6 http://news.hdec.kr Focus 2011년 1월 28일 금요일 제196호 Focus 2011년 1월 28일 금요일 제196호 기타와 아내, 내 인생 2막의 오아시스 http://news.hdec.kr 7 사우들의 한 마디 해외영업부 정 준 호 과장 >>> 현대건설 임원에서 기타장인으로 변신한 최동수 OB선배님을 만나다 순수한 열정과 집념 하나로 인생의 쓰고 매운 맛을 단맛 나는 세상으로 바꿔 버린 이 사람. 17년 전 현대건설의 촉망 시 가장 기억에 남았던 에피소드가 무엇인지 궁금하다고 했다. 1978년부터 83년까지 알코바주택공사 현장에서 근무했는데 그곳에 설치될 그네 때문에 승인이 안 나 애를 먹었던 때가 있었 어요. 주택성 장관인 왕자가 그네는 자칫 아이들에게 위험할 수 있다며 발주 승인을 거부했던 탓이었죠. 그날로 무작정 주택성에 찾아 가서 문제의 그네를 청사 앞마당에 설치해 놓고 왕자를 기다 렸어요. 그네가 위험하다는 당신의 말에 전적으로 동의한다. 그 러나 아이들이 그런 잠재적인 위험(Potential risk)을 극복함으로 써 훗날 당신처럼 훌륭한 인물로 자라날 수 있을 것이다 는 내용 으로 그를 설득했죠. 당시 제가 제출한 보고서에는 사우디 국왕의 Excellent! 라는 친필 사인이 들어가 있어요. 그 후 공사가 순조 롭게 진행될 수 있었음은 물론이고요(웃음). 받는 임원에서 기타와 아내 로 인생 2막을 시작한 최동수(72) 이사의 삶을 촘촘히 들여다보노라면 어느 샌가 그 엉 뚱하고도 유쾌한 세계에 빠져들어 입가 가득 미소를 머금게 된다. 지난 1월 19일, 이 특별한 OB를 만나고 싶다는 우 리 회사 사우 네 명과 함께 경기도 일산에 있는 그의 자택을 찾았다. 해가 뉘엿뉘엿 저물 무렵까지 대화는 계속됐고, 인생과 행복에 대한 칠순 노장의 지혜는 훈장처럼 값지게 빛났다. 글 = 태윤희 / 사진 = 이혜림 나의 반쪽, 나의 아내 들 자이크 무늬를 만 나무 조각들로 모 은 작 장 의 른 개 다 남 여 00 는 40 기타에 이사가 제작하는 어내는 등 최동수 어 있다. 인정신이 스며들 세계 곳 곳을 여 행하면서 (古) 기타 수집한 들. 고 왼쪽부터 복지후생부 이규헌 사원, 해외영업부 정준호 과장, 최동수 이사, 허숭실 사모, 고객만족부 강북사무소 조성윤 사원, 구매실 정형근 대리. 건설사 임원에서 유명 기타제작가로 경. 기타공방의 풍 다들 머리가 어떻게 된 거 아니냐고 했죠. 박재면 당시 현대건 설 회장님께서는 자네 지금 제 정신인가 하고 집게손가락을 당 신 머리에 대고 뱅뱅 돌리셨어요(웃음). 때는 바야흐로 17년 전인 1994년, 최동수 이사는 신년하례식이 끝난 직후 이제 기타를 만들려고 합니다 라는 사직의 변(辯)과 함께 31년간 청춘을 바쳐 일했던 회사를 떠나올 당시의 상황을 이 렇게 회고했다. 바레인 사우디아라비아 카타르 이라크 인 도 등 중동 건설 현장에서 꼬박 18년을 보낸 그가 쉰다섯이란 나 이에 불현듯 기타제작가가 되겠다고 퇴직을 선언했으니, 주변 사 람들의 그와 같은 반응은 어쩌면 당연한 결과였을 터. 이날 인터뷰를 위해 자리를 함께한 해외영업부 정준호 과장과 구매실 정형근 대리, 고객만족부 강북사무소의 조성윤 사원, 복지 후생부 이규헌 사원의 눈빛은 사뭇 진지했다. 이들은 모두 음악에 조예가 깊은 우리 회사 각 사업본부의 직원들로, 기타제작가로의 변신에 성공한 최동수 이사의 경험담을 듣고 인생 선배로서의 조 언을 구하기 위해 한자리에 모인 것이다. 사실 기타도 기타지만 더 중요한 건 아내 때문이었어요. 사직서 를 내기 직전인 1993년, 당시 싱가포르에서 국제회의 전시장 선텍 시티(Suntec city) 건설 현장을 맡고 있었는데 어느 날 아내가 유방 1 기타 이야기만 나오면 어린아이처럼 눈이 반짝반짝 빛나던 최동수 이사. 2 최동수 이사와 허숭실 사모의 모습. 최 이사가 직접 설계해 지은 3층짜리 집 동인재(東仁齋) 에서 두 처남네 가족들과 함께 한 지붕 아래 오순도순 지내고 있 다. 3 이날 인터뷰에 참석한 사우들은 최동수 이사가 제작한 기타에 직접 기념 사인을 할 수 있는 영광을 얻기도 했다. 4 기타 제작과정을 설명하고 있는 최동수 이사. 5 집 지하에 마련된 콘서트 홀. 이곳에서 정기적으로 가족과 지인들의 음악회가 열린다. 1 2 3 4 암 2기를 선고받았지요. 얼마 뒤 아내는 수술대에 누웠고, 가슴 하나 를 잃어야 했어요. 그때 결심했죠. 남은 평생, 일 때문에 미뤄 뒀던 오랜 취미 생활에 몰두하며 아내와 함께 즐겁게 살다 가겠다고요. 집을 짓듯 기타 짓는 사나이 최동수 이사는 현재 클래식 기타 마니아들 사이에서는 이미 유 명세를 치르고 있는 기타장인으로 통한다. 일반 사람들은 미처 감 지하지 못하는 미세한 부분까지도 소홀히 하는 법이 없는 까닭에 그가 만드는 기타는 1년에 2대뿐. 그간 서정실, 변보경, 배장흠 같 은 유명 기타리스트들에게 악기를 헌정했고, 원칙적으로는 개인 소장을 위해 기타를 만들지만 때때로 마니아들의 주문제작도 받 고 있다. 기타에 대한 순수한 열정이, 어느새 그를 명장의 반열에 올려놓은 셈이다. 수제 악기란 건 완벽한 설계를 갖추고서 시작하는 게 아니라 계속 두들겨(Tapping)보고 어떻게 만들까를 구상하면서 완성해 가야 해요. 이 기타는 4000여 개의 작은 나무 조각들로 모자이크 무늬를 직조해 낸 것인데, 측판도 2벌이나 만들어 놓고 전면판과 뒷판은 3벌씩 만들어 두었지요. 말하자면 조립될 부품들을 여러 가지로 준비해 놓고 매일 연구에 골몰하는 거예요. 완성되려면 처 음부터 끝날 때까지 필연적으로 시행착오를 거치기 마련이지요. 5 어려서부터 눈썰미 있고 손재주 좋았던 최동수 이사는 소리 좋은 기타 를 갖기 위해 고교시절부터 오동나무 서랍장으로 기타 를 만들거나 뒤꼍에 걸린 체를 잘라 벤조형 기타를 만들곤 했다. 그는 그때부터 언젠가 기타를 만들겠다 는 생각을 키워 갔고, 현 대건설 재직시절에도 해외 출장을 가면 잊지 않고 기타 공방에 들 러 공구와 재료를 사 모았다. 퇴직 후에는 기타를 제대로 만들고 싶다는 생각에 스페인 꼬르도바에서 열린 국제기타페스티벌에 참가해 기타 제작 과정을 수료했고, 미국 힐즈버그 아메리칸 기타 스쿨에서 단기 코스를 밟기도 했다. 기타를 만드는 데 있어 가장 중요한 건 처음부터 끝까지 소리 에요. 아무리 예쁜 미인도 일을 잘 해야지, 아, 예쁘다 는 반응은 3초면 끝나거든요. 저는 아티스트(예술가)가 아니라 아르티장(장 인)이다 보니 기능에 더 예민할 수밖에 없지요. 집 짓는 거나 기타 만드는 거나 마찬가지에요. 둘 다 구조의 설계나 미학적 판단 등 이 필요한 종합 예술이라는 점에서 말이죠(웃음). 하면 된다, 할 수 있다, 해보자 정신으로 이날 참석자들은 최동수 이사에게 음악, 회사생활, 인생, 행복 등 다양한 주제에 대해 질문을 던졌다. 특히 이들이 큰 관심을 가 지고 있었던 부분은 일과 취미의 균형 잡기. 앞으로는 삶이 100 세까지 연장되는 시대가 온다고 하는데 이를 위해 우리가 어떤 것 들을 준비해야 하는지, 어떤 마음가짐을 가져야 하는지 인생을 먼 저 경험한 대선배에게서 진솔한 조언을 듣고 싶다 했다. 나는 실패를 밥 먹듯이 하지만 후회란 내 사전에 없어요. 뭔가 좋지 않은 일이 있어도 금방 잊어버리지 그것 때문에 아등바등하 지 않지요. 이모작 인생은 경쟁심리에서 벗어나 마음을 비우는 게 첫째인 것 같아요. 주어진 걸로 만족하고, 내가 완전히 미쳐서 할 수 있는 일에 매달리다 보면 하나님이 이럭저럭 먹고 살게 해 주 시더라고요(웃음). 그러나 사회생활을 할 때는 기본적으로 자기 분야에 무지하게 실력이 있어야 하고, 또 남보다 하나 앞서가는 능력을 반드시 개발해야 합니다. 특히 우리 현대건설에서는 누군 가가 뭔가를 해달라고 할 때 4시간 만에 해 주겠지, 하고 기대하는 걸 2시간 안에 해결해 줄 수 있어야 해요. 또한 故 정주영 명예회 장님께서 늘 강조하셨던 하면 된다, 할 수 있다, 해보자 정신도 잊지 마시고요.(웃음). 한편 고객만족부 강북사무소의 조성윤 사원은 해외현장근무 당 대부분의 이름난 예술가들이 훌륭한 조력자의 도움을 얻어 그 의 뛰어난 기지를 세상에 널리 알리게 되는 것처럼 최동수 이사가 기타제작가로 성공을 거두기까지는 그의 정신적인 지주, 허숭실 사모(70)의 적극적인 내조가 있었기에 가능한 일이었다. 특히 퇴 직을 결심하고 본격적으로 기타 만드는 일에 착수하기까지, 아내 의 전폭적인 지원은 그의 결심에 엔진을 달아 줬던 셈. 그때 계산해 보니 3억이면 평생을 살 수 있을 것 같더라고요. 설마 우리가 15년을 더 살겠어? 하고 나름대로 계획을 세웠던 셈 인데, 저희는 진짜 지금쯤이면 벌써 죽고 없을 줄 알았어요.(웃 음) 아내와 제가 이따금씩 이렇게 얘기하죠. 우린 진짜 그런 면에 서 바보들의 행진 을 하고 있는 거라고요(웃음). 지금으로부터 50여 년 전, 제천에서 열린 친구의 결혼식에서 처음 만나 결혼까지 이르게 된 두 사람을 이어주는 연결고리 역 시 다름 아닌 기타다. 현재 수필가로 활동 중인 허숭실 사모는 대 학에서 불문학을 전공하고 여류소설가를 꿈꿨던, 자유연애를 지 향하는 철저한 독신주의자였고 최 이사는 그런 그녀의 마음을 돌리기 위해 갖은 정성을 다하는 다소 엉뚱하지만 순수한 학생 이었던 것. 허숭실 사모는 독신으로 살겠다던 자신의 소신을 접 고 최동수 이사와의 결혼을 결심하게 된 결정적인 사건에 대해 천천히 말을 이어갔다. 하루는 덕수궁 후원을 걸으면서 데이트를 하는데 대뜸 나한테 한 가지 고백할 게 있다고 해요. 당신하고 데이트를 하느라고 애 인을 돌보지 않아 내 애인이 병이 들었다. 그래서 가슴이 무척 아 프다. 오늘 그 애인을 소개하려 한다 는 말에 가슴이 철렁 내려앉 았죠. 그때는 최 이사의 끈질긴 구애에 못 이겨 나름 진지하게 그 와의 결혼을 고려해 보는 중이었거든요. 애써 태연한 척하며 그 애인을 만나고 싶다고 하니 등 뒤에 맸던 자주색 우단 자루에서 기타를 꺼내 이리저리 쓰다듬으면서 이게 내 애인 이라고 하더 라고요. 저와의 데이트 자금을 마련하느라 그 애인을 전당포에 잡 혀 두었더니 추위와 건조한 날씨에 나무가 뒤틀리고 갈라졌다며 속상해하는 모습을 보고 처음엔 좀 당황했지만 좀 엉뚱하지만 굉장히 순수하고 또 현실 타계도 할 줄 아는 사람이구나. 이렇게 순수한 사람이면 가난하게 살아도 행복하겠다 는 생각이 들었어 요. 결국 이 사람에게 반하게 된 결정적인 이유는 바로 이 기타 때 문이라고 해도 과언이 아니지요(웃음). 개인적으로 음악에 조예가 깊거나 이 방면에 관심이 많은 건 아니지만 모 일간지에 난 선배님의 기사를 읽고 큰 감동을 받아 이번 인터뷰 동행에 첫 번째로 자원하게 됐습니다. 친구처 럼, 연인처럼, 알콩달콩 사이좋게 지 내시는 두 분의 모습이 어찌나 부럽고 보기 좋았던지요!(웃 음) 저도 두 분의 모습처럼 매일 매일을 즐겁고 힘차게 살아가 고 싶습니다. 구매실 정 형 근 대리 >>> 저 역시 음악에 관심이 많아 어려 서부터 피아노 연주를 즐겼고, 대학시 절 학교밴드에서 키보드 주자로 활동 했었는데 선배님처럼 본격적으로 취 미생활에 몰두하거나 진로를 바꿔보 겠다는 여유를 가지지 못해 본 터라 부러운 마음이 가장 컸습니다. 또 과거가 아닌 지금이 가장 행복하다 고 하시는 두 분의 말씀 또한 제게 긴 여운으로 남았 고요. 주어진 일에 최선을 다하고, 삶의 순간순간에서 행복과 기쁨을 누리시는 두 분의 모습을 저 또한 닮아가고 싶습니다. 고객만족부 강북사무소 조 성 윤 사원 >>> 대학시절 밴드동아리에서 보컬로 활동했던 경험이 있고 늘 음악에 관심이 많은지라 인터뷰 에 참여하게 되었는데 사모님과 긍정적으로 생활 하시는 모습이 너무나 보기 좋았습니다. 또 선배 님께서 하신 말씀 중 나의 지나온 세월의 절반이 실패였지만 결코 후회하지는 않는다 고 하신 구 절이 가장 인상적이었지요. 집안에 자유롭게 연주할 수 있는 공간을 만들 어놓고 음악을 생활의 일부분으로 접할 수 있으시다는 점도 멋지게 느껴 졌어요. 저도 언젠가는 집에 이런 시설들을 꼭 마련하고 싶습니다(웃음). 복지후생부 이 규 헌 사원 >>> 대학시절 락밴드에서 베이스 기타를 연주했던 터라 개인적으로 도움이 되는 말씀들을 많이 건질 수 있었던 것 같습니다. 물 흐르듯 마음 가는대로 사신다는 두 분의 인생관도 참 멋지고 좋은 것 같 아요. 인터뷰 다녀왔더니 저희 부장님께서 농담으 로 기타 한 대 안 얻어왔냐? Kuwaiti power demand is increasing at an annual rate of 8 percent. The country must raise its generating capacity to supply a growing number of factories and homes and to develop new industries such as tourism. Russia Signs Deal for Oil, Gas Exploration in Jordan Jan. 19 By Nayla Razzouk Russia s Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko signed an agreement encouraging Russian companies, including state-owned OAO Zarubezhneft, to explore for oil and gas in Jordan. The agreement allows for direct investment in exploration projects as well as ventures with private local companies to look for oil and gas in the Arab country. The accord also allows Russians to participate in projects for power generation, oil shale and renewable energy, Jordanian Energy Ministry said today said in an e-mailed statement. Shmatko signed the agreement today in Jordan s capital, Amman, before Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was scheduled to end a two-day visit, the ministry said. It didn t give details about how the pact would encourage Russian companies to do business in Jordan. Separately, Medvedev and King Abdullah II discussed ways to spur Russian investments in the nuclear industry in Jordan, the kingdom s official news agency Petra said. Russia s ZAO Atomstroyexport is among three groups preselected by Jordan to build the kingdom s first nuclear reactor by 2019. Sending Jeffrey Tesler to the U.S. is appropriate, a two- judge panel at the High Court in London said. Tesler s lawyers had said he shouldn t be extradited because the case has strong links to the U.K. and British prosecutors are carrying out their own investigation. Tesler and another U.K. citizen were indicted on Feb. 17 last year by a federal grand jury in Houston, accused of violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. If convicted of all charges, each faces a maximum prison sentence of 55 years. James Cameron s 2009 film <Avatar> may be seen as legendary by many, but for French director Michel Gondry, director of the newly-released superhero flick <The Green Hornet>, the 3-D technology of <Avatar>just does not appeal. I personally don t like using CGI technology when shooting the characters faces, Gondry told reporters Wednesday at Hotel Shilla in Seoul, ahead of the Korean premiere of his superhero comedy. You cannot deliver the characters emotions that way. I respect <Avatar> and what it has contributed to the film history. But I like to use 3-D to enhance the narrative (not characters). Co-starring Canadian actor and screenwriter Seth Rogan and Taiwanese mega pop star Jay Chou, <The Green Hornet> also categorized as a 3-D film tells a story of a young slacker businessman (Rogan) who becomes a crime fighter along with his late father s assistant and skilled martial artist, Kato (Chou). This movie can be watched as 3-D, and even 2- D if you choose to take off your 3-D glasses from time to time throughout the movie, Gondry said. He also predicted that the heated debate on 3-D technology and 3-D movies will soon disappear. We haven t been always talking about our movies being in color ever since the industry turned its back on black and white, he said. I think the same will happen with 3-D. It soon won t be something very new to the public. <The Green Hornet> was co-written by Rogan and his colleague Evan Goldberg, based on the character of the same name that had originated in a 1930s radio program, who later was featured in comic books and a television series. My writing partner and I have been always super hero fans and comic book fans, Rogan told reporters. We wanted to add something original to the superhero movie genre. We wanted to add our own sensibility into it. Rogan said he and his partner wanted to create a somewhat different hero in <The Green Hornet>. Most of superheroes in movies are pretty heroic, strong and morally centered, he said. But we were interested in starting with someone who wasn t any of these things yet slowly starts to gain these qualities as the movie develops. The Kato Character, played by Chou, was once played by legendary Bruce Lee in an ABC television series from 1966 to 1967. Bruce Lee was immense, and it was important for us not to copy him, said Gondry. That s one of the reasons why we chose Chou because he didn t want to imitate Lee. He was himself. It was very cool. Chou, who showed up at the conference wearing a green tie, said one of the biggest challenges he faced while working on the film was the language barrier. Things could have been a lot easier if I knew English, said Chou in Chinese, speaking through an interpreter. I spent a whole month memorizing the script and learning the language. Noted for his inventive visual style and manipulation of mise-en-scene in his previous works, such as The Science of Sleep (2006) and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Gondry brought his own little camera to the press conference, taking photos of the media crew.
