind them, the shapes that they make and how lucky we are that we get to imagine the what shapes they are making.
