5 GENERAL ACADEMIC POLICIES 학사일반안내 Program Duration _ 수업연한 Period that the students must register and take courses for graduation or course completion: Undergraduate Program: 4 years - If degree requirements are met, the duration can be reduced for the undergraduates. Maximum Period for Enrollment _ 재학연한 The maximum period that is allowed for the students to be enrolled: Undergraduate Program: 6 years - Students who do not complete the program until the period ends will be expelled from the university. 6 Academic Leave _ 휴학 Kinds of Academic Leave Category Subcategory Military Service ( 군휴학 ) - Personal Reasons ( 일반휴학 ) Academic leave for military service [ 군휴학 ] Illness Study, Studying abroad Internship, Entrepreneurship - Students joining the army during academic leave must apply for academic leave for military service with a copy of the notice for military duty attached. 입영통지서가나온학생은이를첨부하여군휴학신청 - After discharge, a copy of the certificate of discharge should be attached when applying academic return. 전역후전역증사본또는주민등록초본 ( 병역사항기재 ) 을첨부하여군복학신청 - If going home is ordered in the military service, you should submit a certificate of the order, request for academic return or general leave to your school office directly. 군휴학한학생이귀향조치를받았을경우에는귀향증명서를첨부하여복학하거나일반휴학으로변경 Etc. Application for leave for military service is open year-round. Designated period(january, July); refer to the academic calendar Designated period, refer to the academic calendar Check points when applying academic leave [ 유의사항 ] Portal Student Registry Status Change Application for leave Submit 'Request for academic leave' to school office with documentary evidence Books checked out: When applying for academic leave, no books should be overdue and all books checked out should be returned. Scholarship: Scholarship recipients must consult with the staff member in charge of the scholarship from the Student Supporting Team(7-3) before applying for academic leave. Update your contact information up-to-date in Portal - Student Registry - Student information change. Period of academic leave Freshmen cannot apply for academic leave for the first semester except for the military service and illness. 신입생, 재입학생은첫 학기동안은입대, 질병을제외하고는휴학불허 Students can have academic leave for semester or semesters at a time. Students can apply for academic leave no longer than years during the period of attendance at the university. 일반휴학은학기단위로최대 년까지가능하고, 재학기간중총 년을초과할수없음 Academic Return _ 복학 Leave for military service are not included in the number of leave period that can be granted. Leave for pregnancy, childbirth, child care, entrepreneurship shall be permitted within years and it is also not included in the number of leave periods that can be granted. 군휴학 ( 병역법복무기간 ) 의경우일반휴학기간에산입되지않으며, 임신 출산 육아휴학, 창업휴학 ( 년이내 ), 질병등부득이한사유가인정되는경우추가휴학허가 Academic Return Period & Procedure [ 복학신청 ] Period : During January/July(Refer to the academic calendar) Procedure: Portal Student Registry Status Change Application for return Students who do not return to school in the semester following the expiration of his/her leave of absence will be expelled according to school regulation. 휴학기간이만료되는학생은복학해야하며, 복학하지않는경우제적사유가됨 UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

7 Permanent Academic Leave Dismissal from the University _ 자퇴 / 제적 Interdisciplinary Major _ 융합전공 Permanent Academic Leave [ 자퇴 ] Any student who wishes permanent academic leave from the University should submit application for voluntary resignation with the reasons specified and co-signed by student's guarantor to obtain approval from student's academic advisor, the school head. 자퇴를원하는학생은자퇴원을구체적으로작성후지도교수면담및승인, 학부장의승인을받고학부행정실로제출 Dismissal from the University [ 제적 ] A student in any of the following clauses shall be dismissed from the University. 아래사항에해당하는자는제적처리 - A person who fails to return to school in the semester following the expiration of his/her leave of absence. 휴학기간이만료되었으나복학하지않는자 - A person who does not enroll within the designated enrollment period and does not finish course registration for each semester. 기간내에등록 ( 등록금납부 ) 또는수강신청을하지않은자 - A person who has received a total of three academic warnings and is considered unable to complete his/her program. 학사경고를통산 3 회받은자 - A person who fails to complete his/her program within the maximum period for enrollment. 재학연한내졸업하지못하는자 Interdisciplinary Major [ 융합전공이란?] Students are required to take general courses during their first year before declaring their majors. For graduation, students need to complete at least two majors, st track and nd track. According to the curriculum of each track, minimum of 54 credits for the st track and 8 credits for the nd track must be completed. Credits from a course that is common in more than two tracks is calculated only once. ( The common course can satisfy the qualification of the tracks taken, but the overlapped credits should be substituted by the other course's credits in the tracks of the interdisciplinary major). (Academic Regulation Article 9) 교과목총수업시간의 3/4 미만을출석한경우 F 학점부여 Attendance [ 출석 ] A grade can be given only when a student attends more than 3/4 of the total number of classes. 수업일수의 3/4 이상을출석해야만학점부여 In case of unavoidable circumstances, attendance can be approved when a student submits a 'Request for Attendance Approval' to the instructor in charge of the course. 불가피한경우 출석인정원 을교과목담당교수에게제출하여출석으로인정받을수있음 Mobile Attendance System 전자출결 Outline 개요 - Processing and managing the class attendance through the attendance check system(beacon+wifi) in each classroom. 강의실별전자출결시스템을통한출결관리 Scores are calculated based on one's mid-term exam, final exam, assignments, quizzes, attitude, attendance, presentations, etc. A calculating method can differ from each instructor. 성적은중간고사, 기말고사, 과제, 퀴즈, 수업태도, 출석, 발표등을기초로산정하며, 교과목담당교수에따라 성적산출방법은상이할수있음 Grading System [ 성적체계 ] Lecture courses and combined courses(lecture&experiment) are evaluated with a letter grade. 이론수업및이론? 실습혼합수업은등급부여 - Courses that instructors have difficulty with giving exact grades can be evaluated with S (successful) or U (unsuccessful). 등급을매기기곤란한과목은 S 또는 U 부여 - Students can check the attendance and browse the attendance result through their mobile app. 모바일앱을이용하여출석체크및결과조회가능 Please download UNIST Mobile Attendance System App on your mobile phone. Grade Browsing and Correction [ 성적열람및정정 ] If a student has an objection about the grades during the correction period and he/she is justified, the grade can be corrected by his/her instructor. 성적열람및정정기간내이의를신청하고정당한이의인경우성적정정가능 Period of grade browsing and correction - st semester : End of June - nd semester : End of December Awards [ 학기포상 ] A student of exemplary conduct who fits the following criteria shall be recorded as an honor student on the academic records. 다음요건을충족할경우우등생으로학적부에기재 Student who has not received an F and W in any of courses taken during the semester - Student who has completed 5 credits or more with a GPA of 3.9 or higher at the end of each semester 학기말에 5 학점이상이수하고평점평균이 3.9 이상인학생 - Student who has exhibited excellent creativity 탁월한창의력을발휘한학생 - Student deserves to be rewarded for praiseworthy conduct 뛰어난미행으로표창할만한학생 How to grade browsing - All of semester : Portal - Grade - Transcripts - This semester : Portal - Grade - Grade browsing of this semester Sending out Academic Score Reports [ 성적표발송 ] At the end of the semester, an academic score report is sent to a student's home. 11 GRADUATION 졸업 Academic Warning _ 학사경고 Graduation _ 졸업 A student who shows poor academic performance and earns a grade point average below.0 for a semester shall be given an academic warning. 매학기평점평균이.0 에미달한학생에게는학사경고를과함 A student who has been placed on academic warning for two consecutive semesters shall be suspended for one year. 재학중학사경고횟수가재학학기기준연속 회의경우 년간휴학에처함 This clause is applied to students who entered from 04 onward. DGS is responsible for their basic science and cultural education during their freshmen year. 27 School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear School Introduction The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear (SMANE) consists of three tracks such as Mechanical and Aerospace (MAE), Nuclear Science and (NSE) and System Design and Control (SDC). The SMNE focuses on world-class research and education in order to nurture creative experts and scholars who can contribute to the development and advancement of cuttingedge industries. Interdisciplinary approaches with the state-of-the-art facilities by concentrating on a variety of research fields, including design, manufacturing, thermofluid engineering, system control, robotics, system analysis, unmanned vehicles, aerospace engineering, energy, nuclear reactions, nuclear fuels and nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear fuel cladding and structural materials, nuclear reactor/system, and many nuclear applications. Design is nowadays the driving force behind most innovations: bringing solutions to real-world problems, but always based on a human-centered approach. Within our school you can go for an industrial design engineering program, for a human factors engineering program and for a combination of both. The industrial design engineer is a global player, able to master the whole design process, from research to ideas and from concept to production. Human factors engineers master the cognitive, physical, and physiological characteristics of human beings that are applicable to the design of devices and systems, and are able to apply the knowledge in real world design problems in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance. Our school is pioneering a relevant curriculum that prepares design & human factors engineers for essential roles in industry today. Undergraduate Programs Track Introduction ) Industrial Design (ID) The goal of Industrial Design track is to foster creative designers who can lead the innovative design of product and product-service systems. It provides interdisciplinary courses on design knowledge, methods and techniques across the entire product development process, including problem definition, user and market analysis, needs finding, creative idea generation, form and function development, design engineering, prototyping and business start-up. Students majoring in the ID track will play an essential role as integrative design thinkers and practitioners in future society, leading positive and innovative change in our society by employing user-centered design and scientific methods. ) Human Factors (HFE) The goal of Human Factors track is to educate students to understand human abilities, capabilities and the human centred design process. To achieve this goal, students learn to design experimental studies that investigate human performance, behaviour or cognition, to analyse human behavioural and physiological data, and to use these processes and data to improve the usability, safety and comfort of products, services or systems. The track provides courses covering fundamental knowledge in human factors engineering and human performance, as well as research methods. Students can learn fundamental science and engineering principles that can be used to improve the quality of life on earth and solve the most challenging issues of the st century. The field of Energy and Chemical encompasses a wide range of interests including green chemical processes, chemical engineering, advanced materials, and energy conversion and storage. Students can achieve in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience on catalysts, nanomaterials and devices, polymers, fine chemicals, applied molecular chemistry, and other chemical and energy engineering-related subjects. A broad range of IT technologies in the EE areas are to be proactively merged together to create new benefits with the advent of ubiquitous information society driven by digital convergence. 52 School of Natural Science School Introduction The school of natural science was founded in 00 to promote the basic science education and to facilitate the creative interdisciplinary research between science and engineering. Since then, it has been offering MS and Ph.D degrees. Natural Science strives to improve the quality of human life through finding and understanding basic rules in nature. Historically, the convergence of basic science and engineering has been a key process for the advance of human civilization. We believe that the systematic interdisciplinary research between natural science and engineering will be able to speed up the convergence of these two disciplines and UNIST proudly provides an unprecedented and unique education system in Korea for this purpose.
