3 GOSPEL MEDITATION 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." This is a fascinating promise. Jesus enlightens us today about the power of communal faith. He emphasizes that a gathering of likeminded believers, small though it may be, has a powerful effect. As he tells his disciples, "If two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father." Alright then, what are we waiting for? We should take Jesus up on this amazing offer! Going to Mass is one way to do so. When we gather together every Sunday, we do more than listen to readings and receive the Eucharist. We also PRAY together. The priest leads us in these prayers, of course, but we are meant to join with him, as the Second Vatican Council put it, with "fully conscious, and active participation" (Sacrosanctum Concilium, #14). We are to make the prayers our own by attentively joining in with them from our hearts. Mindlessly reciting "Amen" or absently whispering the words of the Our Father likely loses the effect Jesus was talking about in today's Gospel. But truly praying together with our parish community certainly its the bill. We need not be at church to fulill this kind of prayer, however. It only takes two! Those of us who live with others can exercise communal prayer every day in our own homes, just by joining each other for a few moments of petition or praise. Those who live alone may need to reach out more deliberately, but it only takes a phone call to "gather together" with another believer and offer up our prayers. May we have the courage to invite others to join us as we bring our needs to God. September is Healthy Aging Month As we continue our focus on Healthy Aging, here are other considerations Have negative friends who complain all of the time and constantly talk about how awful everything is?drop them. As cruel as that may sound, distance yourself from people who do not have a positive outlook on life. They will only depress you and stop you from moving forward. Surround yourself withenergetic, happy, positive people of all ages and you will be happier too. (Tip: Smile often. It s contagious and wards off naysayers.) Walk like a vibrant, healthy person. Come on. You can probably do it. Analyze your gait. Do you walkslowly because you have just become lazy or, perhaps, have a fear of falling? (Tip: Make a consciouseffort to take big strides, walk with your heel irst, and wear comfortable shoes.) When the Psalmist composed Psalm 95, centuries before anyone dreamed of all the distractions of our modern age, even then there was probably skepticism about whether Godreallyspoke to anyone. But the Psalmist hoped that people would hear and would not harden their hearts, just as the text that he or she wrote begs us today. Communicating with God is a twoway street. Do we listen for what God might be telling us, or are we so busy articulating our own need that we can t hear God s answer? Do we want to hear God s truth, or are we hardening our hearts to the point that we hear only what we want to hear? If we don t take the time to listen to even the softest voice talking to us through the Holy Spirit, or if we're not listening because we've already shaped the answer we want, then we ve hardened our hearts. Listen to God s voice and consider sharing your gifts by participating in the various ministries at St. Patrick. This week consider the ministries of youth ministry, religious education and RCIA. Lord, help us to always listen to your voice and respond as you would have us do. True ministry doesn t just build community, it forms it. 5 Meet Ed Longo! Ed represented St. Patrick CoCathedral at the National Association of Pastoral Musicians 40th Annual Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, July He is our accompanist at the 10:30 Sunday liturgy. My week at NPM was a life changing experience. I never imagined the depth and diversity of liturgical music, and the warmth and welcoming environment in which it was shared with me. We were exposed to everything from Gregorian chants to modern AfroCuban psalms, and I can t wait to share it with everyone. I ve been a member of St. Pat s for over 15 years now and am overjoyed to participate in the music and accompaniment each week. Learning to play the organ and occasionally sharing my guitar with you all has been a wonderful experience. ~~~~~~~~~~~ The liturgy is the voice of Christ speaking and singing to the Father in the Spirit. Liturgical song brings us into communion with others. We share words, notes, a sense of common purpose and support.

All Ministers of Holy Communion (including those who serve at weekday and weekend Masses, to the homebound and in the hospital) Diocesan Revised Policy From Bishop Warfel: it is required that all Extraordinary Ministers of Communion receive formation and training. Following training, the parish is to provide the names of those designated as such after which the Bishop will provide a certificate allowing them to serve for a three year period. Those age 16 or above and fully initiated can serve as ministers of communion. There will be a potluck gathering for all who serve as ministers of communion to the homebound, hospital and at weekday and weekend liturgies, Tuesday, September 26 at 5:30 pm. in the social center. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What is a Synodal Church? Marking the 50th anniversary of the Synod of Bishops, in 2015, Pope Francis outlined his vision for a church that is "synodal" at every level, with everyone listening to one another, learning from one another and taking responsibility for proclaiming the Gospel. "A synodal church is a listening church, aware that listening is more than hearing. It is a reciprocal listening in which each one has something to learn." It s fall, school has started, and a new year for St. Patrick s Religious Education and Youth Ministry Programs begins on Wednesday, September 13 th!
