3 The Holy Family "When they had fulilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned... to their own town of Nazareth." Mary and Joseph were faithful Jews who followed the norms of their religion. Today's Gospel describes the event we call "The Presentation." Jesus' parents, like every Jewish family, presented their infant son to the Lord in a formal ceremony at the temple in Jerusalem. Having done what their religious rites required (and having heard the prophetic words of Simeon and Anna), Mary and Joseph returned home. It was back in their native region of Galilee, amidst the daily routine of domestic life, that Jesus "grew and became strong, illed with wisdom." As Christians, we too consecrate our children to the Lord when we have them baptized in the Church. Seeing our children receive this sacrament of initiation is always a moment of great joy and hope as we anticipate the life that lies ahead for them, both on earth and in eternity. But the baptism of a baby is only the beginning of this journey towards heaven. In truth, the little daily details, the simple living of family life in our own home paves the way for our children to reach their eternal home. And so it was with the Holy Family. Jesus' childhood, his formation and development took place not primarily amidst the public drama of the temple, but in the quiet privacy of his home. How important this home was, where his parents raised him in their faith and helped him live in such a way that "the favor of God was upon him." May we too, in our homes and our families, remember that although our mission may be lived out in very small moments, taken together they have an eternal signiicance. Mary embodies courage. Joseph is generous, a just and honorable man. He is not unafraid to step outside normal boundaries and trust in God s goodness even when leeing for their lives.

Giving birth to Jesus, with all its potential problems in a situation far removed from the security of her own family shows a determination to see things through no matter what people might say. After their return to Nazareth, the adolescent Jesus goes missing For several days, causing much grief. There are challenges, dificulties, tense moments, and opportunities for misunderstanding. Welcome to real family life. This feast calls us to look beyond family problems and focus on the power of love to change and transform. Love binds us togetherforgiveness and understanding ties the knot. Be Safe on Ice To prevent falls, it is important to be constantly aware of the dangers of ice and slippery surfaces in the winter. First, wear shoes or boots that are made of nonslip rubber or neoprene with grooved soles. Point your feet slightly out (like a penguin!) Extend your arms out to your sides to maintain balance. Take short steps or shufle for stability. Wear a heavy, bulky coat to cushion you if you should fall. Try to avoid landing on your knees, wrists, or spine. Try to relax your muscles if you fall; this can minimize injuries. There is a great opportunity coming up with the New Year. Our Sunday Visitor is hosng a webinar series called Loaves + Fishes. It will be offered live monthly on the second Tuesday of every month and a recording of the webinar will be available the following day. You must preregister for this event. The theme of the webinar is on Stewardship, so it fits very well with our diocesan priories. One very important piece of informaon pertaining to the webinar is that it is free of charge to parishes and parishioners given that it is funded via the Catholic Communicaons Campaign.
