Welcome to the Orchestra! 교향악단 모두를 대표하여 다채롭고 흥미로운 년 시즌에 오신 것을 환영합니다. 우선 저와 교향악단이 새로운 해를 시작할 수 있도록 물심양면으로 도와주신 여러분 모두에게 깊은 감사의 말씀을 전합니다. 지난 2014년은 단원들과 서로 눈빛만으로도 소통할 수 있는 신뢰와 믿음을 가지게 되었고 그들과 함께 교향악단을 아끼고 사랑해 주시는 청중들을 위해 최상 그리고 최고의 연주를 들려드리고자 최선을 노력을 하였던 놀랍고도 성공적인 시간들이었습니다. 교향악단 음악감독으로서 저의 도전은 년에도 계속 이어집니다. 새로운 도전과 가능성을 보여드리는 해로 그 책임과 역할의 무게를 느끼는 순간이지만, 연주회를 찾아주시는 여러분의 마음을 움직일 특별한 하모니를 만들어 낼 예정입니다. 특히 올해는 전세계 비르투오조들과 뛰어난 재능을 가진 영 아티스트들과 함께 빚어낼 흥미로운 연주회로 가득 채울 것입니다. 저와 교향악단은 년 새해에도 청중들과 더욱더 음악으로 소통할 수 있기를 바라며 연주회에서 만나뵙기를 고대합니다. On behalf of the entire SO family I would like to welcome all of you to our exciting season. I also would like to express our infinite gratitude to everyone who has helped and supported the Orchestra and myself as we embark on a new beginning this year. The year 2014 has been a marvelously successful one for all of us. The orchestra members and I have developed a deep connection and trust in each other, and together, we have committed and dedicated ourselves to deliver performances of the highest musical caliber. The new season presents me with a new set of challenges and responsibilities as Music Director of the Orchestra. I am looking forward to developing our orchestra into a truly special ensemble that moves and touches audiences hearts. The new season will be filled with exciting concerts that our internationally renowned guest artists, inspiring young talents, and the Orchestra will create together. The Orchestra and I look forward to connecting with our audiences through musical masterpieces over the next season. Last year, the Orchestra faced its second year as a foundation and worked diligently to fulfill its role as a musical leader in Korea, as it has always done in its nearly fivedecade long history. Throughout its history, the Orchestra has touched and consoled the hearts of many with its subscription concerts, outreach concerts, local concerts, and concerts for young people. Encourage and inspire through music will never cease to be the Orchestra s goal. The Orchestra will continue to carry out its mission as a cultural ambassador of Korea in the new season. The year is especially meaningful, as the Orchestra presents its 700th subscription concert. Maestro Yoel Levi Yoel Levi is known throughout the world from his work at the head of many of the world s most prestigious orchestras, his repertoire of symphonic, operatic and lyric works and his extensive discography. Having won first prize at the International Conductors Competition in Besançon in 1978, he spent six years as the assistant of Lorin Maazel and resident conductor at the Cleveland Orchestra and went on to be Music Director of the Atlanta Orchestra from 1988 to It was during his tenure with the orchestra that the British magazine Gramophone applauded his impact on the artistic standard of the orchestra: Yoel Levi has built a reputation for himself and for his orchestra that is increasingly the envy of the big five American counterparts in New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Boston and Chicago. This sentiment was seconded with the nomination of the Atlanta Orchestra as "Best orchestra of the Year" for 1991/92 at the First Annual International Classical Music Awards. Similarly, Yoel Levi has held positions with several European orchestras, where he has consistently raised performances to new and critically acclaimed levels. Having been Principal Conductor of the Brussels Philharmonic (2001 to 2007) Yoel Levi was appointed Principal Conductor of the Orchestre National d'ile de France in 2005, a post he held until 2012, giving regular concerts in Paris, the Ile de France area and increasingly taking the orchestra on tour outside France to Spain, Eastern Europe and London, where the media praised the orchestra as being one of the most inspiring and frequently engaged orchestras in Europe. He was appointed music director of the (Korean Broadcasting System) Orchestra and also take up the position of principal conductor. His twoyear term began in January Yoel Levi's engagements as guest conductor take him all over the world to conduct orchestras in London, Paris, Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Rome, Frankfurt, Munich, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Israel, Korea and Japan. In North America, he has conducted the New York Philharmonic and the orchestras of Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Washington, Minnesota, Toronto and Montreal amongst others. He is also the first Israeli to serve as Principal Guest Conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra with which he has given tours of the United States and Mexico as well as a special concert celebrating the 60th Anniversary of State of Israel. Other recent tours include an extensive tour of New Zealand with the New Zealand Orchestra and highly acclaimed concerts in Spain with the Orchestre de Paris. Yoel Levi is frequently invited to conduct at special events such as the Nobel Prize Ceremony at the head of the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Ever since his 1997 debut in the orchestra pit at the Teatro Communale in Florence conducting La Fanciulla del West, Yoel Levi has devoted a large part of his activities to the Opera repertoire conducting Carmen at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Makropulos Case by Janacek in Prague, Puccini's Edgar with the Orchestre National de France. At the ASO, he conducted Mozart's The Magic Flute, The abduction of the Seraglio, and Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. With the Brussels Philharmonic, Yoel Levi performed Puccini's Tosca, La Traviata and Madame Butterfly and recent performances have included Tosca during the Puccini festival in Torre de Lago, Italy. In France he has conducted Poulenc s Dialogues des carmélites, Nabucco at the Stade de France for 60,000 people, with live television broadcast in Europe. Others performances have included Aida, Elixir of Love, Hansel and Gretel and La Boheme, amongst others. In 1997 Yoel Levi was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts Degree by Oglethorpe University in Atlanta and also gave the commencement address. In June 2001 he was named Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government. Born in Romania, Yoel Levi grew up in Israel where he studied at the Tel Aviv Academy of Music, where he received a Master of Arts degree with distinction, and The Jerusalem Academy of Music under Mendi Rodan. Sung Kwak, one of Korea s leading conductors, began performing the trumpet at the age of sixteen, joining the Orchestra, the Yegreen Troupe, and the Seoul Orchestra. After graduating from the Mannes College of Music with honors, Maestro Kwak debuted as the conductor of the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra in New York. Since then, he stood on numerous podiums in the United States, including New York City Center s Joffrey Ballet ( ), New York s Eglevsky Ballet ( ), the Atlanta Orchestra as Assistant Conductor ( ), the Cleveland Orchestra as Assistant Conductor ( ), the Austin Orchestra as Music Director ( ), the Sunriver(Oregon) Music Festival as Artistic Director ( ). In Korea, he has served as Music Director of the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra ( ), Music Director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra ( ), and chief and guest conductor of the Orchestra ( ), and as Music Director and Chief Conductor at the Daegu Philharmonic Orchestra since Maestro Kwak has appeared as a guest conductor with numerous American orchestras, including the orchestras of San Antonio, Alabama, Nashville, Knoxville, Oakland, Houston, Fort Worth, Washington National, Dallas, Jacksonville, Colorado, El Paso, Long Island, Delaware, Seattle, Hudson Valley, Oregon, St. Louis, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans, and Buffalo. He has also been invited to conduct leading orchestras around the world, such as the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Philharmonic Orchestra, Georgia State Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon of Spain, Rheinische Philharmonie of Germany, Innsbruck Orchestra of Austria, National University Philharmonic of Mexico (OFUNAM), Vancouver Orchestra of Canada, Kyushu Orchestra of Japan, National Orchestra of Taiwan, National Orchestra of Korea, Korea National Opera, Seoul Philharmonic, and State Orchestra of the Democratic People s Republic of Korea. Maestro Kwak has also been invited to conduct at special occasions. He conducted at the opening ceremonial concert of the Sejong Art Center (1978), Opening Ceremony of the Main Olympic Stadium in Seoul, Korea (1987), in a special PanKorean Unification Concert in Pyungyang, North Korea (1990). In 1995, he conducted performances in Paris with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra (Venezuela) for the celebration of UNESCO's fiftieth anniversary. In the following year, he conducted in a special commemorative concert to celebrate the participation of both North and South Korea in the Atlanta Olympic. In 2000, he conducted the united orchestra of South and North Korea in a memorable concert.. Maestro Kwak has led the Orchestra in multiple occasions in the past, most notably in several international tours: in 1986, he too the ensemble on a fivecity tour of Japan; in 1984, on a fivecountry tour of Southeast Asia; and in 1978, on a 23city tour of the United States. With the Busan Philharmonic, he toured four cities in the United States in 1997; three Southeast Asian countries in 2000; and three Chinese cities in In addition to his active conducting career, Maestro Kwak has dedicated himself in the training of young musicians. He has taught at the Music School of the University of Texas in Austin, Mannes College of Music in New York, and the Queens College of New York. Currently he is a professor at the Keimyung University, while also serving as Director of the Conducting Master Course for Professional Conductors in Caracas, Venezuela. Maestro Kwak is known for his rigorous discipline, dedication, and scholarly approach to music, which are evident in his solid and balanced performances. He has been appointed as the Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra in With his undying passion to inspire through music, Maestro Kwak is an important addition to the Orchestra. 4 Orchestra 5

4 사 장 박인건 음악감독 겸 상임지휘자 수석 객원지휘자 요엘 레비 곽 승 SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (재)교향악단 단 원 악장 부악장 전용우 최병호 교향악단은 1956년 창단되어 수준 높은 연주를 통하여 대한민국의 클래식 음악을 대표하는 교향악단으로 성장하였다. 임원식 초대 상임지휘자 이후 홍연택, 원경수, 오트마 마가, 정명훈, 드미트리 키타옌코 등 세계 정상의 지휘자들이 상임지휘를 맡으며 국내 정상의 오케스트라로 자리매김하였고 2012년 9월, 교향악단은 전문예술경영체제를 갖춘 재단법인으로 새롭게 출범해 명실상부 대한민국을 대표하는 세계적인 오케스트라로 도약할 수 있는 발판을 마련하였다. Founded in 1956, the Orchestra has been a leader in Korea s musical life. Ever since its inaugural season with Maestro Wonshik Ihm, the Orchestra has continued to grow under the leadership of great musical minds such as Yeontaek Hong, Kyungsu Won, Othmar Mága, Myungwhun Chung, and Dmitri Kitayenko, In September 2012, the Orchestra became a foundation. Now equipped with a committee of experts in the field of arts administration, the Orchestra is ready to take a new step and transform its tradition of artistic excellence into even greater achievements. The Orchestra plays about 90 concerts a year: in addition to the main subscription concerts that are offered more than 20 times every year, Young People s Concerts, KLover outreach concerts, and various specialthemed and corporate concerts fill its calendar. The roster of artists who have performed with the Orchestra includes preeminent musical personalities such as KunWoo Paik, Sumi Jo, Sarah Chang, Hanna Chang, Myungwha Chung, Mischa Maisky, Peter Jablonski, and Los Romeros. The Orchestra has performed extensively abroad. Some of its performances overseas include: a tour of the major cities in the United States in 1979; the fivecountry tour in Southeast Asia; the sixcity Japan tour; the fourcity tour in Japan on NHK s invitation; and the Kitakyushu International Music Festival in Japan. In October 2010, it toured in the United States once again to celebrate the 65th Anniversary of the United Nations. The Orchestra has also collaborated with ensembles outside the country, fulfilling its role as a cultural ambassador. These concerts include: a joint performance with the Hiroshima Philharmonic Orchestra in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations and the 50th Anniversary of Liberation of Korea at the United Nations General Assembly Hall; and exchange concerts with the China Philharmonic Orchestra in Seoul, Beijing, and Shanghai in In addition, in August 2000 and September 2002, the Orchestra performed with the State Orchestra of the Democratic People s Republic of Korea in a historical joint concert in Seoul and in Pyeongyang. Most recently, the special coperformance with the China National Orchestra was held in July The Orchestra has played a leading role in the cultural life of Korea with its thoughtful programming, which reflects upon cultural and political issues at home and abroad. These programs include Wagner s 200th Anniversary Concert, a special concert to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War, the great Arirang concert in celebration of the folk melody s listing on UNESCO s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. To be played are Beethoven symphonies and Brahms symphonies, which are characterized by thorough development of subjects and solid musical structures. Symphonies by Schumann and Dvořák are infused with romance and lyricism. Also played are a tone poem by Richard Strauss and Berlioz s Symphonie fantastique, full of imaginative programs and storytelling. The concert opens with Musica Celestis by Aaron Jay Kernis, one of the most prolific composers of our time. Like its title, Musical Celestis is an ethereal work, enveloping our ear and senses with gentle texture created by the tender wash of the strings. The first virtuoso artist of the season is the pianist Nokolai Demidenko. Acclaimed for his recorded albums of BachBusoni, Chopin, and Medtner, Demidenko is an artist Korean audiences have long been waiting to meet. He is known for introducing less familiar works by familiar composers or new works by lesserknown composers. In this program, he plays Prokofiev s Piano Concerto No. 5, in which percussive use of the piano, classical construction, lyricism of the slow movement, all blend. Guest conductor Andreas Delfs leads the podium in Dvořák s No. 6. Beethoven s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Strauss s Symphonic Poem Ein Heldenleben (A Hero s Life) both speak of heroes. Beethoven s Concerto is marked by orchestration that challenges the capabilities of the instruments at the time, as well as a full sound that separates it from piano concertos written previously. Moreover, it is Beethoven s only concerto that begins in a minor key; however, it heroically finds its way to a C major key in the last movement. Beethoven was losing his hearing around the time of composing this concerto, and it indeed reflects the hero who possesses an undying will to compose nevertheless. Richard Struass s allegedly autobiographical tone poem, Ein Heldenleben, tells the story of a hero, his triumphs over enemies at the battlefield, achievements of peace and intelligence, and retirement. As Koh enters her twenties, classical music lovers are privileged to watch the child prodigy grow into a mature musician. Brahms s German Requiem, of which texts were collected by the composer himself from the Lutheran Bible, is a sacred work to be sung in a concert setting rather than a liturgical Mass. Revealing Brahms s humanly and religious contemplations, the work is comprised of seven parts that reflect upon the vanity of human life, mortality, grief of men who lost loved ones and consolations for them, eternal rest, and hope for reunification through resurrection. Oberon, the king of the fairies in Shakespeare s comedy play A Midsummer Night s Dream, dwells in the forest and performs magic in order to solve various problems in the human world. This concert of an August midsummer s night is a celebration of romantic music. The concert presents Carl Maria von Weber s Overture to his own opera Oberon, Schumann s Piano Concerto in a minor, and Sibelius s No. 1. Schumann s Piano Concerto is marked by intimate conversations between the solo piano and the orchestra, splendid melodies, and overflowing lyricismoverall, a realization of Schumann s musical ideals. The pianist Haochen Zhang, who won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at the age of nineteen, is the soloist. Sibelius s No. 1, written with the composer s reminiscence of the grand glacier and dense forests of his homeland, is replete with nostalgia for Finnish folk music and influences from the late German Romanticism. This program is a celebration of the cello, an instrument that resembles autumn. The night opens with a work by Zoltán Kodály, the father of Hungarian folk music. Kodály spent his youth in the Hungarian town of Galánta, and with folk tunes he collected in this area, created the Danses de Galánta, a work marked by rapidly changing tempo, exotic melodies, and lively rhythm. Prokofiev loved the cello, and, with the help of the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, completed Sinfonia Concertante, in which the composer explores the possibilities of the instrument and creates taut tension between seemingly contradictory elements, as well as between the orchestra and the soloist. Performances of the cello virtuoso Alban Gerhardt have been praised with such phrase as: The cello starts to sing under his hands, standard works are newly discovered and unknown pieces are brought to life again. Gerhardt s performance with the Orchestra will allow you to rediscover the beauty of the cello. Schumann s No. 4 was written in 1841, the second year of his marriage to the beloved wife Clara. With this meaningful concert, the Orchestra remembers its six decadelong history, shared and supported by the classic music lovers in Korea since its establishment in In 2014, the Orchestra performed Mahler s No. 1 as Maestro Yoel Levi s inaugural concert. In the 700th subscription concert, the Orchestra has chosen to play Mahler s Second, which is dubbed Resurrection. No. 2 is in a way an answer to Mahler s own deliberation on life and death, as well as the world beyond the human realm. The work is also an important turning point in Mahler s compositional career: it took six years to complete, contains five lengthy movements, lasts an hour and a half in a concert, boasts massive orchestration, experiments with special sound effects involving offstage brass parts, and develops with tightly linked musical subjects it is a truly glorious work. The text from the fifth movement proclaims: That for which you suffered / To God will it lead you! (Was du geschlagen / Zu Gott wird es dich tragen!).
