It was only 20 years ago that the golden Buddha was discovered in the city of Bangkok. For years this huge, ugly, old concrete Buddha had sat in the middle of town. People put empty cans on it and used it to hang their bags while they changed the film in their cameras. Then one Buddhist priest took the old statue to his temple, but in the moving process it was cracked. Inside was found the world s largest chunk of sculptured gold standing 8 feet high. What I want to share with you is far more valuable than discovering an ancient golden Buddha. The good news I have for you is that treasure is inside your own life, your future, your destiny. You and I are like tiny acorns which hold the potential for becoming mighty oak trees. How should you behave as an employee? The answer is that you should not be a person who does only what he or she is told to do. No employer wants an employee who only does exactly what he or she is told. Imagine yourself to be an employer; imagine for simplicity s sake that you are employing a house servant. What kind of a person would you consider someone who is known to do only what he or she is told, one who waits to be told what to do, or a person who knows what needs to be done and does it without being reminded? Of course, you know the answer. You should be an employee who goes the extra mile without the motive of being praised or promoted. View Change as an Opportunity Welcome Feedback from Others Know Your Limits and Stay Safe Go Beyond What You re Asked to Do Be Strict to Yourself, Generous to Others Dear Members of the School Board: I heard that for the coming year, the school board is considering a major change to two of the three winter vacation periods that are part of the school calendar. I also heard that the new proposal would give two weeks off during the Christmas and New Year s Day vacations. I think this would be a huge mistake. If the purpose of the winter break is to give families time to spend together, a week or two during the Christmas and New Year s Day period is sufficient time to see family and friends. But as far as traveling on a vacation is concerned, this is the least efficient and most expensive time to travel. I think this proposal should be given a lot more thought. Sincerely, Dianne Miller Remember the days when there was a milkman? I remember when I was little we had a milkman in our town and left the glass bottles of milk on the porch. Now we go to the store and get a plastic jug of milk or carton. My dad used to use an oldfashioned razor to shave where you just replaced the blade. Now everybody uses throw-away razors. Dad also used to use a shaving mug with soap in it instead of an aerosol can of shaving cream. Our society today definitely is a throw-away society. The list of products we used to keep for years and now dispose of instantly is almost endless: tissues, disposable diapers, paper napkins, paper cups, paper plates, plastic cups, wooden chopsticks, razors, plastic bags, toner cartridges, and camera.

We are told that laughter is sunshine filling a room. And where2there is laughter, there is also life. They say that people who laugh a lot live longer than do2 the sour-faced. When we laugh together, gratitude comes more easily, companionship thrives, and all praise is sincere. Laughter brings us joy that cannot be bought. Such2 joy is with us throughout each day. To hide joy deep within us away from others will make us2 lonely misers. We cannot buy or sell joy, but we can give or receive it as a gift. Laughter s joy celebrates the moment we are living right now. It is a gift we must share, or it will wither and die. Sharing2, it grows and thrives, and always returns to us when we need it most. In total, no differences were found between non-hispanic white and Hispanic adults in the percentage of calories consumed from fast food. However, the percentage of calories from fast food was higher among non-hispanic black adults than non-hispanic white and Hispanic adults. This difference was the largest for young adults aged 2039, where non-hispanic black adults consumed more than one-fifth of their percentage of calories from fast food. The pattern among middle-aged adults in the 4059 age group was similar to the pattern among adults in the 2039 age group. No ethnic differences were found among adults aged 60 and over, especially between non-hispanic black and Hispanic persons. 13.2 10.5 10.2 2039 4059 Age(years) Non-Hispanic black 6.1 6.6 6.3 60 and over Hispanic People tend to use logic in presenting their side of an issue but apparently their logic is from only one point of view. Your goal is to help them see the reasoning from both angles. For example, an employee approaches you for a raise, saying that because the company plans to move its headquarters farther out into the suburbs, he will have to travel farther to work. : Would he be willing to accept a pay cut if the company decided to move its headquarters closer to his house? Here is another example: The employee wants a raise because the company has had a profitable year. Would the employee also be willing to sign an agreement for a decrease in pay if the company does poorly the next year? Justify the end Reverse his logic Improve his situation Set a high goal Use your emotion No one objects when football players slap hands and pat one another on the back after big plays, or when baseball players hug the pitcher after the last out is made. Well, there is no reason not to give and receive appropriate physical support in the business world either. When you want to congratulate, compliment, gain attention, or inspire someone,. A pat on the back can express encouragement, or placing the hand firmly on one s shoulder can mean trust. You can do it anywhere so long as you are confident and comfortable with yourself. your thoughts matter a lot a touch can work wonders positions are the key points act as if you re on the stage be careful not to use your hands I Before the landing in Tucson, the pilot announced that a tire had blown at takeoff in Albuquerque and we were making an emergency landing. The stewardesses showed us the posture we should take: Heads bent over our knees, hands under our thighs. They told us how to climb out the emergency exits and how to slide down the wings. You re kidding! I thought to myself. This is the way it s going to be? Right in the middle of my life I still have to finish a book I m going to die! I had to take off my glasses with trembling hands. I clutched them in my hand. We hit the runway. The sound was violent and went on forever, but we landed fine. I sat up. We were alive. I was lucky to be alive. I felt kinder toward my neighbors. bored curious terrified relieved delighted depressed envious regretful nervous disappointed A great deal of our knowledge of the world is gained via perception that is, via our sensory faculties such as our sense of sight, hearing, touch, and so forth. However, the problem is that. There are familiar examples of this sort of perception, such as the way a straight stick will look bent when placed underwater, or the mirages that result from wandering dehydrated through a barren desert. In these cases, if one were not suitably refining one s responses to one s sensory experiences, then one would be led into forming a false belief. If one did not know about light refraction, for example, then one would think that the stick really is bending as it enters the water; and if one did not know that one was experiencing a mirage, then one would really believe that there is an unexpected oasis on the horizon. perception is influenced by expectation boredom comes from familiarity appearances can be deceptive you see the world as one big contest you can perceive only one thing at a time

AB I have always enjoyed traveling. I do it as often as I can. Every summer I get away, preferably to another country either in South America or in Europe. A, I don t always get a chance to leave this country. Sometimes, I don t have enough money. I am sometimes too busy to take off a month or two to travel. Nevertheless, I usually do everything I can to get away. B, I will work 55-hour weeks, spend nothing on myself, and go without luxuries such as a car or dining out just to save enough money for my trips. I even try to survive on peanut butter sandwiches or baked potatoes to save money for my plane tickets. A B Similarly As a result Similarly For example Therefore In contrast However In contrast However For example But once those words enter your mind, you may see or hear the characters and experience powerful emotions. What happens as you read about a lemon? Perhaps you see its shape and color, or you may even find your mouth watering. However, there is no lemon in front of you, only words about a lemon. Yet once those words enter your head, you react to them almost as you would to a real lemon. The same thing happens when you read a great thriller novel. All you have in front of you are words, little black marks on a page. When those words describe a character in a dangerous situation, your muscles tense up, your heartbeat races, and your adrenaline rises. A few years ago I had a problem I couldn t wait to get to work in the morning and didn t want to leave at night. Have you ever heard the shark attack survivor s stories about not feeling any pain at the time of the attack? This is because the brain perceives that drowning is a bigger threat to their survival at that time and place than the bite, so it delays the pain to allow the victim to swim to shore. It is not until this drowning threat is removed that the extreme levels of pain from the injuries may become noticeable. People born without the ability to feel pain are continually injuring themselves and putting their lives at risk. These types of amazing pain stories are also many in war-time tales when there is always the more immediate threat of death. Doesn t it make sense for the body in these scenarios to delay the pain response so that soldiers can remove themselves from the more pressing dangers such as incoming fire and death? AOne evening, for the sixth time in a row, I phoned home to tell Sam that once again I d miss his bedtime. That s okay, said Sam. But he asked me to wake him up when I got home. It would be real late, I said. BSam listened, but insisted. I asked him why. He said he just wanted to know I was there. To this day I can t explain precisely what happened at that moment, but I suddenly knew, with utter finality, that I had to leave my job. CBeing a member of the President s Cabinet was so much better than any job I d had that I couldn t get enough of it. Not surprisingly, the rest of my life shriveled into a dried raisin. I lost contact with my old friends. I saw little of my wife, and even less of my 12-year-old son, Sam. shrivel ACB BAC BCA CAB CBA

When my mother retired from teaching college, she found herself with a large, empty house and no one to fill it: her children had all ended up living in other cities, some quite distant, and my father had died years before. A former professor of sociology, she made a smart move: my mother offered a free room to graduate students from her university, with a preference for those from East Asian cultures, where older people are respected. It s been more than thirty years since she retired, and this arrangement still continues. She has had a series of housemates from places like Japan, Taiwan, and currently Beijing with great benefits for her well-being. When one couple had a baby while living with her, their daughter grew up treating my mother like her own grandmother. As a two-year-old, the toddler would go into my mother s bedroom every morning to see if she was up yet and routinely gave her hugs through the day. That baby was born when my mother was almost ninety and with that bundle of delight roaming the house, my mother actually seemed for a few years to get younger, both physically and mentally. We believe that her longevity is, at least partly, thanks to this. The Lonely, Sad Elderly My Mother s Wise Decision Generation Gaps in Child-raising Good and Bad Things of Housemates An Empty Nest: Fearful and Sorrowful A When you re traveling internationally, one of the things to keep in mind is the airport tax. That s a fee that some airports charge departing passengers. Unfortunately, Sylvia wasn t aware of it when a she2 entered the airport in Bali. After she spent a week of her holiday vacation in Bali, Sylvia was ready to return to her family. B I m sorry, ma am, the man answered. We can t let you leave without paying the airport tax. Perhaps you could beg to get the money. Sylvia couldn t believe what b she2 had just heard. Beg for money? Tears started rolling down her cheeks as she headed over to the ticketing counter. What was c she2 supposed to do? She didn t know anyone in the country. C Suddenly, she felt a tap on her shoulder. Excuse me, a young woman said. I noticed you were a bit distressed. Is there something I can do to help you? Sylvia blurted out the story, and the young woman immediately gave Sylvia the money she needed. Sylvia was very grateful, not only for the few dollars but for d her2kindness. D When she learned about the airport tax, she started searching for any money she might have with e her2, but all she found were some coins. The trip had cost more than she had expected. Dragging her suitcase behind her, Sylvia stepped up to a customer-care representative. I don t have enough money for the airport tax, she explained. Is there anything I can do?
