4 The Road to CXO through KAIST Business School When I talk to MBA students at KAIST or in other countries that I have taught (US, UK, India and China), about their career aspirations, one thing is certain they all want to be CEOs. Generalizing, it can be said that they desire a path that takes them through the CXO designations i.e. CTO, CIO, CFO, CMO, CHRO... to a CEO. And I am sure that they would like to forecast their future, before they choose an MBA school to attend. In this issue, we are highlighting economic and business forecasting, a highly important subject, through the eyes of our faculty, Prof. Jun, Duk Bin and Prof. Noh, Jae Sun. There is a funny saying: forecasting is hard, especially if it is about the future! What else can it be about but hard as it may be, I would like to predict that a degree path through the halls of KAIST Business School is certain to lead to a CXO position. On November 3rd, we hosted our Homecoming Event for our alumni and we had a large gathering of more than 150 alumni. We honored one of our own graduates that day, Mr. Kwon Young Soo, CEO of LG Display he was previously CFO of LG Electronics. Similarly, last year, another of our alums, Mr. Kim Shin Bae, CEO of SK C&C was honored at KAIST. So you see, even though KAIST Business School is very young, just 15 years in existence, we have started to make the dream come true for our graduates. To help with this, we have had a stream of CEOs and CXOs visiting our classrooms and giving lectures to our students. Citibank CEO Ha, Yung-Ku was there in April explaining the strategies of his company and their strategies going forward after this global financial crisis. At the same time, KTB Asset Management CEO Chang, In-Whan focused on how a young but enterprising company can thrive in a down market and what kind of characteristics he was looking for in his employees. President Lee Hae-sun of CJ O Shopping inspired the audience with the excitement of internet enterprises and the global opportunities open to them. And CEO Park, Gee-Won of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction unraveled the strategies behind the successful recreation of Doosan as a global industrial infrastructure heavyweight, moving away from a domestic consumer industry focus. These CEOs not only educated our students by providing them with an understanding of their companies and the related industries but also gave our students helpful insights on how they became successful as budding managers and executives in their companies. On a more focused seminar-style interaction, President Kim, Jae-Ho of Donga Ilbo, Country Director Lee Jae-Hun of ebay, CEO Cho Buem-Ku of Cisco and Managing Director Marcus von Engel of Accenture talked on how the changing information technology infrastructure and consumer preferences were necessitating new business models in their industries. Finally, President Richard Hill thrilled our audience made up of students and faculty on the green strategies of Standard Chartered and his own experiences heading a financial services company after a long history of work experience in consumer goods industry. And this is just the tip of the iceberg here at KAIST we are serious when it comes to equipping all our students not just academically, but also by providing them access to successful business executives to listen to, to question, and to learn from, to prepare for the future in their careers as CXOs.
