In the 60 s, Andy Warhol printed out his silkscreen works adopting images of Marilyn Monroe, the iconic figure of Hollywood and Campbell s soup cans, a symbol of mass production. Roy Lichtenstein directly reflects the popular culture of 60 s to art by faithfully reproducing comic strips. Thereafter, the icons familiar to the public such as Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Mouse, superheroes, McDonald s and Coca-Cola can still be found in the art of many influential contemporary artists including SEEN, Gérard Rancinan, Patrick Rubinstein, Ron English, Joe Black, David Mach and Lee Dong-Uk, over half a century. 3 Andy Warhol ( ) Born in 1928 in Pennsylvania, Andy Warhol is considered one of the most influential artist of the late 20th Century, and a figurehead of the 1960s pop art movement. He was a successful commercial artist and designer in the 1950s with New York s major fashion magazines and advertising agencies. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. 5 Roy Lichtenstein Roy Lichtenstein ( ) Born in 1923 in New York, Roy Lichtenstein was a prominent American pop art artist. He earned a master s degree in fine arts at Ohio State University and taught for 10 years. He was famous for comic documentary in 1960s. His work defined the basic premise of pop art through parody. Favoring the comic strip as his main inspiration, Lichtenstein produced a new image to represent a new formative language. 7 Mr. Brainwash ( ) Born in 1966 in France, Thierry Guetta began his career as an artist, working under the pseudonym Mr. Brainwash after immigrating to the United States. Influenced by different street artist, his cousin Invader and world renown British street artist Banksy, Guetta was able to pave his way to becoming an artist himself. 11 David Mach ( ) Born in 1956 in Methil, Scotland, David Mach began attending Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 1974 where he experimented with different techniques which he continued to develop. After graduating he received his Master s degree from the Royal College of Art, located in London. In 1988, he was nominated for the Turner Prize, and in 1998 he was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts. David Mach has used everyday, recognizable mass-produced objects in multiples by making a criticism on the overflowing media and absurdity of our society. 13 Romero Britto ( ) Born in 1963, in Brazil, Romero Britto is a self-taught artist who combines influences from cubism, pop art and graffiti into his vibrant artworks. In 1983, Britto travelled to Europe to examine firsthand the art of the masters. He decided to move to Miami in 1988 and emerged as an international artist. The following year, he was selected alongside Andy Warhol and Keith Haring for Absolut Vodka s Absolut Art campaign. Britto s pop sensibility has since driven him to many collaborations with international brands such as Audi or Disney. The New York Times describes its iconic style as combination of Matisse and Picasso s works into warmth, optimism and love. 15 Charles Jang ( ) Born in 1976 in Seoul, He did graffiti art while in college, and he was greatly influenced by street art. He has traveled to Australia, Canada, Europe, and Southeast Asia, and he was influenced by indigenous art. Charles Jang expresses famous domestic and foreign characters with his unique drawing and brilliant colors. By bringing in falling and blazing emotions, he displays the frustration, sorrow, courage, and hope that he experiences by implication in his work. Especially, the color of Robot Taekwon V resembles the Dancheong color of Korea a lot. Dancheong means a mural painting beautifully expressed in five colors on wooden buildings. It also means a mural painting or altar portrait of Buddha in Buddhist temples. His work contains our joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure. 17 Seen ( ) Born in 1961 in the Bronx, New York as Richard Richie Mirando known as Seen referred to as the Godfather of Graffiti, is one of the world s most acclaimed talents from the Street Art movement. He first started his painting art work on New York s subway in Strongly influenced by American comic book culture, Seen specifically concentrated on the hero s physical expression. 19 Patrick Rubinstein ( ) Born in 1960, Patrick Rubinstein is a contemporary French artist who previously worked in the fashion industry. Optical illusions held an important place in the family s creative output. Inspired by movement, form, structure and materials, his works are created on a concept called Opt Art (Kinetic Art). Depending on the angle from which you look at them, his artworks offer three different views, thus providing viewers with three times more emotions. Patrick Rubinstein brings to viewers the opportunity to come face to face with their beloved celebrities, where each is associated with another image creating a one of a kind optical illusion. Little by little, Patrick Rubinstein established his signature style, juxtaposing vibrant colours with black and white, and continued on his ceaseless quest to remain at the cutting edge. 20 Lee Dong-Uk ( ) Born in Gongju, South Korea, in 1981, Lee Dong-Uk grew up in an underprivileged household. He studied fine arts at Chungnam National University, graduating in He was awarded the Ahn-Gyun Fine Art Fair Award while still a student, in 2005, and his work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in Korea and abroad over the course of the past decade. Balloons serve as Lee s signature as a painter. His works feature balloons that have been arranged, resembling a pointillist painting, to depict a scene or decorative pattern. At times, Lee incorporates objects - ranging from figures to artworks to buildings - into his scenes, so that the balloons appear to be overwhelming the real world objects. Some of his images are violent, including explosions as well as plane and train crashes. 21 Xue Song ( ) Born in 1965 in China, calligraphic works and figurative paintings by the Shanghai artist Xue Song are characterized by a bold and energetic style. As a young adult in the 1980s he would have been aware of many Chinese artist desire to contribute to the regeneration of their culture. Xue Song s trademark collages represent the many different aspects of Chinese culture; for example, he incorporates traditional Chinese paintings, folk art, religious icons, legendary figures and historical photographs. Through these classic images, Xue Song makes deliberate and specific references to Chinese history, society, politics and art. The art presented by him has calligraphy as a form of abstract painting which reveal his thoughtfulness and intellect. Many of the fragments of paper in Xue Song s collages have burnt edges, a feature of his art that originates in the tragic destruction of his studio by fire several years ago. All that remained from the blaze were charred fragments of paintings and piles of ash. To cope with the pain of his loss, Xue Song retrieved these remains and pasted them onto canvas. Ever since, he has painstakingly burned the edges of the paper fragmets in his collages. 22 Xiao Bai ( ) Xiao Bai was born in France in He currently lives and works in Beijing. His iconic creation of «Mickey never down» draws inspiration from the benign and brave Mickey to unfold ideas of unfailing zeal, confidence and faith. However, to Xiao Bai, what makes his character so relatable and unique is that, like human beings, he is still vulnerable. He is put to trial by challenges, which are often disproportionately compared to his small size, in the same way that human beings strive to survive in a world of adversity that is often beyond their control. He has exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide for over twenty years, influencing a generation of artists and art lovers with his unique and newly disconcerting sensibility. A surprisingly polyvalent artist, he has worked across the visual arts spectrum, from vinyl sculpture to billboards and oil painting. 25 Joe Black ( ) Born in 1973, in the United Kingdom, Joe Black studied as a sculptor before moving on to illustration and working for many years as a successful commercial artist before becoming a full-time fine artist. Joe Black is now focused solely on his personal body of art. Combining his love of materials with his craft, skills, technique and a passion for perfection, each piece is painstakingly created using thousand upon thousand of ball bearings, plastic pins, toys, badges, Lego bricks or any other little object that Joe Black will come across and be inspired by. 26 Paul Alexis ( ) Paul Alexis is a French artist born in His artworks are a superposition of multiple painted metal sheets depicting shadows iconic figures, using an unusual technique of camera obscure to play with visual structures. Preferring to work in large formats, his works of ghostly forms engulf the viewer-until a second look reveals an icon of the past. The effect highlights the essence of historical figures whose public images have lost so much meaning with overproduction. 28 Kan ( ) Born in 1977 in the south of France, Kan was immersed by graffiti after a trip to Paris, followed by another one to Los Angeles. Moving to Paris, he joined Bom. K and the Da Mental Vaporz crew in Combining his passion for computers, video and design to traditional graffiti techniques, Kan has distorted his name a thousand ways, from throw-ups to digitalised block letters to pixel art, halftone graffiti and dripping QR codes. With the DMV crew, they embarked in the production of large-scale murals internationally. 29 Omar Ronda ( ) Omar Ronda was born in 1947 in Portula. Since an early age his passion for art and creativity was more than obvious. The result of being so involved in painting, by attending exhibitions and competitions led him, in 1968, to open a small gallery. For the next twenty years he continued to be an art dealer and his strong interest in art was the reason that made him to organize myriad of Arte Povera exhibitions. His desire to break with tradition in the history of art, gave birth, in 1988, to a movement he baptised Cracking. 32 André Monet ( ) Born in Montreal, in 1955, Monet studied graphic design at Laval University while exploring other mediums in fine art. He worked in fashion and advertisement before he dedicated himself to be a full time artist. Inspired by cinema, photography, music and literature, Monet has a natural connection and sense for the current society and his contemporaries. 36 Daniel Angeli ( ) Born in 1943 in Paris, Daniel Angeli discovered photography in the dark room of the Dalmas Agency 15 years ago. Fascinated by the stars whom images developed in the dark, he decides to meet them in reality. With his camera under his arm, he participated in many parties, met legends of the music industry, like Brel or Piaf as well as celebrities such as Onassis. In 1967, he created the Angeli Agency specialized in photographs of people and celebrities. Sometimes audacious, often stolen, he managed to display on his camera true moments of his models lives, which cost him a scandalous reputation. Nevertheless, he has always managed to remain ethical as a professional journalist. He defines himself as a witness of a time when the cult of celebrity really existed.
