2 From Jan ENTER THE JOURNEY CARRY THE CROSS The image of the cross has evolved from a simple X to the more familiar tform without a corpus in prechristian and early Christian times, to displaying a corpus beginning about the sixth century, to the thorncrowned, broken Jesus of Oberammargau, to the thousands of variations found in churches, museums, and personal collections. Essential to our understanding of the cross is John s explanation of the cross and Jesus in today s Gospel. 3 4th Sunday of Lent Why is the world the way it is? We all wonder that from time to time. Each successive generation projects rosehued longing on the past and casts furtive glances at the impending future. We see forces beyond our control in nature and in the newspaper. The world is changing and we're being pulled out with the tide. GOSPEL MEDITATION In the face of this confusion, today's Gospel features one of the most oftquoted Scripture verses of all time: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life." But if Christ has come, why is the world so challenging? Why is the world still to our eyes being carried off in a proverbial hand basket? Jesus' response is a deeply personal one. "This is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light." Patterns arise, habits are formed, and systems become engrained, but each is the result of an interconnected web of human choices. Where do we stand? Our answers, perhaps, vary from week to week, hour to hour, missed trafic light to spilled coffee to teenage child's rebellion. The world isn't perfect because we aren't perfect. Our parish is lawed because we're lawed. Our families need work because every one of us needs to be converted. Christianity is a process, not a destination! This Sunday, Jesus invites us to consider our own lives. Where in our own lives do we prefer darkness to light? What laws are we trying to hide? Humbly acknowledge those places today. Ask God for the grace to be transformed. Share with your spouse or a friend where you'd like to improve this week. "Whoever loves truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God." I recognize that my charity is so desperately needed because there s so little justice in the world. I know the world is fractured by sin, and I cannot create a perfect world...but surely I can do something to help create a better one. So I am asked during Lent to prayerfully cross the bridge from charity to justice. This is a hard bridge for me to cross. I d much rather deal directly with the poor people who are a part of my life or whom I hear about because of special needs. But I need to cross that bridge and try to address society s system and structures at least to get the poor placed higher on our local and national agendas. I can write, for example, to a local, national of world leader expressing my belief that the needs of the poor be considered irst when laws, policies, regulations, agreements and treaties are enacted. I m not talking about a nasty letter or oversimpliied solutions. I can let leaders know that I am praying fasting and giving alms this Lent with the poor in mind. I want our leaders to make the needs of the poor urgent and important as they carry out their responsibilities. It s worth dong. It s the long haul that counts. 6 SPY NEWS Last week was a busy week for religious education and youth ministry. The PreK/ Kindergarten children spent part of their Wednesday evening learning about being happy and safe, and about Super Helper, a special friend who wants to help them be happy and safe. Each child then got his or her own Super Helper cape and mask, so each of them can also help other children feel happy and safe! In addition to regular youth group on Wednesday night, high schoolers and middle schoolers participated in the annual lockin. Activities included singing (and dancing) by the bonires outside, a bungee cord challenge inside as well as other games, movies, and not much sleep! Breakfast was served on Saturday Morning before the youth went home to take much needed naps!
