ABSTRACT Psychoanalytic Understanding of Amadeus Doo-Young Cho, M.D. Peter Shaffer s Amadeus, like his other work Equus, has attracted many heated controversies in the analytic circle. This play, performed by various theatrical companies, had been long running for the past decade, and has drawn a large audience. However, in spite of the fame this play has achieved, no psychoanalytic criticism on this work has yet been attempted in Korea. So, in this article, I am trying to summarize the hitherto controversies into six generalizations, adding the author s own critical analyses into the studies on this work conducted abroad. The first interpretation is focusing on the motif of jealousy. Mozart was raised in totally different circumstances from that of Antonio Salierihis family was rich and had connections with the high societieshis father gave him private music lessons, and his musical talent was remarkable from his childhood. Salieri was jealous of fortunate and talented Mozart. Second interpretation reads this work as a man s defiance against God. In this interpretation, Salieri is compared to a Jewish Rabbi who could not but have a young man killed who thinks and talks as if he were the Son of God. Thirdly, this work can be interpreted as a record of the conflict between a father and a son. As sons, both Mozart and Salieri had serious ambivalence toward their fathers respectively. Mozart eventually compromised with his father, forgiving him and forgiven by him, whereas Salieri couldn t accomplish the compromise with his father who was symbolized as the God. The fourth interpretation deals with the psychosexual development. Mozart had a strong anality in his personality, while Salieri has a permanent fixation on orality. As a result, Mozart, who were relatively more developed, producedmany masterpieces as if he were producing excrement. Also, he could achieve genital maturity earlier than Salieri through his artistic creativity. In the fifth interpretation, which is focusing on the concepts of potency and masculinity, Mozart also excelled Salieri. Salieri led a sexually abstemious life with a frigid wife. On the contrary, Mozart had many affairs with his female students and had five children. Sixth interpretation finds in Salieri a homosexual impulse toward Mozart. Salieri 144
아마데우스의 recognized masculinity in Mozart s music, and he felt their basic similarities hidden below the apparent differences. In some respect, these two men can be regarded as twins, or a double. In this regard, it is interesting that the author Peter Shaffer himself had a twin brother, whose first name, like Salieri, was Anthony. 145
