Planned Performances Daegu Opera House has met citizens with high level of musical and popular works, enhancing the reputation of Daegu as The City of Opera. Beginning with encore performance of opera <Turandot>, of which seats were all sold in the 12th Daegu International Opera Festival, opera <Il Barbiere di Siviglia> and <Le Nozze di Figaro>, which are based on Beaumarchais s a series of Le Figaro, were staged every other day and such colorful performances as GALA concert A Spring Walk in which the audience could smell spring fully, were prepared. About a total of 39,000 citizens visited Daegu Opera House to enjoy world-classical music. Beside the full act opera, Lecture Opera with commentaries, Family Ballet, and a concert for which famous musicians were invited including Samuel Youn (Hero in Bayreuth) were performed. In addition, such music projects targeting to foster next generation musicians as 2015 Debut Concert and Opera Universiade to which the music majors in the universities in Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and Universitat Wien were invited were successfully held.

That was <Turandot>, the opening opera that triggered tickes to be sold out in the hottest opera festival. The opera was reperformed by the same direction staff. Turandot, Puccini s final opera in his life, is about Prince Calaf s challenge to win cold Princess Turandot in China and her love. Under the direction of the Great Mestro Janos Acs who proved his excellent musicality in The Three Tenor Performance in Korea, sopranos Kim Rahee and Lee Hwayoung who are already placed as Korea s best Turandot, and tenor Lee Byungsam who was awared Singer Prize of DIOF awards appeared on the stage again. Joining the new Calaf of Trumphet Tenor Sin Dongwon attracted more attention. In two performances of the opera, over 95% seats were occupied with citizen s tremendous support. 10 11

Received well by the audience, the opera that showed witty acting of singers and interesting scenes was reperformed. After the edition and adaptation of the original work by the popular opera director Lee Uiju, and with the dynamic music of Yeo Jakyung who was a permanent conductor of Prime Philhamonic Orchestra and the fantastic performance of the leading singers, soprano Lee Yunkyung and tenor Huh Namwon, musicality of the opera was created newly. Citiznes who saw the performance was fascinated by the comic opera and enjoyed it by bursting into laughing pleasantly. In particular, this time, Mozart s <Le Nozze di Figaro> and <Il Barbiere di Siviglia> were performed in turn in order to generate the synergy effect to let the audience understand the two works better. 12 13

Kim Jinsoo Ambrogio / Bartolo Actor Gu Juwan Daegu City Choir DCU Cultural Artistic Center Daegu International Opera Orchestra Together with the greatest opera buffa <Il Barbiere di Siviglia>, <Le Nozze di Figaro>, a sequel to the Barber, was performed in turn. <Le Nozze di Figaro> that is known to have the most interesting and beautiful music of Mozart s operas is a comedy in which Figaro and Susanna, the staff of Count Almaviva, and his Countess screwed over the Count, and Figaro is successfully married to Susanna. Although the <Le Nozze di Figaro> and <Il Barbiere di Siviglia> were written in different times, their stories are connected with each other. Therefore, performing two works in turn helped the audience understand the plays. In this special event, the performances were created in the same direction in order to give a sense of continuity to the audience, and different main singers and conductors were invited to show plenty of musical expression. The harmony between Maurizio Barbacini, the successful singer turned opera conductor, and Korea s top singers attracted more attention. Daegu Opera House offered Figaro Package, a 30% discount for the purchase of tickets of the two performances, to help the audience enjoy the performances at inexpensive prices. 14 15

The performance was made with the special invitation for all seats. Therefore, more citizens enjoyed the event. This <L'Elisir d'amore> was performed in the same stage setting and costume as the work of 2015 Opera Universiade. In the performance, famous local vocalists took the leading characters and harmonized with the amateur choir of university students. In the aspect, the event was special to both the students and the leading vocalists. On the day, around 10 foreign journalists from Brazilian TV Paraniba, Nepal BBC, the UK Aquamedia, UAE Skynews Arabia, and UNICEF, who went to Daegu to report 2015 World Water Forum, visited Daegu Opera House and saw the performance. Therefore, this performance became an opportunity to let the world know about the excellent competence of Korean vocalists and the great opera production ability of Korea. 16 17
Concert A Spring Walk Venue Daegu Opera House Duration 80 minutes Daegu Opera House held the Opera Gala Concert A Spring Walk with the best singers in the province. Jointly organized by Daegu International opera Orchestra and Daegu Classical Singers Association, this concert was held in order to expand Daegu citizens cultural opportunities and make them feel friendly to classical music. The concert, which was conducted by Lee Dongsin, a permanent conductor of Kyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Symphony Orchestra and directed by the locally famous director Yoo Cheolwoo, was designed with the famous operatic arias loved by Korean people. A total of 16 arias of various operas from the comedy <L Elisir d amore> to the tragedies <La Bohème>, <Tosca>, and <Roméo et Juliette> showed the audience. A variety of performances, such as duet, ensemble, and chorus, helped the audience get fascinated by classical songs, and thus the concert was highly praised. Sop. M.Sop. Ten. Bar. Coppélia is the world s most loved comedic ballet. The performance, which was created by ingenious stage and costume based on cartoonist imagination of James Jeon, the choreographer of Seoul Ballet Theater, one of three major ballet companies, gave the audience more dramatic interest. The comic ballet is about the episode arising in the circumstance where the doll Coppélia made by Doctor Coppélius is believed to be a living person by town people. The ballet shows well the classic and cheerful tune of Léo Delibes, the famous ballet composer together with Tchaikovsky in the 19th century. Hoping that <Cartoon Ballet Coppélia> would become friendly to children who first experienced ballet, Daegu Opera House allowed children aged over six to see the ballet. The event was chosen as the project of Nationwide Cultural Experience together with Cultural & Arts Centers organized by the Korean Cultural & Arts Centers Association, and donated seats to culturally isolated people. Therefore, more citizens got a chance to experience the performance. 20 21

Lee Yeonkyeong, Yun Eunsol Met Opera Chorus Drugiya Youth Choir Elementary School Choir to the College of Education KNU Daegu International Opera Orchestra <A Lucky Day>, the representative work of the writer Hyeon Jinkun of Daegu, was recreated in the type of opera. The creative opera <A Lucky Day> of Park Jiwoon, famous in the province, is about sad but beautiful circumstances of Sincheon and Heemang bridge in Daegu in early 1980 and of Dongdaemun in Seoul in the end of 1990. In 2011, the work titled <City Love Song> was awarded in Creative Opera Contest of Korea National Opera, and went to stage in Opera Festival. After some edition, it was recreated in the name of <A Lucky Day>, and was selected as 2013 Excellent Work Reperformance Project of Korea National Opera and was awarded in 2015 Opera Contest of Daegu Opera House. This performance of Daegu Opera House and Drugiya Opera reminded contemporary Daegu citizens of memories of that time. In particular, the opera domestically first created with the use of Media Facade Imaging Technique attracted a lot of attention. 22 23

Lee Yujin Gimcheon Opera Choir Daegu International Opera Orchestra Daegu Opera House set <Lucia di Lammermoor> of Gaetano Donizetti, the great maestro of Bel Canto opera, on stage. The opera <Lucia di Lammermoor> based on a real story in Scotland is a tragic drama in which Lucia falls into a man of opposing house but ends up marring someone else and kills the husband in their wedding bed and dies finally. The work is reminded of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet. The opera features 20-minute coloratura in Mad Scene and unique and beautiful Bel Canto music. This <Lucia di Lammermoor> was performed mainly with main opera songs. The kind explanation of Park Myungki, the opera director of Daegu opera House, helped family and student audiences feel somewhat friendly to opera. 24 25
Concert Samuel Youn & Europe Opera Stars Venue Daegu Opera House Duration 120 minutes A concert of Samuel Youn, Hero in Bayreuth, and great opera singers loved in Europe was held. The bass-baritone Samuel Yoon has been a permanent member of the Cologne Opera ensemble and has played a leading character many years in Bayreuth, a city of Wagner s opera. Opera singers who were performed together were soprano Seo Sunyoung who was awarded in Tchaikovsky Competition, one of three major competitions, baritone Kim Jutaek who is a rising star in Europe, and tenor Roh Seonghoon who was placed in the top of multiple European competitions. This performance was comprised of Part 1 with famous arias of such operas <Il barbiere di siviglia> and <L elisir d Amore> and Part 2 with arias of Wagner operas <Der Fligende Holländer>, making the audience impressed greatly. Year-end concert 2015 Venue Daegu Opera House Duration 120 minutes In return for Daegu citizen s support and new-year message, Daegu Opera House held Year-end Concert 2015 Love You & Thank You. In the year-end concert organized together with Daegu and Gyeongbuk Classical Singers Association (president: Sin Mikyeong), the stage looked like an opera scene. With the best opera singers, the concert was very special. The concert program included famous operatic arias song sung by opera singers, Children s choir, women s ensemble, and men s ensemble. In addition, in the lobby of the concert hall, mini concert was held by Yeolin Ensemble and Ars Nova Men s Ensemble which drew enthusiastic applause of the audience who were waiting for the main concert. Fresh impression with the performance of young opera singers! Daegu Opera House held a special event to show the future of Daegu singers who will lead Korean vocal music. It is Opera Universiade in which students of University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and students of music collesages in Kyungpook National University, Keimyung University, Catholic University of Daegu, and Yeungnam University were invited. Leading singers were selected by each university audition, and a choir was comprised of students from the four universities. The event gave the students an opportunity to experience a real opera and have an exchange with other students. In the way of creating one work with different university teams, various kinds of their attractions appeared. The event was chosen as the project of Nationwide Cultural Experience together with Cultural & Arts Centers organized by the Korean Cultural & Arts Centers Association, and donated seats to culturally isolated people. 30 31
2015 Debut concert Venue Daegu Opera House Duration 100 minutes The project to raise the next-generation opera stars who will lead Korean vocal music! Graduates of department of music at music colleges (four years) in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do and local students who learned overseas participated in two auditions (*1st: Apr. 28(Thu), *2nd: Apr. 30(Sat)) and had fierce competition. As a result, a total of sixteen new vocalists who showed their excellent skills and possibility went on the concert stage. With them, Daegu International Opera Orchestra and the conductor Kim Beomsu had fantastic harmony. The new vocalists who appeared on the concert also showed off their competence in various performances, including Wednesday Salon Concert of Daegu Opera House, the main opera <The History of Garakguk> of Opera Festival, and the special operas <Le nozze di Figaro> and <Lucia di Lammermoor> of Daegu Opera House. The 1st Creative song contest for university student Venue Daegu Opera House Duration 90 minutes Alto Sop. Bar. Ten. Sop. Sop. Sop. Sop. Sop. Sop. Bar. Sop. Bar. Ten. Creative Song Contest for University Students was held for finding and raising talented young composers and developing Korean lyric songs. The students who majored in music composition didn t have enough opportunities to present their created compositions. Therefore, this event gave them an opportunity to show their compositions on stage and laid the foundation for contributing to the development of Korean creative operas. A total of fourteen songs that passed the preliminary round (Jul. 6 to 24) were sang by new vocalists on stage. The composers of the four works selected by judgment were awarded certificate of commendation and the prize of total 2 million won. The Grand Prize went to Wind Flower of Kang Hanmoi from Yeongnam University, which was highly praised for its Korean-stylish and unique music tone. 13 th Daegu International Opera Festival In last May, Daegu Opera House improved the status of Korean opera with all-sold-out <La Traviata> in Staatstheater Karlsruhe in Germany and <Il Barbiere di Siviglia> (produced and directed in Daegu) in Teatro Municipale Giuseppe Verdi di Salerno in Italy. The theme of the 13th Daegu International Opera Festival was Amore Mortale about lethal love enough to change a fate. What deserves most credit in the Daegu International Opera Festival was a fearless challenge for newness. The stages for the festival were composed of all new works but Giuseppe Verdi s grand-scale opera <Aida> and <Rigoletto>, which are familiar to the public. Opera <Lohengrin> performed by the main characters of German Wiesbaden National Theater contributed to moving the festival one notch up. The National Opera of Korea s <Les Pêcheurs de Perles> was also successful in attracting the audience though it was the first performance in Korea. <The History of Garakguk> a creative opera in memory of South Korea's 70th anniversary of Liberation Day also marked satisfactory score in the audience s interest and support, overcoming its unfamiliarity and limitation to ticket sales.

The 6th Vocal Concours for Amateurs Talk Concert Opera becomes Fine arts, Fine arts becomes Opera The 6th Vocal Concours for Amateurs, one of special events in the 13th Daegu International Opera Festival, was held for amateurs who love vocal music. The participation songs were limited to opera arias in order to reflect the identity of Daegu International Opera festival. The special event has become more popular. This year, a total of 57 participants from various provinces, including Seoul, Chungcheong-do, and Jeollado, had fierce competition. The largest number of people participated in the content this year, which showed its popularity and reputation. In this contest, participants competed with each other in the categories of general participants and senior participants. Interestingly, those who went to the final stage had a chance to perform with orchestra. Along with the best performances of 15 participants in the final stage, the special performance of Park Youngtaek, the winner of last year s concours made the event more meaningful. Daegu International Opera Festival and Daegu Art Museum, which represent music and arts, respectively, held a meaningful event in Daegu Art Museum that has Yinka Shonibare exhibition. In the event, visitors are able to know the background and stories of image works that came from the operas <La Traviata> and <Un ballo in maschera>, and the main opera <Aida> of the 13th Daegu International Opera Festival to be held in October. Therefore, the event gave participants an opportunity to understand better arts and operas. Master Class Opera Odyssey 10. 10 Nicola Martinucci As part of the special program of the 13th Daegu International Opera Festival, Daegu Opera House invited Nicola Martinucci called the best tenor of this century and had master class. The world-class Nicola Martinucci known as bronze-toned tenor has had performances as a dramatic spinto tenor over the last 50 years in prominent theatres, such as Teatro alla Scala in Milan, The Metropolitan in New York, Royal Opera House in London, Vienna State Opera in Austria, Berlin State Opera in Germany, Liceu, Barcelona, in Spain, and Zürich playhouse in Switzerland, and has been loved by classical music fans. After the invitation of tenor Vittorio Terranova was greatly supported by vocal music prospects in 2013, this Master Class was held again. After the meeting on Oct. 12, Nicola Martinucci of the Master Class visited four music colleges of Kyungbook National University, Keimyung University, Yeongnam University, Catholic University of Daegu, and Gyeongbuk Arts High School and had master class to teach his stage experience, skills and special know-how to vocal prospects. The meeting in Daegu Opera House was held specially for vocalists who had a chance to get vocal instruction of Martinucci. Opera Class, in which participants took the in-depth opera lecture of the invited best specialists in classical music, was newly created as Opera Odyssey. Costumes and props of the performances are displayed near Opera Salon, and delivered excitement of the operas to people. Before the main performance, a variety of performances will be presented in outdoor special stage such as mini concert, vocal music, instrumental music, dance, Korean traditional music, performance, and so on. Domestic and international private and professional arts organizations and individuals can apply to participate. in order to put more efforts to find global new talented musicians. After the participation in International Competition for Opera Singers Ferruccio Tagliavini in Austria last year, Daegu Opera House joined Riccardo Zandonai International Competition this year.
