2 From Jan UNLESS A GRAIN OF WHEAT In today s Gospel, when the two Greeks inally meet Jesus, he launches into a description of a grain of wheat dying and producing fruit, losing your life in order to preserve it, and following Jesus lead. As baptized into Christ s dying and rising, our own participation in this paschal mystery follows the same pattern, however, unlike that grain of wheat, we must knowingly and willingly choose to fall into the earth and die. What does this mean? It means becoming, like the grain of wheat, buried. It means falling into the ground, being nourished in the soil of God s Word and grace in order to die from judgmental thoughts, gossip, negativity, anger, hostility, bitterness, selishness, selfpity, resentment, jealousy, contempt and pride in order that our seed germinates to bear fruits of positive afirmation, optimism, hope, patience, compassion, joy, gratitude, respect, love, selfcontrol, humility, and service. Only by dying to ourselves, and living out our baptismal call can we share in Christ s glory. We don't know if the Greeks mentioned here heard of Jesus from fellow travelers or if news of this intriguing rabbi had reached all the way to their home.

The time has come for the message to move beyond the geographic bounds of Israel. But what does this message require? The Gospel is clear: "he said this indicating the kind of death he would die.

3 GOSPEL MEDITATION 5th Sunday of Lent "Now there were some Greeks among those who had come to worship at the feast. They came to Philip and asked him, 'Sir, we would like to see Jesus.'" It has begun. News of Jesus has spread beyond nativeborn, Aramaicspeaking Jews. We don't know if the Greeks mentioned here heard of Jesus from fellow travelers or if news of this intriguing rabbi had reached all the way to their home. What we do now is that this interaction spurred an interesting comment from Jesus: "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be gloriied." In other words, it has begun. The time has come for the message to move beyond the geographic bounds of Israel. But what does this message require? The Gospel is clear: "he said this indicating the kind of death he would die." A grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies to its life as only a seed. A caterpillar takes on the appearance of temporary death in order to transform into a butterly. In the Gospels, sacriice and death are a way of becoming something more than you were before. This Lent, new life can come from our sacriices. When we enter into the season with Jesus, our dificulties can transform our perspective. "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit." As we abstain from meat and fast from eating between meals, we can grow in compassion for the hungry. We can give alms of our time, sacriicially spending time with the lonely, the sick, and the marginalized. Our little Lenten "deaths" death to unnecessary preferences, death to selish living, death to ignorance of other's pain can bring new life to the world long after the season is over. This is the invitation this Sunday and every Lenten season, to begin anew from death to life. 6 SPY NEWS Pete the Protestant (AKA Greg Contreraz) visited youth group last Wednesday night to challenge the youth to demonstrate (with humility and respect) their understanding of what our church teaches about Mary. It was a lively discussion, and the youth came prepared with books about Marian Doctine, books about apologetics and Bibles. They know their stuff, and if they had questions about how to answer some of Pete s objections, they knew right where to look to ind the information! Several of them had spent the week studying so they were prepared for Pete (AKA Greg) who is actually a Catholic! The irst & second graders completed Safe & Sacred training this week, and all grades are focused on the Lenten season and being the best they can be to project the great love God has for us! 2018 Her Pondering Heart Calling All Women!
