He became frightened at how strong the wind was and began to sink. He took his focus off of Jesus and allowed his fears to get the best of him. Fear often gets the best of us and cripples us. We sink. Many of our actions and thoughts are motivated by fear. Think of how many opportunities you have missed because of fear. 3 GOSPEL MEDITATION 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time "During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea." The disciples weren't prepared to see Jesus walking on water. They had already witnessed plenty of miracles at the hands of their teacher; only hours earlier he had been curing the sick, and had multiplied ive loaves of bread and two ish into enough food to feed thousands. But this miracle was different. This one wasn't to heal anyone or provide for anyone. This miracle seemed more like a manifestation: a clear revelation of Jesus' divine power. But the disciples were slow to get the message. First, they thought they saw a ghost. Then, Peter tried to step out in faith, but he fell when the wind picked up. It wasn't until the storm ended and the disciples were safe that they made their profession of faith, "Truly, you are the Son of God." Healings, miracles, and manifestations of divinity weren't quite enough to make these men believe. The disciples' faith seems to have been dependent upon the personal experience of being saved. To this point, the mighty signs and works of Christ had been done on behalf of others. They were wondrous to behold, but apparently not enough to elicit a full declaration of faith in Jesus. But when these frightened men had their fears relieved, then they were ready to believe. This is what Jesus wants to do for every one of us. He became man to save us. He died on the cross to take away our fears, to forgive our sins, and to give us eternal life. These aren't just stories about someone else's life. This is the story of our life. Like Peter, Jesus says to us, "Come." May we respond with conidence, putting our trust in the One who has the power to calm the storms in our lives too. Twelve Step Program St. Patrick CoCathedral will be offering a Twelve Step Program to aid divorced Catholics in their recovery from the "treacherous terrain of divorce". This program has been authorized and approved by Bishop Michael Warfel and by the Director of the Marriage Tribunal. This is a faithbased program open to all divorced Catholics as well as other denominations. All classes will be held on Thursday evening, at St. Patrick Co Cathedral. Preregistration is required. 5 Community The Lodgepole Complex wildire in eastern Montana has burned over 220,000 acres. The group of four ires, referred to as the Lodgepole Complex of ires covers area 40 miles by 20 miles. The incident management team Monday morning classiied the four ires as a megaires" (exceeds 100,000 acres). Judging from news reports, there have been farmers and ranchers seriously impacted by the ires with the loss of grazing land, hay, cattle, crops on farm land and buildings. Ihave invited parishes of the Diocese to provide an opportunity for parishioners to donate to relief of those negatively impacted. Of course, monies may be sent directly to the following or any of a number of groups collecting inancial assistance to those hurt by the ires. For many of us, August is a time when we are gearing up for school or fall activities at home or in the workplace. We are called to stretch and grow every day. There are always new challenges whether they are changes in staff, new technology to learn, dealing with grief or facing a family crisis. We can sustain wind and storm for a while, but at some point we are going to become overwhelmed by it all. We need to slow down, and let Jesus catch us. If we are not grounded in our faith, then all the wind and storm is for nothing. In the Gospel, we read: After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side,while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. How often do we get away to pray, to refresh, restore, reset and renew?learn to dismiss the crowds and find that place where you hear the still, small voice of God, calling you into wholeness and holiness.
