If I am truly in love with God there is no need to compare myself with others or succumb to jealousy if others appear closer than I or because I have loved longer. Authentic love does not consider beneits or privileges. It simply desires to be in the presence of the One who is loved. God invites all of his children into a relationship with him. It does not matter when along our life's journey we accept that invitation. It is only important that we do. In our Gospel today, the owner of the vineyard promised the usual daily wage to everyone, regardless of what time each started working. GOSPEL MEDITATION 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Are you envious because I am generous?" The landowner in today's Gospel parable surprised everyone.

Of course this was a very pleasant surprise for those who had begun their job late in the day. And, understandably, it was something of a disappointment for those who had toiled since the morning.

3 GOSPEL MEDITATION 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Are you envious because I am generous?" The landowner in today's Gospel parable surprised everyone. Contrary to standard practice, he paid all of his laborers the same wage, regardless of how many hours they had worked! Of course this was a very pleasant surprise for those who had begun their job late in the day. And, understandably, it was something of a disappointment for those who had toiled since the morning. From their perspective, they should have gotten more than the others. But in fact the landowner was not cheating anyone; he was simply being especially generous with the latecomers. This story would have had a special meaning for the Jewish audience listening to Jesus. They, the Chosen People, were the laborers who had started at 9:00 am. They belonged to the group with a long history of worshipping the true God. NonJewish Gentiles, on the other hand, had appeared late in the game. Jesus was making the point that just because he would offer the same salvation and mercy to everyone, there should be no reason for the Jews to complain. They had received their promised Messiah; so what if, in God's mercy, he allowed others who had not waited so long to be saved as well? Divine generosity is not meant to be a cause for jealousy. Now, we may feel removed from the concerns of those Jews. But the basic lesson remains relevant: that we ought to appreciate God's generosity, even when it reaches to those whom we may not expect God to forgive. Those who have long been faithful, for example, might think they deserve more beneits than sinners who repent late in life. But instead, we should all rejoice to see God's mercy extended to EVERYONE, no matter when they joined the fold. Today we hear the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard. In today s economic culture, we may ind this parable rather disconcerting. We need to look at the parable from the perspective of the work in the vineyard rather than from the point of view of supposed injustice of same wages for different hours of work. How pleased God is when we answer his call to go into the vineyard at whatever hour! In the coming weeks we are being called to work in the vineyard of various ministries at St. Patrick. This weekend we are focusing on the ministries of the Parish Council, Funeral Luncheons, Bus Driving, Communion to the Homebound and to the Sick. Please consider these and other ministries. Yearly collection for the Crisis Center The Crisis Center bridges the health care gap for individuals who need access to integrated mental health, chemical dependency and social services. Because of this service the emergency care at the hospitals and incarcerations at the Yellowstone County Detention Facility has been reduced. No one has been denied services due to the inability to pay. As a Catholic community our donations will assist the center with their daily needs for this identiied group. Identiied needs for the center: Powdered Gatorade; Non perishable snacks; art supplies that are not sharp; glue, glitter, paints of any kind, acrylic or watercolors, chalk, art; paper, ect. We did change to a two year sacrament class attendance for sacraments for those children entering into irst grade for this year. This fall we will begin the two year requirement program for the reception of irst communion and conirmation. The reasons for this are multifold, but certainly it is primarily that they have the opportunity to prepare with their peers, whether from the Catholic schools, our home schools and our parishes, the opportunity to get to know each other, to learn about the Sacraments of Initiation in a common classroom.
