Or maybe people were captivated by the Baptist's remarkable humility in the face of such huge popularity"i am not worthy.

They were lining up for baptism. And they were acknowledging their sins at the same time. John was proclaiming "a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

And the crowds were anxious to do so in order to "prepare the way of the Lord.

What was the attraction? Was it his unusual appearanceclothed in camel's hair? Perhaps it was his bizarre eating habits feeding on locusts and wild honey. Or maybe people were captivated by the Baptist's remarkable humility in the face of such huge popularity"i am not worthy." Unlike our modern fascination with standing in the presence of superstars, the crowds who locked to John weren't looking for a thrill. They weren't lining up for autographs. They were lining up for baptism. And they were acknowledging their sins at the same time. John was proclaiming "a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins." And people came because they were longing to experience the freedom of that forgiveness. John called them to conversion. To convert means to turn, in this case to turn away from sin. And the crowds were anxious to do so in order to "prepare the way of the Lord." For these irstcentury Jews, the imminent approach of the Messiah came with a call for conversion and they took this call very seriously. Now, for us, as twentyirst century Christians, the Church, like John the Baptist, calls us to prepare and repent during this season of Advent. Will we take the call seriously? Will we examine the areas of our lives that need to change? Will we pray for God's help to overcome our habitual sin and to make choices based on generosity instead of selishness? Now is the time to heed the message. Now is the time to "prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." Using the thoughts and ideas I ve read as a basis for my prayers, I can ask for God s help to see how he is breaking into my life, and pray for others who need his help and healing at this time of year. I also like to use this Prayer for Embracing the Wait and Patience of Advent to help express my thoughts. National Handwashing awareness week National Handwashing Awareness Week reminds us that the risk of infection is everpresent, especially around the holidays. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), washing with soap and water is the best way to reduce the number of microbes on your hands. If soap and water are not available, use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. Let s take a little review of the Principles of Hand Hygiene that are endorsed by the American Medical Association: Wash your hands when they are dirty and before eating; Do not cough into your hands; Do not sneeze into your hands; Above all, do not put your hands into your eyes, ears, and mouth.

In this year of 2017, who are our present day prophets of hope in times of despair, darkness and derision?

Prophets in the Old Testament held out hope for the people of Israel by describing what the world would be like when the Messiah came. Today and next Sunday the central igure of the Gospel stories is John the Baptist. John the Baptist, a New Testament prophet was not afraid to criticize the culture of his day. Christ said, Amen I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist. Yet with all his gifts and holiness, John remained small so that the focus would be on Christ, the prophet of hope. In this year of 2017, who are our present day prophets of hope in times of despair, darkness and derision? Man can life forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight months without air, but only one second without hope. Connect our youth and their families with reputable Catholic news sources. Our Religious Education children had a great time exploring our Advent Learning Centers last week. Learning about the different names for Jesus, about St. Mary and St. Joseph and our liturgical calendar, they also had the opportunity to make Jesse Tree ornaments for our Advent Giving Tree as well as Christmas cards for family members and the homebound in our parish. Thanks to the catechists and the many high school and middle school youth group kiddos who were there to help. We had an awesome time and the younger children got to learn about things they wouldn t necessarily have had the opportunity to learn about during a regular class nightpreparing the way for Jesus!
