ABST RACT S A S tu dy on th e S h op - n am e s in K ore an ac c ordin g to Kin ds of W ords - On the base of the telephone dir ectory of Inchon betw een in 1990 and in 2000- Chae Hyeon - Joo Major in Kor ean Language Gr aduate School of Education Inha Univer sity A s for a r apidly - changing society, it s v ocabularies change in high speed. W e can see scene of the change vividly through shop- names. It is one of the w ay s to study the aspect s of Kor ean language to analyze it s actual condition s because shop- names are closely related w ith our daily life. A ccording to this point of view, in this study I inv estigated shop- nam es in 30 kinds of jobs by mean s of the telephone book s from 1990 to 2000 and clas sified them int o indigenou s. And I classified into indigenou s Korean w ords, words from Chinese characters, foreign w ords and hybrid w ords according to clas sification of w or ds and compar ed to analy se the fr equency of u sing them., T he r esult show s that w ords fr om Chinese character hav e decreased r apidly in shop- names of w edding cer emony halls, trav el agencies, computer gam e shops and cartoon shops, while for eign w ords hav e increased in a high r atio in bar s, coffee shops, lodging s, tr av el agencies and ceremony halls. Hybrid w ords has increased in shops. - 101 -
Indigenou s Kor ean w or ds have incr eased in sequence in shop - names of trav el agencies, mills and hospitals. It is con sidered that the phase of this change is resulted from the cognition that shop- names w ith foreign w or ds and hybrid w or ds look m or e intellectual and elegant, which has been spread. Also, ther e ar e such cases as to nam e shop- names by aw kw ar d nam es or new w or ds of unknown nationality to m ake them look foreign shop- nam es. And their structure became v ariou s fr om a single noun form t o a complex structure like phrase, clause, or sentence. How ev er, the incr easement of the u se of pure Kor ean w or ds is a proof that effort s and trials for the purification of our language ar e lasting and ther e appeared a lot s of shop- names to m ake u s feel emotion and familiarity tow ard our language as naming ar chaism with modern style. - 102 -
