GOSPEL MEDITATION 6th Sunday of Ordinary Time We may not like it, but generosity and risk often go handinhand.

Until the nineteenth century, lepers were shunned to the margins of society for fear of spreading the disease. To touch a leper was to risk becoming unclean yourself.

Before Jesus heals the man, he knows full well the desperate nature of his situation. Jesus knows that this man will be overjoyed upon being healed and that he just might tell everyone he knows.

If I go out of my way to help this person, how will it affect my reputation? How will this charitable donation affect my budget? How could I possibly make time to volunteer regularly?

3 GOSPEL MEDITATION 6th Sunday of Ordinary Time We may not like it, but generosity and risk often go handinhand. At least, that's what Jesus shows us in today's Gospel as a leper approaches him for healing. Until the nineteenth century, lepers were shunned to the margins of society for fear of spreading the disease. To touch a leper was to risk becoming unclean yourself. In today's Gospel, Jesus deies convention. "Moved with pity, he reached out his hand, [and] touched him." The leper is healed! But this is not the only risk Jesus takes. Before Jesus heals the man, he knows full well the desperate nature of his situation. Jesus knows that this man will be overjoyed upon being healed and that he just might tell everyone he knows. For a Messiah looking to temporarily ly under the radar, healing this particular leper might not be the best idea. Jesus heals anyway. It can be easy to become calculated in our giving. If I go out of my way to help this person, how will it affect my reputation? How will this charitable donation affect my budget? How could I possibly make time to volunteer regularly? In today's Gospel, Jesus casts these concerns aside. He touches the untouchable. He reaches the unreachable. For his efforts, he receives a betrayal of his request for silence. "The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter." Before long "it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly." Jesus is forced to remain "outside in the deserted places." It would appear, perhaps, that he is unable to accomplish his mission. When we take a risk to be generous, things might not follow the prescribed path. We might be disappointed. We also might be surprised! Our witness to radical generosity is attractive to a world in desperate need. Indeed, when Jesus took risks for love, "People kept coming to him from everywhere." Fast and abstinence The regulations on Lenten fast and abstinence are: FASTING: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, those who are 18 but not yet 60 are allowed only one full meal. ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT: Those who are 14 years of age or older are to abstain from mean on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent ~~~~~~~~~~ The Church no longer attempts to prescribe Lenten practices in detail. The parish of St. Patrick CoCathedral thanks the Fortin Foundation for their gift in response to an application for a grant requesting funding for new vestments, a processional cross, wall hanging fabric, lining, trim, rods and rosettes, labor and a song board. On Ash Wednesday, our liturgical space will be enhanced with purple wall hangings displayed on the two columns beside the ambo and the cantor stand. During the Easter season, we will see white wall hangings. The brass chain holding the wall hangings are the quatrefoil motif, used throughout the sanctuary. (Check out the altar, ambo, ambry, side rails by the ramps and the front door.) This chain was chosen to repeat the motif used in the Gothic setting of our architecture. Using these repeated motifs creates harmony. The rosettes and the rods are specially designed and made to attach the wall hangings to the columns. They arein brass to counter balance thegold accents of the cornices and moldingsused throughout the interior. Keeping the style of the structure consistent in the backgrounds creates thesymmetryand peaceful vision a prayerful space requires. The new oak song board matching the Gothic motif in our Cathedral will be extended from the right side of the column near the organ. Parishioner Matt Usuriello of Usuriello Furniture Studio crafted the song board. 5 The new processional cross, also crafted by Matt Usuriello, is made of oak with a walnut rod stained to match the existing oak and walnutin the sanctuary. (the legs of the altar and ambo are walnut) The corpus on the cross is oak with gold leaf on his crown, nails and drape. The style of the cross matches the cross above the altar. Father Bob will be wearing the purple vestment from the new set of matching vestments. Why are we adding colored wall hangings, a new song board, a new processional cross and vestments? The wall hangings will announce the color of liturgical seasons and will also reflect the colors in the stained glass windows. Displaying long wall hangings up front requires that our present song board needed to be moved. Our present processional cross was always in need of repair. We also wanted a larger corpus on the cross. Our parish does not own a matching set of vestments as most parishes do. Are there other liturgical items being planned for future purchase? Wall hangings for Ordinary Time and Advent.

There will be a slanted music holder and a hidden step underneath the gothic columns. The hidden step will slide under the stand for storage rather than pull down as on the ambo. This will allow for the various heights of the cantors.while the stand is smaller than the other furniture, this piecewill complete the visionacross the front of the sanctuary. Anyone wishing to donate or give memorials in someone s memory for these items, please contact Father Bob. ~~~~~~~~~~ I Turn to You, O Lord, in Time of Trouble How often we mess up, get things wrong, discover that we are not perfect? St Augustine said, Do not allow yourself to be offended by the imperfect while you are striving for the perfect. That s not an excuse for not trying but a reminder that perfection is what we are aiming for and what we never achieve. In order to make progress, we need to put our failures behind us, as does the Lord who takes away the effect of our faults and remits our sin when we fail. Our God does not automatically assume that we messed up deliberately or that we are devious people but knows we are trying our best, sometimes trying so hard that it s the very effort of striving for perfection that causes us to get it wrong. 6 MEET TRENNA AND BEN NEARPASS! Trenna and Ben met while attending Billings Central in They dated through high school and college and eventually got married at St. Pats in They spent their first couple years of marriage living in Flagstaff, AZ while Trenna attended Physical Therapy school. In Arizona, Trenna and Ben tried to spend every weekend doing something new, especially if it involved going outdoors. The couple returned to Billings and were blessed to find good jobs in their home community. Ben is currently working for Stryker Orthopedics and Trenna is working as a Physical Therapist at Physical Therapy in Motion. They have also found joy in staying active in the Catholic Church community. Ben was a boy s youth group leader in Flagstaff for one year and Trenna is currently a teacher of the secondgrade sacraments class at St. Pat s and a commissioned extraordinary minister of communion for this parish. They are really looking forward to their greatest adventure yet as they are expecting their first son in May. ~~~~~~~~~~ We are too anxious, and that anxiety makes us fail. If we could be a little more relaxed, things could go better. Knowing that the Lord is on our side is tremendously reassuring and can help us to be less uptight about what we do. No wonder we can sing and You Fill Me with Joy of Salvation!

8 Dear Families of St. Patrick CoCathedral During Lent our community will participate in CRS Rice Bowl, a faithinaction program that invites us to encounter our neighbor, as companions on the journey, through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We will reflect on how an encounter with our neighbor can be transformative. We will see how our prayers, fasting and alms can support those worldwide who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities. As we prepare for this holy season, it is especially meaningful to come together in prayer as a family. Reflecting on the crosses of hunger, poverty and war carried by our brothers and sisters forced to flee their homes, we have an opportunity to also reflect on our roles in caring for them as members of our human family. Cold & Flu at Mass: What should you do? Communion from the cup Please use common sense about choosing to take communion from the cup if you have lu or cold symptoms. As always, if not receiving the Precious Blood, simply reverence the cup before passing by. DO NOT take the cup and elevate it. Only the priest does that during the consecration. Sign of Peace We can exchange nods and with a smile say Peace be with you rather than shake hands to offer a sign of peace. Eat nutritious food Eating food high in nutritional value will feed your body the vitamins, rich carbohydrates and fats that give you the nourishment you need to recover more quickly. While, it may be tempting to eat more food in winter, it is better to eat a wellbalanced diet throughout the year. Try to include foods in your diet that are: high in antioxidants, protein and iberhigh in vitamins B, C, D and Elow in sugars and fats. Eat healthier this winter and try some of our nutrient packedrecipes. 8

To help with Children s Liturgy of the Word. Volunteer one Sunday a month at the 10:30 a.m. Mass to help our children break open the word of God in ways they can understand! This is an approximately 20 minute commitment one Sunday each month (when you are here, anyway!). Volunteers will receive training and the reward of relationships with our youngest parish members! 10 SPY NEWS The Religious Education and Youth Ministry Programs had a busy week the last week of January and the irst weekend of February! The middle school youth group attended a citywide worship and praise service at St. Bernard on Tuesday, January 30, and there was good attendance for the games and music. Then, on Wednesday, many of our high schoolers rode the bus to St. Bernard for a similar evening with David Casey (a youth minister & musician from Helena). Then it was all about getting ready for the Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday night! The youth were the hosts and hostesses for this event, seating people and serving them at their tables. Over 120 plates of Spaghetti, salad and desserts left the kitchen, so we had a great crowd. Special thanks to Liz May, who did the decorating and organized the games, to Barbara Depner who organized the seating chart and the youth workers, to Jason and Mindy Davidson, who did the cooking, to the Ladies Auxiliary, who helped with set up and clean up, and to the many parents who also provided their assistance. Thank you, too, to Stella s who provided amazing meat sauce and browniesand to all the parishioners who support our youth programs!
