1 009 년 월전자공학회논문지제 46 권 SC 편제 호 43 논문 SC--6 더블패스마하젠더간섭계를이용한광섬유레이저의파장검출 (A wavelength readout of a fiber-optic tunable laser using a double-pass Mach-Zehnder interferometer ) 박형준 *, 김현진 *, 송민호 ** * (Hyoung-Jun Park, Hyun Jin Kim, and Minho Song ) 요 약 광섬유격자센서어레이용파장가변광섬유레이저의출력파장변화를복조할수있는시스템을제안하였다. 광섬유레이저는반도체광증폭기와 Fabry-Perot 필터를이용하여제작하였고, 더블패스마하젠더간섭계구조를적용하여, 90 위상차를가지는내부트리거를생성하였다. 내부트리거를이용하여얻은 Lissajous 그래프에원형피팅을적용하여.5 mrad 의평균위상오차를얻었다. 실험을통하여파장가변필터의비선형동작특성에의한광섬유레이저의비선형출력을확인하였다. 제안한파장검출방법을적용하면파장가변광원의비선형성을보상하여광섬유격자센서시스템을위한효율적인광원으로적용이가능할것으로예상된다. Abstract We constructed a simple wavelength readout system for a tunable fiber laser which was used for a fiber Bragg grating sensor array system. A quadrature sampling method was used to demodulate wavelength variations of the tunable laser which consisted of a SOA (semi-conductor optical amplifier) and a fiber-optic Fabry-Perot filter. Internal triggers, which have a 90 degree phase period, have been generated by using a double-pass Mach-Zehnder interferometer. From Lissajous plots with quadrature sampled data, a mean phase error of ~.5 mrad was obtained. From the wavelength readout experiments, an accurate and fast linear wavelength demodulation has been confirmed. Keywords : fiber laser, Fabry-Perot filter, Mach-Zehnder interferometer, tunable laser, phase modulator Ⅰ. 서론 파장가변광섬유레이저는분배형광섬유격자 (fiber Bragg grating, FBG) 센서시스템과같이넓은파장대역에서고출력을내는입력광원이필요한경우에기존의저출력광폭광원 (broadband source, BBS) 을대체하는효율적인광원으로각광받고있다 [ 3]. 최근에는에르븀첨가광섬유 (erbium-doped fiber, ** * 학생회원, 정회원, 전북대학교전자정보공학부 (Division of electronics and information engineering, Chonbuk National University) 이연구는 007년교육인적자원부의재원으로학술진흥재단의지원을받아수행된연구임 (KRF D0000) 접수일자 : 008년월7일, 수정완료일 : 009년월4일 EDF) 나반도체광증폭기 (semiconductor optical amplifier, SOA) 등의광증폭소자를쉽게구할수있고파장가변필터를연결하여손쉽게원하는파장대역의레이저출력을얻을수있기때문이다. 그러나이러한파장가변광섬유레이저를센서시스템의입력광원으로사용하는데있어겪게되는어려움은파장변화특성이입력신호에대해서선형적이지않다는것이다. 레이저의발진파장은파장가변필터의투과파장에의해서결정되며이를변조하기위해서주로 PZT (piezoelectric transducer) 압전소자를이용한다. 압전소자는입력전압의진폭과주파수가입력전압에대한출력의비선형성이더욱증가하는특성을보이기때문이다. 파장가변광섬유레이저의비선형특성은기존의광파장분석기 (optical spectrum analyzer, OSA) 로는파악 (43)

OSA의측정속도가파장변화의속도에비하여현저하게느리기때문이다. 광섬유마하젠더간섭계 (Mach-Zehnder interferometer, MZI) 는광섬유방향성커플러 (directonal coupler) 를이용하여쉽게제작이가능하며광경로차를조정하여파장민감도의조절이용이하므로광섬유격자센서의반사파장복조 (demodulator) 와광섬유레이저의파장변화검출등에파장필터로다양하게적용되었다 [3 5]. 그러나 MZI는입력파장의변화에대해서코사인형태의파워전달함수를가지므로, 별도의신호처리기법을사용해야한다 [5 7]. 본논문에서는선행연구에서제안한더블패스 MZI 구조에서생성되는내부트리거신호를이용하여광섬유레이저의파장변화를복조하였다. 실험을통하여파장가변필터의비선형동작특성에따른레이저의발진파장변화를정밀하게빠른속도로복조할수있음을확인하였다. Ⅱ. 본론. 더블패스마하젠더간섭계구조및원리 그림 은더블패스 MZI의개략적인구조를보인다. 파장이변조된광섬유레이저의출력은 MZI를거쳐서 PD에서검출된다. 고정된파장 의광원은 MZI를 통과한후기준 FBG에서반사되고 MZI를다시한번거쳐서 PD에서검출된다. PD과 PD의신호를다음식 (), () 와같이표현할수있다. () 위식에서, 과 는간섭신호의직류성분이고, A 와 B는입력광의광세기와손실에비례하는크기이다. 는 MZI 의한쪽팔에위상변조기를두어광경로를변 조한주파수이고, 와 은광경로차에따른입력파장의위상성분이며, 는환경적외란에의한위상변화량이다. 입력광의파장변화가크지않은경우에간섭계출력의위상변화량 는다음식과같이근사할수있다. (3) ( : 광섬유코어의굴절률, : 간섭계의광경로차이, : 입력광원의초기파장, : 광원의파장변조량 ) 식 () 에서 를추출하기위해서본논문에서는더블패스 MZI에서생성되는내부트리거를이용하여 Quadrature 샘플링기법을사용하였다 [8]. 먼저입사광원의초기파장을 으로근사할수있다면, 식 () 의 PD 출력의교류성분은코사인함수이므로연속하는영점에서의주기는항상, π위상차를만족하며다음과같은식으로표현된다. (4) 이때, 영점주기를신호취득내부트리거로사용하면, PD의간섭신호에서 90도위상차를가지는 개의샘플데이터를얻을수있다. 샘플링된 개의데이터를서로나누고, 탄젠트 (tangent) 의역함수를가하면, 제한된구간 (± π/) 안에서위상이복원된다. 한정된구간에서반복되는위상을이어주기위해위상풀기 (phase unwrapping) 알고리즘을적용하면코사인함수의위상변화량을얻을수있으며식 (3) 을이용하여정확한파장복조량을계산할수있다. [5] 그림 에서 (a) 는 5 Hz 램프파형 (5 V) 을한쪽팔의광섬유가감긴원통형 PZT에인가하여 PD에서얻은 MZI의간섭신호이다. (b) 는기준 FBG에서반사되어 배의광경로차를경험하고 PD에서검출된광신호를 ac커플링하였다. ac커플링된 PD 간섭신호의영점에서 PD의샘플링트리거신호가생성된다. (44)

Interference signals according to the ramp voltage signal (a: PD signal, b: ac-coupled PD signal, c: voltage on phase modulator).. 파장가변필터 광섬유레이저의파장가변을위하여 Micron Optics 사의 FFP-SI (fiber Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer) 를이용하였으며, 그제원을표 에나타내었다. 그림 3은전원공급장치를파장가변필터에연결하고, 0~ V까지 V단위로승압하면서파장가변필터의투과파장변화를광파장분석기로측정한결과이다. V의입력전압범위에서 67. nm의파장변화를얻었으며, 평균파장변화율은 5.6 nm/v였다. FBG에가해지는물리량에따른파장변화량을정확히측정하기위해서는광섬유레이저의선형적인파장변조가요구된다. 그림 3과같이파장스캔특성이비선형적이라면, FBG 표. FFP-SI 제원 (@550 nm) Table. The nonlinear characteristic of a tunable filter. 센서의정확한파장변화량을얻을수없다. 이를보상하기위해서다수의기준파장을가진필터를이용하여파장필터의비선형성을보상하는방법이제안되었는데 [9], 본논문에서는앞절에서소개한더블패스 MZI 구조를이용하여 [8], 파장가변필터의비선형특성에관계없이빠르고정확한파장복조방법을제시한다. Ⅲ. 실험그림 4는더블패스 MZI를이용하여광섬유레이저의파장변화를복조하기위한시스템의개략도이다. 광섬유레이저의파장가변을위해함수발생기를이용하여 FP 파장필터를구동하였다. 파장가변레이저 (tunable laser) 는기준 FBG 파장검출을위해광원의파장을기 Tunable laser 50:50 50:50 PC 50:50 ISO 90:0 FP Ref. 4 46 더블패스마하젠더간섭계를이용한광섬유레이저의파장검출박형준외 준 FBG의중심파장 (530 nm) 에고정하였다. 실험의편의를위하여파장가변레이저를기준광원으로사용하였으나, 시스템구현시상대적으로가격이저렴한분산궤환형레이저다이오드 (distributed feedback laser dioide, DFB) 와같이파장이고정된광원을사용하는것도무방하다. 광섬유레이저와파장이고정된레이저의출력은 50:50 분리비를가지는광섬유커플러에서결합된뒤, 광섬유 MZI로입사한다. 위상변조기로사용하는원통형 PZT에감겨진광섬유는함수발생기의구동신호에따라 MZI의광경로차를발생하여간섭을일으킨다. 파장이고정된레이저의광원은온도보상패키징된 FBG ( 온도민감도 : 0.7 pm/ ) 에서반사되어다시, MZI를통과면서두배의위상변조를겪은후 PD에서검출된다. 또한, 파장가변필터의변조주파수로파장변조된광섬유레이저의출력은 MZI를통과후 PD에서검출된다. 각각의 PD에서검출한간섭신호는전기신호로변환되고, 저대역통과필터를거친뒤, 데이터수집장치를통해컴퓨터로읽어들인다. PD에서검출된더블패스 MZI의간섭신호로부터생성된내부트리거를이용하여, PD의간섭신호를 Quadrature 샘플링하였다. LabVIEW 프로그램을이용하여 90도위상차를가지는 개의데이터를서로나누고, 아크탄젠트함수를가한후, 위상풀기알고리즘을적용하여, 변조된광섬유레이저의파장변화를복조하였다. 제안한시스템 PD쪽의광출력을광섬유격자어레이의광원으로적용하면, 쉽게파장변화량을읽을수있는센서네트웍구 Sampled sine data [V] Sampled cosine data [V] 그림 5. 내부트리거를이용하여얻은샘플의 Lissajous 그래프 Fig. 5. Lissajous plot of the data sampled with internal triggers. 축이가능하다. 파장변조된광섬유레이저의광원을간섭계에입사하면, 더블패스 MZI 구조에서생성되는내부트리거신호에따라 PD 간섭신호에서 90 위상차를가지는 개의데이터를연속으로얻을수있다. 취득한데이터의조합으로 Lissajous 그래프를그림 5와같이생성하였고, 데이터사이 90 위상차오차분석을위해원형모델로 least square fitting을하였다. Lissajous 그래프를 fitting한결과는다음과같다. MSE (meas squared error) 는 였고, 평균위상오차는.5 mrad였으며, 90 위상차를기준으로해서약 0.5 % 의오차를보였다. 그림 6은함수발생기를이용하여 Hz (6 V p-p, DC offset: 6 V) 의램프신호로파장가변필터를변조한뒤, 광섬유레이저의파장변화를제안한파장복조방법으로측정한결과이다. 선형적인램프구동신호에따라 54.6~586.5 nm까지본논문에서구성한광섬유레이저의비선형동작특성을확인할수있다. 선행연구에서는저속의램프파형 ( Hz) 을이용하여, 파장스캔을하였으나 [0], 고속파장변조시에는비연속구간에서발생하는과도적인진동파형이커지는문제가발생하여신호처리에어려움을겪었다. 고속파장스캔이요구되는광섬유레이저의파장변조기초실험을위하여파장가변필터에 0 Hz ( V p-p ) 의사인과삼각파형으로순차적으로구동하였고, 더블패스간섭구조를이용하여그림 7과같이파장을복조하였다. 내부트리거생성을위한더블패스 MZI의위상변조기는 KHz (9 V p-p) 의삼각파형으로구동하였으며, nm 범위의 Wavelength [nm] Wavelength demodulation F-P filter driving signal Time [sec] Amplitude [V] 그림 6. 램프변조신호에따른파장복조 Fig. 6. Demodulation of wavelength variations when a sine and a triangular wave are applied to a tunable filter. 광섬유레이저의파장변화와약 35 pm의파장측정정밀도를얻었다. 실험결과로부터파장필터의비선형특성에상관없이, 구동신호에따라변조된광섬유레이저의파장이충실히복조되었음을그림 6과 7로부터확인할수있었다. Ⅳ. 결론 본논문에서는더블패스 MZI 구조를이용하여파장가변광섬유레이저의파장복조기법을제안하였다. 제안한파장복조시스템으로 FP파장필터의비선형동작특성에관계없이광섬유레이저의파장변화를정확하게읽어낼수있음을확인하였다. 다양한변조파형을파장가변필터에적용한결과, 0 Hz( V p-p ) 의파장변조에서 35 pm의파장측정정밀도를얻었다. 내부트리거를이용하여취득한데이터를조합하여구성한 Lissajous 그래프의원형피팅을통해.5 mrad의위상측정오차를구하였다. 제안된파장복조방법은대형전기설비나원자력발전소, 대형교량, 댐과같은복합구조물을위한상시감시용광섬유격자어레이의파장복조시스템에효과적으로적용할수있을것으로예상된다.
