3 GOSPEL MEDITATION 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time "I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?" The parable Jesus tells today is the story of a king, but in truth it is about Jesus himself. He is the "king" who has forgiven our debts. We are the "servants" whose sins have earned us chastisement. But when we repent and ask for Christ's mercy, he grants it to us without hesitation. The point of the parable, then, is that we too should extend this mercy to others. We should not be like that "wicked servant" who begged for mercy but would not show it to others. Elsewhere, Jesus teaches us to pray, "Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors" (Mt. 6:12). We use different words, but a similar meaning when we pray the Our Father asking God to "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." But are we sure that we mean what we say? It's important to pause and evaluate how we are doing in this regard. Are we harboring any grudges? Are there people we refuse to forgive? Is there a situation where we are seeking revenge instead of extending mercy? Jesus asks us to do otherwise. He reminds us that we have already been forgiven. We are right now enjoying the beneits of his forgiveness. So we are called to bear in mind our own sins, failings, weaknesses, and "debts" when we deal with others instead of thinking that we are perfectly innocent and acting as if we've never been the beneiciary of mercy. So let us do our best to forgive as we have been forgiven. This doesn't mean approving of wrong behavior; God doesn't ask us to do that. But he does ask us to let go of bitterness and foster mercy instead. September is Healthy Aging Month Let s continue to look at thoughts that help us age more gracefully. Stand up straight! Literally, we are to echo the good news of Jesus Christ to the world. This is not a suggestion; it is a command of our Lord. Some people are called and set apart in our communities as catechists, those formally trained and charged with passing on the Gospel to children and adults, inside and outside of our communities. On Catechetical Sunday, we acknowledge them and remind ourselves of the need for formation and growth in all of us. To be a catechist is a privileged calling, and today be sure to say "thank you" to one in your community.

5 Community The Billings, MT celebration of the 400th Anniversary of Vincentian Charism will be held Sunday, September 17th at St. Pius Parish. Mass will be at 11:00 am for all Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth and Associates, living and deceased. Refreshments following in St. Pius Fellowship Hall. A St. Vincent de Paul Feast Day Mass and blessing of the building will be held Wednesday Sept 27th from 8:00 am to 9:30 am, and the ribbon cutting will be at 10:00 am. This feast day Mass will be celebrated by Fr. John Houlihan and a reception with hors d'oeuvres and celebratory cake and beverages will be served. In our Church, differences of liturgical piety have polarized celebrations of our faith. Many of us are hurt, illed with anger and resentment because of this divisive climate. How can we possibly forgive those people? C.S. Lewis wrote: Everyone says forgiveness is a lovely idea, until they have something to forgive. When we fail to forgive, we are shackled. Something or someone is living rentfree in our hearts. Therefore we cannot more forward. It has been almost a year since Pope Francis closed the Jubilee Year of Mercy. What, if anything about the Year of Mercy, stuck? Apparently, we still have a long way to go. A Year of Mercy wasn t enough. That is why Jesus calls us to forgive not seven times but seventyseven times. The goal of forgiveness is not to change the person being forgiven, but to change the heart of the one who forgives to be more like God s heartslow to anger and rich in compassion. And so we truly sing... The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger and rich in compassion. Yearly collection for the Crisis Center The Crisis Center bridges the health care gap for individuals who need access to integrated mental health, chemical dependency and social services. Because of this service the emergency care at the hospitals and incarcerations at the Yellowstone County Detention Facility has been reduced. No one has been denied services due to the inability to pay. As a Catholic community our donations will assist the center with their daily needs for this identiied group. Identiied needs for the center: Powdered Gatorade; Non perishable snacks; art supplies that are not sharp; glue, glitter, paints of any kind, acrylic or watercolors, chalk, art; paper, ect. 6 SPY NEWS We are so excited that our religious education and youth ministry programs started on September 13th, and we are so excited to have you sign up as you can. We know that sports and other activities can some times make inding the time for religious education and youth ministry dificult. Most of us have (or still are) parenting, so if this sometimes seems like just another thing you have to do, we understand. Having said that, why is it important that your children come, not just to mass but to religious education and youth group as well? 1. Our children become part of a church community. One of the single biggest protective factors for our children to lead healthy lives is that one adult, other than their parents, greets them by name. What a better place than church for that to happen? 2. We empower young people to be the disciples of Jesus Christ. Even our six year old children will come to know what it means to live the message of the gospels. 3. We help children to understand the importance of their role in the church, to think about becoming altar servers, lectors, and volunteers in each of our ministries. Those are just my top three reasons, and I could come up with 20 more. We hope that you will join us. I know we are going to have a great year! Service opportunities for youth: Friday, October 6Knights of Columbus Steak Fry. We can earn some money for youth group opportunities, plus have a steak dinner! Sign up at youth group to help out! Two year requirement for sacraments. We did change to a two year sacrament class attendance for sacraments for those children entering into irst grade for this year. This fall 2018 we will begin the two year requirement program for the reception of irst communion and conirmation. The reasons for this are multifold, but certainly it is primarily that they have the opportunity to prepare with their peers, whether from the Catholic schools, our home schools and our parishes, the opportunity to get to know each other, to learn about the Sacraments of Initiation in a common classroom.
